DPFSS IS A FEE-PAYING SCHOOL

2019 – 3rd Best Full Service School in South Africa
2023 – NOTHING FOR ME, WITHOUT ME
HARD WORK AND DETERMINATION ARE KEY WORDS TO SUCCESS.
Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Healthy
HEALTH MATTERa vs REGULAR SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
In terms of the Learner Attendance Policy, principals of schools must ensure and
encourage parents, guardians and caregivers to send their children to school until
the end of every term.
We have finished the Controlled Tests for this term, teaching and learning
continues, hence ALL learners must still attend school.
There are many learners and educators who fell sick and are not well and we are
mindful of that. We wish all a speedy recovery.
Well done to all the other learners who have been to school since day 1.
Many learners are sent to the office when they are unwell. Some parents,
guardians and caregivers do fetch BUT the majority are fetched after school. That
is not fair to your child. A learner also came to look for medication but
unfortunately we cannot administer any medication.
Please stay warm, healthy and safe.
Mr R.C. Peters
Principal

EARLY CLOSING – 15 JUNE – 11H00

School will be closing early next week Thursday 15 June 2023. Learners will be
dismissed at 11h00 since Friday is a public holiday, celebrating Youth Day.
PIRLS (PROGRESS IN INTERNATIONAL READING LITERACY STUDY)
I have mentioned and written about this, international assessment and research
project, testing in particular, the reading for understanding levels in Grade 4,
across the world in previous newsletters.
The School Management have attended training to assist in improving the learners
ability to read for understanding.

Various colleagues at school will be engaged and a programme will be designed in
conjunction with the DAAR (Drop All And Read) period to increase literacy levels
across the grades and curriculum.
We want to however ask parents, guardians and caregivers to also assist at home
and make sure that learners read, e.g.

 silently - to test if they’ve understood what they were reading;

 aloud - to assist with pronounciation, spelling and punctuation, to
mention
but a few ideas.
There are many learners who love reading and we have a library that is well
resourced with interesting books and reading material.
Margaret Fuller wrote, “Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.”

Remember also boys and girls, “A closed book will never open your mind.”

MAINTENANCE
We are busy with quite a bit of maintenance issues:
1. The installation of an invertor for the office to operate effectively.
2. Replacement of doors in certain areas.
3. Window repairs.
4. Repairs to the staircases at the hall in progress.
5. We’ve discovered another leak under the garage to be fixed, etc.

CHILD PROTECTION WEEK: 29 MAY – 02 JUNE

Our Social Worker, Miss Mooka, arranged for Social Development to address
certain topics with our learners re. their safety, etc.

We need to constantly and consistently remind our learners on stranger-danger,

when they walk home, not to loiter in and around school, parents to fetch learners
on time from the waiting area. We’ve mentioned an incident which happened 2
weeks ago and we need all your support for the safety of our learners.

SCHOOL FEES
We are in transition with our Finance system. Apologies. We envisage that the
new system will be up and running next week. In the event it is not, kindly
continue with regular monthly payments and again we apologise for any
inconvenience caused.

WORLD HUNGER DAY – FOOD DONATION DRIVE 2023

World Hunger Day is commemorated every year on the 29th of May. In the previous
year, Discovery Primary initiated a food donation drive in support of the World
Hunger Day and from it 65 families were fed. Thanks to all who made this possible.
We would like to continue with the same spirit of giving again this year. The food
donation drive is open, and we encourage learners and families to donate as much
as they can. Examples of items that can be donated:
• Non-perishable food items (Canned food; nuts and seeds; whole grains; nut
butters; tea; sugar; dried soups etc.)
• Toiletries (toothpaste; soap; toilet rolls; sanitary towels etc.)
• Washing/cleaning detergents
Learners can start handing in their donations from Monday 15th May until the
15th of June. These items will be donated to disadvantaged families within our
school community.
