Let’s Explore and Discover

The different materials, tools, and equipment used in crop production work have
been profoundly taken up in your lessons last year. Their proper operations and
maintenance were discussed too.

The availability of farm tools, implements, and equipment is one of the important
factors needed to make farm work easier, better, and faster. It will play a very
important role in performing properly the different agronomic crop works with imphasis
on their correct operation and maintenance.

However, their availability alone does not guarantee success in agronomic crop
works if the farmer does not know their proper uses.

HAND TOOLS
Hand tools are usually light and are used without the help of animals or
machines. They are being used in performing farm activities which involve small yet
important jobs to be done.

2
The following are some of the examples of hand tools and their functions:
Hand Tools Functions
Bolo

 used for cutting of weeds particularly

tall shrubs and grasses

 used in removing trash, digging loose,

Shovel soil moving soil from one place to
another,
and for mixing soil media and
fertilizers
 used in the repair and construction of
slevees and in irrigation management
 used for cleaning the ground and
Rake levelling the top soil during seedbed
preparatio (dry method) of seedling
production.
 used for cleaning the ground and
levelling the top soil during seedbed
preparatio(dry method) of seedling
production
Crowbar

 used for digging big holes and for

digging big holes and for digging out
bis stones

Pick-
mattock
 used for digging canals, breaking hard
top soil, and digging uo stones and
tree stumps

Grub Hoe

 used for breaking hard top soil and

pulverizing soil

3
Spade
 used for removing trash or soil,
digging used for removing trash or
soil, digging canals or ditches, and
mixing soil media

Spading
Fork  used for loosening the soil, digging out
root crops, and turning over the
materials in a compost heap

Scythe

 used for harvesting rice and for

cutting grasses for animal feeds

knapsack
Sprayer

 used for applying insecticides,

herbicides, and other foliar fertilizers

Wheel
barrow
 used for hauling and transporting
growing media, fertilizers and farm
supplies

FARM IMPLEMENTS

These are accessories which are being pulled by working animals or mounted
to machineries (hand tractor, tractor) which are usually used in the preparation of large
tract of land. These are usually made of metal or wooden.

The following are examples:

4
1. Plow - is specifically used for tilling large areas, making furrows, inter-row
cultivation and ditches to facilitate irrigation and
drainage.

 Native plow - is made of either combination of

metal or wood or pure metal pulled by working
animals, used to till areas with shallower
depth.

 Disc plow - is made of metal disc mounted and

pulled by tractor used to till large tract of land.

2. Harrow - are used for tilling and pulverizing the

soil.
 Native harrow - is made of wood with a metal
tooth and pulled by a working animal used for
tilling and pulverizing the dry soil while
waiting for the rain or water supply.

 Disc harrow - is made of metal disc

mounted and pulled by tractor used for tilling
and pulverizing the soil especially on a large tract
of land.

3. Rotavator - an implement attached to a tractor used

for land preparation. It could be used for wet and
dry land preparation.

One passing of rotavator is equivalent to the

combined effect of one plowing and harrowing in
land preparation.

EQUIPMENT
These are machineries used in farm operations
especially in rice production. They are used in land
preparation and in transporting farm inputs and produce. Using these equipment
requires highly skilled operator.

5
1. Hand tractor - is used to pull a plow and harrow
in preparing the field for planting. It is also used
to transport other materials from house to the
farm, and serves as mobility of the farmers.

2. Four wheel tractor - it is used to pull disc plow,

disc harrow and rotavator in preparing much
wider land area. It is used to draw a trailer to
transport bulk of materials, equipment, farm
inputs, and also during and post harvest activities.

3. Water pump - it is used to draw irrigation water

from a source such as deep well, rivers and lakes to
irrigate the field. When water is scarce, another
cropping can be done using a water pump.

4. Thresher - this equipment is used to thresh the

harvested rice by separating the grains from its rice
stalk.

5. Combined harvester - it performs the harvesting

and treshing at the same time. The grains are
deposited in its compartment.
