Lesson

1 Holistic Development

Personal development is one of the best ways to protect health, promote

wellbeing and develop a person as a whole. The process of self-actualization and
learning that combines an individual’s physiological, social, cognitive, psychological
and spiritual aspect is called holistic development.

In this lesson, you will be engaged in reflection and action planning in

shaping a holistic plan to prepare you for your future.

What’s In

In the previous lesson, the concepts of Personal Development were

discussed. It is a never-ending process and should start with knowing yourself
first. Each one of us is unique. We may have our own ideal selves but still should
nurture our actual selves. Along our journey towards our goals, we will discover
our personal talents, skills, knowledge and experiences which will help us become
more efficient as a person and will become better in dealing with other people.

Once we already know ourselves fully, we are on our way on becoming a

whole person. However, there are few aspects that we have to understand and that
is the main purpose of this module.

3
Notes to the Teacher
This unit will us make our students understand the process of
developing themselves as a whole person.

What is It

Lesson

2 Aspects of the Self

A deeper look on the different aspects of self can identify specific areas of
self-regulation, stability and improvement. The self-concept is represented by
several aspects as enumerated below:
1. Physical Self - the tangible aspects or the physical attributes of the
self that may include the height, weight, body and facial
appearance.
2. Intellectual Self – the assessment of how well you reason and solve
problems, to create and learn, knowledge, wisdom and insights you have.
3. Emotional Self – these are the typical feelings you have, try to avoid,
enjoy, feelings from your past and present and associated with each
other.
4. Sensual Self – refers to the senses – sight, hearing touching, speaking,
smelling that you use the most in taking information
5. Interactional Self - Include descriptions of your strengths and
weaknesses in intimate relationships and relationships to friends, family,
co-students and strangers in social settings.
6. Nutritional Self – this is how you nourish yourself
7. Contextual Self – describes the area of your maintenance of your living
environment
8. Spiritual Self - include your feelings about yourself and
organized religion, reactions about your spiritual connections to others,
feelings about your spiritual development and history, and thought about
your metaphysical self.
Many individuals put a strong emphasis on the physical aspect of the
self. The body is tangible, obvious and we respond to it easily. It provides a place to
house the spirit (often experienced as feelings) and the mind (often experienced as
thought).
It may be important to some that their mind be prominent and well
educated. The mind is important, as it is the part of the self that directs the other
two aspects. The mind learns what to do and communicates the information to the
body and the feelings. What the mind believes, the body manifests or acts on, and
the emotions feel, or respond with. On the other hand, the human emotions are

5
the most feared aspect of the self, as individuals are reluctant and unprepared to
manage them. Managing feelings is like trying to hold water in the palm of your
hand.

Lesson
The Power Triad: Thoughts,
3 Feelings, Actions
The Story of the two Wolves

The following is an old Cherokee Indian story that is enlightening and

helpful. One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on
inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all."
"It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy,
sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false
pride, superiority, and ego." He continued, "The other is good - he is joy, peace,
love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth,
compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every
other person, too." The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his
grandfather, "Which wolf will win?" The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one
you feed".
Knowing which wolf to feed is the first step towards recognizing you have
control over your own self. Have you ever had thoughts, feelings or acted in ways
that were unacceptable to yourself but felt powerless to control? The purpose of
this story is to help you find ways to manage your mind so that you can live your
life more in accordance with what your own judgment says is best for you.
As we grow up, we gradually become aware of the many things in the
external world which are largely beyond our ability to control. These include other
people in general and most events in our lives. Initially this is difficult to accept,
but a more shocking realization is that there are many things about ourselves that
we
seem powerless to control.
But are we indeed really powerless to control our own maladaptive thoughts,
feelings and actions? The grandfather’s answer "The one you feed" is deceivingly
simple. The results of psychological research indicate that there are at least four
important concepts or ideas implied by the answer:
1. The mind is not the unitary entity it seems to us but consists of different
parts. For example in the story there are the two wolves and the “you” that
chooses between them.
2. These parts of the mind/brain can interact and be in conflict with each
other i.e. the two wolves fight for dominance over our mind and behavior.
3. The “you” has the ability to decide which wolf it will feed.
4. Having made a choice, “you” can decide specifically how to “feed” or
nurture the selected wolf.

