Welcome to the Personal Development – Grade 11/12 Alternative Delivery


Mode (ADM) Module on Personal Development!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators


both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration
their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of

that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.

(ADM) Module on Personal Development!

The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a
learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant
competencies and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in
your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities
for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be
enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.

What I Need to Know This will give you an idea of the skills or
competencies you are expected to learn in
the module.

What I Know This part includes an activity that aims to


check what you already know about the
lesson to take. If you get all the answers
correct (100%), you may decide to skip this

What’s New In this portion, the new lesson will be

What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master the nature of Personal Development. The scope of this module permits it to
be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the
diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the
standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be
changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

The module is divided into three lessons, namely:


 Lesson 1 – Self-Concept
 Lesson 2 – Personal Effectiveness
 Lesson 3 – Journal Writing

After going through this module, you are expected to:


1. Learn that knowing oneself can make a person accept his/her strengths and
limitations and dealing with others better
2. Share his/her unique characteristics, habits and experiences
3. Start and maintain a journal

What I Know

Write True if the statement is correct and False if the statement is incorrect.
Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Ideal Self is derived from social interactions that provide insight into how
others react to you.
2. The actual self are the characteristics that you are born to have.
3. Your awareness of yourself is called self-concept.
4. Self-knowledge is an image we want ourselves to be.
5. Our ideal self could include factors of what our parents taught us, what we
see from others, our best interest and what the society promotes on us.
6. Personal effectiveness refers to making use of all your personal resources
such as talents, skills, energy and time to achieve your life goals.
7. Your persistence will help you move forward regardless of the obstacles you
may encounter.
8. Knowing yourself does not have any impact in your personal effectiveness.
9. Understanding yourself doesn’t have anything to do with having better
relationships with other people.
10.Determination allows you to focus achieving your specific goals without
being distracted.
11.Self-image is derived from social interactions on how other people will react
to you.
12.Being self-aware will make you determine your own skills, talents,
weaknesses, strengths and even limitations.
13.Skills are not necessary in achieving goals.
14. The actual self can’t be seen by others.
15.One must manage how to combat stress in order to increase efficiency.

Lesson

1 KNOWING ONESELF

In ancient Greece, the famous philosopher Socrates emphasized that an


unexamined life was not worth living hence you have to know thyself while on the
other hand, another Greek philosopher named Aristotle also stated that knowing
yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.
Have you ever asked yourself the question “Who am I?” How much do you
know well about yourself? How do you discover and develop yourself?

This lesson is focused on discovering yourself, accepting your weaknesses


and limitations might as well as making use of your strength to make you
understand yourself and deal with other people better.

What’s In

Personal Development is a very interesting course and is an essential part of


a person’s success and happiness. It will consist of ideas and techniques to
improve yourself and views in life. Personal growth and development is a never-
ending process. It can sometimes be hard and conflicting but the reward is
fulfilling. All you have to do is enjoy the journey!

What is It

As you look into the mirror, you can actually see your actual self. These are
the traits we are born with and nurtured as we grow. The actual self is built on
self-knowledge. Self-knowledge is derived from social interactions that provide
insight into how others react to you. The actual self is who we actually are. It is
how we think, how we feel, look, and act. It can be seen by others, but because we
have no way of truly knowing how others view us, the actual self is our self-image.
However, there are certain thoughts that as we look at other people, we wish
to have the traits they have. This is when we thought of our ideal self. This include
components of what our parents have taught us, what our society promotes, what
we admire in others and what we think best for ourselves. The actual self and the
ideal self are two broad categories of self-concept which refers to your awareness
of yourself.

Lesson

2 Personal Effectiveness

Knowing oneself must grow deeper with the understanding of discovering


yourself, on how you react on things, decide, relate on your surroundings, and
giving importance to your strengths and limitations.
In order to do so, you need as well to make use of your talents, skills, energy
and time to achieve your goals. This is called personal effectiveness and your
knowledge to yourself makes a direct impact on this. Talents are first needed to be
identified and developed. Experience includes knowledge and skills that we acquire
in the process. Your knowledge is required for setting goals, defining an action
plan to achieve them and risk assessment while skills determine whether your
actions are performed according to your plan. Below are the skills that will help you
increase your efficiency:

 Determination - It allows you to focus only on achieving a specific


goal
without being distracted by less important things or spontaneous
desires.
 Self-confidence - It appears in the process of personal development,
as a result of getting aware of yourself, your actions and their
consequences.
 Persistence – It makes you help keep moving forward regardless of
emerging obstacles.
 Managing Stress – It helps you combat stress that arises in daily life
from the environment and other people.
 Problem-solving skills – They help you cope with the problems
encountered with lack of experience.
 Creativity – It allows you to find extraordinary ways to carry out a
specific action that no one has tried to use.
 Generating ideas – This helps you to achieve goals using new,
original and unconventional ideas.

Lesson

3 Journal Writing

The purpose of Journal Writing is to help you set goals, reflect and track
your daily growth by jotting it down in a piece of notebook. It yields self-awareness
in which way you will know what your reactions are in different situations. It will
also boost your imagination. In addition, writing is your time alone. It is a way of
loving yourself more and not letting anyone judge you.

In order to know yourself, you have first to identify the basic information.
Below is a personal identity wheel that will help you know yourself better. Create
this activity in your journal.

Self-awareness includes our personality traits, values, emotions, habits,
thoughts and actions. It mostly happens during our self-reflection. The following
activities will help you contemplate and know yourself better.

My Personal Mission Statement


A personal mission statement explains who you are and want to be, and
what you stand for. You can use it to guide you when making choices and
decisions, large and small, by asking yourself—“Does it help me become who I want
to be? ‟A personal mission statement also helps you explain who you are to others.
A personal mission statement should answer 3 questions:
1) What is my life about—what is my life’s purpose?
2) What do I stand for—what are my values?
3) What accomplishments am I working toward that will help me fulfil my
life’s purpose in a manner consistent with my values?
In your journal, with the guide above, create your own personal mission
statement. May you keep that personal mission statement with you and look at it
several times during the day—see how it makes you feel.

Assessment

Identify the words being described by the statements in each item. Write your
