Assalammualaikum w.b.t and hi everybody! I hope each of you will have a good day. I am
Alyaa Waheedah binti Herzulzaid. I stand before you today as to catch your attention all,
on the topic of 'TEENAGE DEPRESSION: WHO GETS THE BLAME?"
First of all, the definition of Depression is a common and serious medical illness that
negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Depression causes
feelings of sadness or a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. Depression also can
affect your daily life. For example, you may have trouble sleeping, losing appetite, fatigue
everyday and the most dangerous is recurrent thoughts of death or suicide. In fact, suicidal
cases are quite common in Malaysia, the number of reported suicidal cases among
teenagers have been increasing over the years and sadly, the age of who attempt suicide is
getting younger too. At the same time, do you ever wonder that there are teenagers whose
struggling with depression?
Statistics show that there are 42% or 424,000 adolescents suffering from depression in
Malaysia. Recently, there are news that 'Depressed student allegedly commits suicide
because of academic pressure'. Unfortunately, that victim of commit suicide the one who
gets the blame. This is unfair right? We cannot blame them a 100 percent. The student was
suffered from depression because of academic pressure. Most likely she was lonely so she
tried to hold back all the feelings of being alone. As a result of bearing heavy problems, she
chose to commit suicide because of a great criticism from those around her. Furthermore,
the occurrence of mental health issues among students are caused by many factors,
including peer pressure, harsh parenting styles, family conflicts and many other reasons.
Basically this is not the victim’s fault but the person who negatively impacted them by
changing the way the victim thinks and feels about themselves. However, there are several
reasons and causes why teenagers face depression either at school or at home
To begin with, the closest society of the teenagers is their family. Not all teenager most
likely to have a happy family. Some of them are choosing to run away from home just to
escape a problematic family. This is due to unhealthy environment provided by their
family. For example, parents always think that if their kids are having a mental illness, they
be thought oh! they're child being an attention seeker. So, parents should have done deep
talking about it face to face with their child. They need love, probably seeking help and not
a criticism especially from their own flesh and blood. Also, parents should know when and
how to express their thought because children are just like glass, they are very fragile.
Next, having an early childhood trauma such as, being tortured physically or
emotionally, or loss of a parent, may cause changes in the brain that increase the risk of
depression. For instance, expressing hopelessness for the future, giving up on one's self
and talking as if no one else cares. Their trauma can affect their intellect about thinking
all people are bad people just like their abuser until being an adult. Although, we can
help them by listening to their problems, support them until they can live like a normal
teenager, and plays with them just like in childhood's day to replace the worse
childhood trauma.
Besides that, school pressure. Many teens experience some degree academic pressure.
They are worried if they can't achieve the expectations and started to blame themselves.
Thus, poor school performance and frequent absences from school happen.
Consequently, the students can be stressful and might having a mental breakdown.
They are needing a deep rest from all of that, not too fast but maybe taking 3 month to
recover back. Then, bullying. Bullying is directly correlated with adolescent depression
in school. Victims of bullying in school are scared to tell anybody about what happened
to them. The cause is the bullies mock them by mental and physical such as, hitting
victim's property. Hence, the victims are traumatized and can develop a depression also
may thinking to commit suicide.
From this point, we need people awareness to look into this matter seriously. If we are
concern about this case, a lot of teenagers will be happy and they will learn anything
what they desire without any limitations.
Last but not least, i have to end my speech here. It's been an honor to be among such
accomplished individuals and to be able to present my perspective. Thank you and have
a good day.
