MOTIVATION AND CHALLENGES
Global warming: disruption on natural balance

Importance of environmental sustainability

• Basic needs of all living creatures are limited
• natural resources: air, water, soil, minerals, etc
• ecological balance: the living things and
environmental condition
Carbon cycle balances the living condition in earth
• Today, human CO2 emission is higher than natural
CO2 absorption → CO2 accumulation in atmosphere
• More CO2 accumulation → greenhouse effect

MOTIVATION AND CHALLENGES
Global warming: disruption on natural balance

• Global warming has begun since early

industrialization due to increasing GHGs
emission [1]
• Climate change driven by global warming
promotes extreme weather across the globe:
heavy precipitation, agricultural and ecological
droughts, heatwaves, and tropical cyclones [2]
• Increase the temperature of the earth will
impact to reduce in GDP. The impact will differ
from one country and others
• Unstoppable of Global warming crisis will
impact, some day, we cannot life in the earth
anymore

SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES IN WORKPLACE
Examples: BDO Belgium

• 2020: Company cars were the biggest source of emissions (72,1%),

followed by heating (7,3%) and commuting (5,8%)
• Objectives were set:
• By 2023: first fleet renewal (appr. 300 cars), H/EV
• Reimbursement for all kinds of public transport, as well as
transport by bike, and offering employees a bike leasing
• Green electricity sources: installing solar panels
• Reducing unnecessary energy usage: neon signs during the day
• More sustainable purchase policy: by considering economical,
environmental and social impacts
• Increasing the visibility of small symbolic actions (such as
sustainability ambassadors) in the office Source: Sustainability Report BDO Belgium, Fiscal Year

Examples from other companies

Disney: food waste energy

• Food waste from their parks are mixed with biosolids to create
biogas and fertilizer
• Impacts: Disney’s biogas facility produces 5,4 MW of heat and
electricity from 120.000 tons of organic waste annually.
Intel: E-Waste Recycling Bins
• Placing e-waste bins in prominent areas at work
• Rewarding employees for their recycling ethos
• Giving employees individual recycling targets to achieve each
monthly target via an app
• Impact: zero waste company in 2019
SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES IN WORKPLACE
Examples from other companies

Patagonia: environmental participation

• Conducting waste audits to understand what can be recycled and composted
in their bins
• Encouraging employees to participate in 5Km runs that support local
environmental groups
• Bike-to-work programs
• Impacts: 4% employee turnover in 2019
Nike: Reusable dishware program
• Eliminate non-recyclable coffee cups
• Host “plastic-free lunch days” where employees don’t bring plastic to work
• Encourage reusable dishware to reduce waste
• Impacts: reducing single-use cups and bottles by 16.000 pounds per quarter
and waste per employee down by 11,5%
