LAB REPORT 4

Objective:
To practice the Trim, Extend, Mirror, Offset, Erase, Sketch Plane and Extruded cut
commands and to practice a basic 3D drawing (Practice Drawing-2)

Apparatus:
In order to complete the demonstration, we need a equipment.

• Solidworks Software
• Compatible Microsoft Windows
• Mouse or other pointing device

SolidWorks Fundamentals
SolidWorks is a powerful and widely used 3D modeling software that allows users to
create complex models and assemblies. The software offers a comprehensive set of tools and
features for various applications, including product design, engineering analysis, and
manufacturing

Objectives:
1. Practice the Trim, Extend, Mirror, Offset, Erase, Sketch Plane, and Extruded Cut
commands.

2. Create a basic 3D drawing.

Procedure:
Part 1: Practice of Basic Commands

1. Sketch Plane:

Adding 3D Sketch Planes:

Click Plane (Sketch toolbar) or Tools > Sketch Entities > Plane to display the Sketch
Plane PropertyManager.
From the FeatureManager design tree, select a plane, and click 3D Sketch on Plane (Sketch
toolbar) or Insert > 3D Sketch on Plane.

➢ Created a new sketch plane as shown in Figure 1.

➢ Observed the default plane orientation and grid settings.

➢ Learned how to change the plane orientation and adjust grid spacing if necessary.

2. Rectangle:

Menu. Click Tools > Sketch Entities to select rectangle tools. Rectangle
Property Manager. Change to different rectangle tools from the Rectangle Property
Manager.

➢ Drew a rectangle on the sketch plane as shown in Figure 2.

➢ Learned how to specify precise dimensions for the rectangle.

➢ Practiced using the selection tools to manipulate the rectangle's position and size.

3. Trim:

To trim with the Power Trim option in SOLIDWORKS, We can:

1. Right-click the sketch and select Edit Sketch

2. Select Tools > Sketch Tools > Trim
3. Click in the graphics area next to the first entity
4. Drag across the sketch entity to trim

We can also trim a surface by:

1. Selecting a surface, sketch entity, curve, or plane in the graphics area

2. Selecting a trim action
3. Choosing which pieces you want to keep or remove

There are two choices for surface trim: standard trim and mutual trim. Standard trim uses
one surface to cut the other as a tool. Mutual trim lets you select both surfaces as trimming
surfaces

3|Page

• Function: Within SolidWorks, the Trim tool removes unwanted portions of sketch
entities where they intersect.
• Significance: It ensures precise sketches by eliminating excess segments, enabling clean
and accurate designs.
• Usage: The Trim command refines sketches before extruding or revolving them into 3D
shapes, enhancing model accuracy.

4. Extend:

In SolidWorks, there are multiple ways to extend:

• Extend Entities: Increases the length of a sketch entity, such as a line, centerline, or
arc. This can be used to expand a sketch entity to meet another sketch entity. To extend a
sketch entity, you can:

1. Select Extend Entities on the Sketch toolbar

2. Select Tools > Sketch Tools > Extend

3. Move the pointer over the sketch entity to extend

• Extend Surface:

Extends an existing surface to interact with other surfaces or bodies. To extend a

surface, We can:

1. Select an edge, multiple edges, or a face

2. Select Extended Surface on the Surfaces toolbar

3. Select Insert > Surface > Extend

4|Page

• Function: Extends sketch entities to intersect with other edges or boundaries.

• Significance: Crucial for connecting sketch elements, maintaining design continuity.

• Usage: It's beneficial when aligning or joining entities, ensuring a seamless transition
between parts.

5. Mirror:

To mirror a feature in SOLIDWORKS, We can do the following:

1. In a part, click Mirror in the Features toolbar

2. In an assembly, click Assembly Features in the Assembly tab on the CommandManager,

then click Mirror

3. Click Insert, then Pattern/Mirror, then Mirror

4. Click Insert, then Assembly Feature, then Mirror

We can also use the Mirror Part tool to create a mirrored derived part. To do this,
you can:

1. In an open part or document, click a model face or plane to use as the reference

2. Click Insert, then Mirror Part

5|Page

We can also mirror drawing views in SOLIDWORKS. To do this, you can:

1. In a drawing, select a model, relative to model, or predefined drawing view

2. In the PropertyManager, under Orientation, select Mirror view

3. Under Mirror view, select Horizontal or Vertical

• Function: In SolidWorks, the Mirror tool duplicates selected sketch entities, features, or
bodies across a defined axis.
• Significance: Allows for efficient symmetrical modeling, reducing repetitive tasks and
ensuring design uniformity.
• Usage: Essential for creating symmetrical parts or features, saving time and ensuring
accuracy.

6. Offset:

To create offset surfaces in Solidworks, We can:

1. Select Offset Surface from the Surfaces toolbar.

2. Select Insert then Surface then Offset.

3. Select surfaces or faces in the graphics area.

6|Page

4. Set a value for Offset Distance.

5. Click OK.

We can also offset text in Solidworks by:

1. Selecting the surface you want to offset from.

2. Clicking the Offset from surface option.

3. Entering the amount of extrusion above the surface.

The offset entities tool in Solidworks can create an offset of: Sketch entities, Model
edges, Model faces.

➢ Created parallel copies of the rectangle at specified offset distances as shown in

Figure 6.

➢ Used the Offset command to define the thickness of the object walls.

➢ Learned how to manipulate the offset direction and number of copies.

• Usage: Useful for generating offset profiles crucial for various features like extrusions,
cuts, or patterns

7. Erase:

7|Page
CAD and Machine Design MEEN211101046

The Erase command in SOLIDWORKS deletes the selected entities. To use the Erase
command, We can:

➢ Select the Modify menu

➢ Select Erase
➢ Press Enter to execute the command

• Function: Deletes selected sketch entities or features.

• Significance: Helps in cleaning up sketches, removing unnecessary or redundant
elements.
• Usage: Ensures optimized sketches and models, improving overall design clarity and
efficiency.

8. Extruded Cut:

To create an extruded cut in SolidWorks, We can do the following:

1. Open a sketch on a face or plane

2. Sketch a profile of the cut

8|Page
CAD and Machine Design MEEN211101046

3. Click Extruded Cut or Revolved Cut in the Features toolbar

4. Select Insert then Assembly Feature then Cut

5. Select Extrude or Revolve

6. Set the options in the Extrude or Revolve PropertyManager

• Function: Removes material by extruding a sketch in a specified direction, creating

voids or features.
• Significance: Enables the creation of cavities, holes, or intricate details in solid models.
• Usage: Crucial for adding complexity and functionality to designs by cutting into
existing 3D shapes within SolidWorks.

Conclusion:
Mastering these fundamental commands in SolidWorks is pivotal for efficient and
accurate 3D modeling. Their collective usage streamlines the design process, enabling users to
create intricate, precise, and symmetrical models. These commands serve as the building blocks

for transforming 2D sketches into detailed and functional 3D models, significantly enhancing the
designer's capabilities within the software.
By understanding the nuances and applications of these commands, designers can optimize their
workflow, ensuring cleaner designs, shorter development cycles, and increased productivity in
SolidWork.
