Low Resistance Grounding System DATE JAN 1999
ENGINEERING STANDARD PAGE 3 OF 6
1. Scope
This standard covers the minimum requirements for a grounding resistor assembly to be used in a 2.4 to 15 kV low
resistance grounding system with neutral available.
2. References
Reference is made in this standard to the following documents. The latest issues, amendments, and supplements to
these document shall apply unless otherwise indicated.
Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE)
IEEE 32 Standard Requirements, Terminology, and Test Procedure for Neutral Grounding Devices
3. Design
3.1 Service Conditions
3.1.1 Equipment shall be designed for the following ambient conditions unless otherwise specified on the Data Sheet,
Appendix A.
(i) 10 - 100% Relative Humidity
(ii) Sea Level
(iii) Outdoor, nonclassified location
(iv) Units installed outdoor shall be rated for continuous operation at 5 - 50°C in coastal areas and very fine dust
conditions.
3.2 Construction
3.2.1 Resistor units shall be made of stainless steel, edgewound around a ceramic core and individually supported at
each end by porcelain or cycloaliphatic epoxy insulators.
3.2.2 Connections between elements shall be welded.
3.2.3 Resistors shall be rated to carry current as specified on Data Sheet for ten seconds with a maximum
temperature rise of 760°C.
3.2.4 Unless otherwise indicated on the Data Sheet, each assembly shall include an outdoor type, relaying accuracy
current transformer between the source and the resistor. The transformer shall have a primary rating of one half the
resistor current rating and a 5 amp secondary.
3.2.5 Resistor and neutral current transformer, when indicated on Data Sheet, Appendix A, shall be mounted inside a
ventilated metal safety enclosure. The enclosure shall be designed to prevent the entry of rodents. Enclosure frame
mounting details shall be as specified on Data Sheets, Appendix A.
3.2.6 Cable connections shall use two hole (14.29 mm diameter, 45 mm center to center) long barrel compression
connectors. The number and sizes shall be as shown on the Data Sheet, Appendix A.
3.2.7 Current transformer secondary shall be wired to a shorting terminal block using ring type lugs. The terminal block
shall be installed in a separate NEMA 4X junction box mounted on the exterior of the enclosure. Current transformer
secondary wiring shall be of number 6 mm2 minimum.
3.2.8 Resistor support frame, enclosure frame and enclosure screen shall be made of stainless steel unless otherwise
indicated on the Data Sheet, Appendix A. All bolts, nuts and other hardware items shall be made of 300 series
stainless steel. Resistor frame shall be supported by porcelain or cycloaliphatic post type insulators.
3.2.9 The enclosure shall be provided with one solderless connector sized for 70 mm2 copper cable for enclosure
grounding.
3.2.10 Provisions for lifting the entire assembly shall be included.
3.2.11 The cable between the source and the resistor will be provided by SABIC. Adequate space shall be provided
inside the enclosure for bending and termination of the cable, and the termination of Resistance to Ground Terminals.

4. Nameplate
4.1 Front of the enclosure shall have a nameplate fabricated from 2 ply white and black laminated plastic providing the
following description. The letters shall be engraved, 5 mm high in upper case, printed permanently in black on white
background.
(i) Input voltage
(ii) Rated current
(iii) Frequency
(iv) Resistor type
(v) Ohms value of the resistor
(vi) Time settings in seconds
(vii) Temperature rises in centigrade
(viii) Equipment tag
4.2 The name plate shall be beveled at 45°, 1.5 mm all around.
4.3 The nameplate shall have a 2.8 mm (7/64 in) diameter hole on each end, 5 mm from the edge.
4.4 The nameplate shall be fastened with 4 5/16 inch long stainless steel screws. Glued or press-on type fastening
shall not be acceptable.
5. Testing
Standard tests (overpotential and ohmic measurement) shall be in accordance with IEEE 32. Certified copies of the
test results shall be provided to SABIC.
6. Conflicts
Any conflict(s) between this standard and other standards, engineering drawings and contract documents shall be
identified to SABIC. When resolving conflicts, the following order of precedence shall apply:
(i) One-Line Diagram(s) and Associated Drawings
(ii) Data Sheet
