Exam Flanges
Exam Flanges
Exam Flanges
Part I: True or False. Write T if the statement is true and F if the statement is false.
Erasure is not allowed. Five points each. FBC – Flange-Bolt Coupling
Part II: Problem Solving. Solve the following problems on a separate sheet of paper and
show all logical solutions. Final answer should contain the correct unit. Each problem is
worth ten points.
1. A 12-mm bolt has a shearing strength of 40 MPa. What flange thickness is required to hold this
bolt in place using a flange with a bearing strength of 20 MPa?
2. A flange 12 mm thick has eight holes 10 mm in diameter. The flange has a certified bearing
strength of 32 MPa. What bolt circle diameter would give the flange and the eight holes a
capacity of 2500 N-m of torque?
3. Calculate the toque capacity of six 8-mm bolts on a 120-mm bolt circle if the bolts have a
shearing strength of 35 MPa.
4. How many 8-mm bolts on a 400-mm bolt circle are required to transmit 1.6 kN-m of torque if
the bolts are rated 30 MPa on their shearing strength?
5. A flange-bolt coupling consists of six bolts on a 200-mm bolt circle and eight bolts on a 250-mm
bolt circle. The bolts are all 10 mm in diameter and are designed to shear at 42 MPa. Calculate
the capacity of the coupling.
6. To what diameter could the inner bolts in Problem 5 be reduced without affecting the torque
transmitted by the FBC? Assume that the new bolts have the same shearing strength of 42 MPa.
7. A flange-bolt coupling is to transmit 50 kW of power at 240 rpm using eight bolts on a 600-mm
bolt circle. The bolts are designed to shear at 20 MPa. What diameter of bolts should be used?
8. In problem 5, how many of the outer bolts carry just a little over 50% of the torque?
9. An FBC has four 10-mm bolts with shearing strength of 20 MPa and a torque capacity of 1500
N-m. Calculate the diameter of the bolt circle.
10. The flange in an FBC has eight holes 10 mm in diameter on a 600-mm bolt circle. The flange
has a compressive strength of 120 MPa and is 15 mm thick. What is the torque capacity of the
flange?
11. What should be the minimum shearing strength of the bolts in Problem 9 if they are to transmit
the same toque as the FBC? (No factor of safety!)
12. A flange-bolt coupling has six 10-mm bolts with shearing strength of 20 MPa on a 180-mm bolt
circle and eight 10-mm bolts with a shearing strength of 30 MPa on a 240-mm bolt circle. What
is the torque capacity of the coupling?