What’s More

Activity 1.1 It’s a success!

Read and analyze the success story below. In your journal, answer the
questions that follow.

My Hero: Efren Peñaflorida

“In the Philippines, teenage membership in urban gangs has surged to an
estimated 130,000 in the past 10 years.” Children are pressured to join a gang as
early as 9 years old. Efren Peñaflorida was one of those children.
Peñaflorida was born into a poor family and grew up next to a city dump site
in the slums of the Philippines. Gang activity was rampant in the streets, and
Peñaflorida was often afraid to walk the streets. He remembers being pressured by
a gang leader, and refusing to join. The confrontation gave him a new outlook and
he realized that he could help divert other children like himself from joining gangs
and instead help them become productive members of their community. At age 16,
Peñaflorida and several of his friends started Dynamic Teen Company.
Dynamic Teen Company was created in 1997 to offer his classmates “an
outlet to lift up themselves and their community.” Peñaflorida and his friends
worked on their high school campus, diverting the students’ attention away from
joining violent gangs and instead encouraging self-development activities and
community service. In 1999, the Dynamic Teen Company started Care of
Impoverished Children, a program to reach out to slum children. Every weekend,
Dynamic Teen Company pushes a cart filled with school supplies through the
slums. Children between the ages of 2 and 14 flock to the cart every Saturday to
learn reading, writing, arithmetic, and English from Peñaflorida and his volunteers.
They teach the children to love learning, and the value of education in the hopes of
diverting them from joining gangs. They also started a hygiene clinic, where
children can take a bath and learn basic hygiene, such as brushing their teeth.
At first, Dynamic Teen Company had difficulties convincing others to
support their cause, so they learned to be self-sufficient. They fund their efforts by
recycling old bottles and newspapers, and creating and selling crafts. Dynamic
Teen Company now has more than 10,000 members and has helped more than
1500 children living in the slums. Where others see problems, they see potential,
and have successfully mentored former gang members, addicts, and dropouts.
These former gang members and dropouts are now serving as volunteers,
mentoring other children and helping to raise funds. Dynamic Teen Company
currently has four pushcart classrooms, and they hope to expand so they can give
more children an opportunity to learn and to stay out of gangs.
"I always tell my volunteers that you’re the change that you dream & I am
the change that I dream. And collectively we’re the change that this world needs to
be."

Processing Questions:
1. Can you relate from the character? In what way?
2. What lessons can you learn from the story?
3. How would you like your life story to be told?

A REAL WINNER is one who is able to:

 win over his/her battles and difficulties in life and turns
them into a learning and glorifying experience;
 find meaning in pleasant and unpleasant events in his
life;
 live in peace with difficult people and difficult
situations;
 win the goodwill of others, their respect and admiration;
 get what he wants using win-win strategies; never at
the expense of others;
 discover and use opportunities to his best advantage;
and
 develop and use his talents and abilities to the best
advantage and in so doing, make meaningful
contribution in making this world a better place to live
in.

Let us share our thoughts, feelings and opinions on the following questions.
By taking time to do this, you will learn to better manage your mind, feelings,
and actions and consciously feeding the good wolf in you.
1. How aware are you of the two different opposing “wolves” operating
within your mind, one of which leads to pain and a diminished sense
of life and the other to a joyous, meaningful, and fulfilling life?
2. When was the time you feel disappointed by the choice of behaviour
because you knew that there was a more positive option but you just
didn’t choose it?
3. What ways or techniques or exercises do you use to strengthen
yourself so as to increase its potency to choose and hence control
your life?
4. In what specific ways do you feed the negative wolf?
5. What specific ways do you use to feed the positive wolf?

Activity 1.3 Bloom where you planted

In your journal, draw a pot with an
8-petal flower in it. In each petal, write
down the ways on how you are going to
develop, nurture and take care of the
different aspects of your self. Create this
activity in your journal.
