Chapter 8
Overview
• We have previously solved for
definite & indefinite integrals
with functions that have
antiderivatives, or used the
substitution method with the
basic equations summarized in
Table 8.1.
• However, some functions or
combination of functions
need different techniques to
solve for the integral. These
methods will be introduced in
this chapter.
Integration by Parts
With a proper choice of u & v, the second integral is easier to evaluate than the first.

Integration by Parts
The general idea is to use identities to transform the integrals we need to find, into
integrals that are easier to work with.
• Products of Powers of Sines and Cosines
Trigonometric Integrals
• Method of Partial Fractions: ƒ(x)/g(x) = Proper fraction = degree of ƒ(x) < degree
of g(x). If not, then divide ƒ(x) by g(x) and work with the remainder term.

• You might think this region has infinite area, but we will see that the value is finite.
• In each case, if the limit is finite then the improper integral converges and the limit is the value
of the improper integral. If limit fails to exist, the improper integral diverges (area is infinite).
