GROUP PROJECT ECM 366
Semester OCTOBER 2023 - FEBRUARY 2024

1.0 Introduction

Project Title:
Cost estimation for Single-Storey Structural Drawings Building Construction

Problem Statement:
In the field of civil engineering, accurate cost estimation for construction projects is critical to
ensure project viability and financial sustainability. One of the key elements contributing to
accurate cost estimation is the evaluation of structural drawings, as these drawings provide
essential information about the materials and methods required for construction. However, the
real-life variability in the quality and clarity of structural drawings can lead to discrepancies in cost
estimation, potentially resulting in budget overruns or financial losses for construction projects.

The problem at hand is to develop a systematic and reliable evaluation process for structural
drawings in civil engineering to enhance the accuracy of cost estimation for engineering materials.

The goal of this group project is focuses on the evaluation of structural drawings of single-story
structures in the context of a real-life project implementation in civil engineering practices.

Objective:
The objective of this project is to manage a set of structural designs on a single-story or only the
lower floor of a building consisting of a second-floor. These drawings will serve as the basis for
analyzing materials construction costs and planning management for the construction of the
specified building.

Method:
This group project will represent 30% of the overall assessment percentage for the course. To
accomplish this assignment, the maximum number of students in a group must not be more
than four and find the completed structural drawings that must include the layout and detailing of
structures, as well as the preparation of a taking-off sheet to estimate the total amount of materials
required to complete the project construction. Section 4.0 outline the details of the tasks that
must be completed, as well as rubrics designed to assess the prescribed course and learning
outcomes.
2.0 Course Outcomes (CO), Programme Outcomes (PO), Well Defined Engineering
Problems (DP) and Knowledge Profiles (DK)

This project will address two (2) course outcomes (COs) and two (2) programme outcomes (POs),
which are related to relevant Well Defined Engineering Problems (DPs) and Knowledge Profiles
(DKs) that students must demonstrate, as defined in Table 1.

Table 1: Mapping Course Outcomes (CO) - Programme Outcomes (PO) with Well Defined

3.0 Learning Outcomes

Based on the COPO-DP-DK-NA mapping above, at the end of this Group Project the Learning
Outcomes to be attained by the students are as follows:

LO1 : Prepare taking off sheet and Bill of Quantities for concrete, reinforcement, and
formwork of building structural drawings (CO2-PO5)(P5)
LO2 : Manage appropriate engineering tools to organize the project activities. (CO2-
PO5)(P5)
LO3 : Justify the need of cost estimate for the main structure in depth which
provide foundation for expanded knowledge. (CO3-PO12)(A5)

4.0 Task to be Carried Out

Each group must find a comprehensive drawing of a single-storey building or ground floors only if
the students refer to the double-storey building. Each group is assigned with the following task:
i) Prepare the taking off for all structural drawings’ elements (pad footing, stump/ column, beam and
slab) by referring to the concrete, reinforcement and formwork.
ii) Prepare a comprehensive Bill of Quantities (BQ) in accordance with Malaysian Civil Engineering
Standard Methods of Measurement (myCESMM) to estimate the overall material cost. The cost
of each of the materials involved can be obtained from any supplier according to the current price
offered (attach the obtained price in the appendix)
iii) By using Microsoft Project, create a project timeline and estimate the time it will take to finish the
project, as well as the cost of the workers and machinery.
iv) Determine the type of contract that can be proposed for this project by stating the justification why
the contract was chosen.
v) Based on the drawing and by using the appropriate scale, each group must produce a prototype
using any recycled item. (DP3 : DEPTH OF ANALYSIS REQUIRED; DK 4 :ENGINEERING
SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE; DK 6: CODIFIED PRACTICAL ENGINEERING KNOWLEDGE).
Please select ONE of the following suggestions of miniature model / prototype of:
- Formwok system for a single-storey building structures (from pad footing and stump until
ground floor; ground beam and ground slab)
- Formwork system and reinforcement of any ONE (1) of the following combination
structure:
• Pad Footing and Stump
• Beam and Slab
- If there is a small river that needs to be crossed to get to this project area, suggest a road
embankment with a bridge as an entrance to the completed project area.

Notes:

i) Work in a group of not more than four students to complete the task.
ii) Produce a report by following the format given.
iii) Use the Standard Material Taking Off sheet and Bill of Quantities (BQ) in accordance with
MyCESMM.

Well-Defined Engineering Problems:

(CO2-PO5)(P5) - (DP1, DP3 & DP4) (DK3, DK4 & DK6)
Submission of Report

Based on the given tasks above, student needs to prepare a report in a group that contains details as
below:

i) Detailed drawing of pad footing, stump, slab, column, and beam (Appendices)
ii) Taking-off sheets for the calculation of the item required.
iii) Bill of quantities (BQ) for estimated project cost for all main structures.
iv) The price rate of materials (Appendices)

Deadline:

Report submission: Week 14

Report writing guidelines:

i. The report must have a minimum of 10 pages and a maximum of 30 pages (excluding
appendices).
ii. When searching for information, it is important to include a correct citation in the report
