B. Background Information for Learners (Discussion of Topic/Lesson) Key Concept

Tools, Implements, and Equipment for Land Preparation

Farm tools, implements, and equipment play very important role in agricultural crop production. Their
availability makes the work much easier and faster. However, even if one may have the most
sophisticated tools and implements, but does not know how to use them, they are useless. In order
to do crop production operations successfully, one must have a good working knowledge of the tools,
implements and equipment before using them.

A. Hand Tools
Hand tools are the most simple tools since they are used with your bare hands in performing
farm operation and practices in a small farm or vegetable garden in the backyard or in school.

Bolo is a large cutting tool used for

cutting tall grasses and weeds and
cutting branches of trees

Axe is used to split and cut a bigger size

post

Sickle/scythe is a hand tool that has a

curved blade attached to a short handle
which is used for harvesting grains or
cutting grasses.

Spade is a gardening tool with a flat and

sharp edge which is used for digging or
loosening soil.

Shovel is a tool for digging, lifting,

moving bulky materials from one place
to another, removing trash, and mixing
soil media.
Grub-hoe is a heavy hoe used for
breaking hard topsoil and pulverizing
soil.

Rake is a long-handled tool used for

cleaning the ground by gathering the
leaves and for loosening or leveling the
soil.

Pick mattock is used for digging canals,

breaking hard topsoil and for digging up
stones and tree stumps.

Grass cutter is a device used to

cut grass

B. Farm Implements
These are accessories which are pulled by working animals or mounted machineries
(hand tractor, tractor) and which are usually used in the preparation of land. These are usually
made of a special kind of metal.

Plow - farm implement pulled by either a

working animal or a tractor. It is specifically
used for tilling large areas, making furrows
and inters row cultivation.

Harrow. The native wooden harrow is

made of wood with metal teeth and pulled
by a carabao, while the disc harrow is made
of metal mounted to a tractor. Harrows are
used for tilling and pulverizing the soil.
Rotavator - is an implement mounted to a
tractor used for tilling and pulverizing the
soil

C. Farm Equipment
Farm equipment are machineries used in land preparation and in transporting farm
inputs and products. To use these machineries, a highly skilled operator is needed to perform
the task.

Hand tractor - is use to pull a plow and

harrow in preparing the field for planting.

Four-wheel tractor - is use to pull a disc

plow and a disc harrow in preparing a much
wider area of land.

Land Preparation
Land preparation is inevitable in crop production and it is important is important to ensure that the
field is ready for planting. Land preparation is define as the process of preparing the soil to provide
a favorable soil environment for plant and growth . Good land preparation is the foundation for
successful crop production and contributes to long-term soil fertility, soil moisture retention and weed
management. Done with the right implements at the right time it makes planting and weeding easier
resulting in higher yields.

Steps in Preparing the Land for Planting

1. Clearing
Clearing is the removal of native vegetation for agricultural
purposes and other developmental projects. When
clearing land, particularly for agricultural purposes, the
density of native cover and soil type must be considered to
help conserve the topsoil. It can be accomplished by grass
cuter, sharp bolos or any tools that will serve the purpose.

2. Plowing

Plowing is the process of breaking the soil surface at

exact dept. It can be accomplished with a moldboard
plow hitched to carabao or a disc plow attached to a
tractor. Good plowing stimulates plant growth by
opening the compact upper surface of the soil so roots
can develop quickly, taking nutrients, water, and
oxygen from the soil. Moisture is absorbed easily,
seeping down to deeper areas where it can act as a
reserve during dry periods.
3. Harrowing

Harrowing is the process of breaking the soil clods into

finer soil particles. Harrowing is a method of hallow
cultivation of soil and care of agricultural crops. It is
accomplished by toothed or disk harrows and revolving
hoes. This can be done using a harrow drawn by an
animal or a machine in bigger farms. Harrowing can
create a crumbly layer for planting, protect the soil
surface from rapid drying, improve both the air the
water permeability into soil, improve microbiological
process, and improve nutrient availability to plants.

4. Levelling

Levelling is a process for ensuring that the depths and

discharge variations over the field are relatively
uniform. Levelling the soil in the field is done by using
an implement called leveller. It is a heavy wooden
plank or an iron plank. Benefits of land leveling includes
higher yield, better weed control, less work, and better
use of water.
