equipment (i.e., panel boards switchgears) are specifications.

Definition of Terms

1. Demand Factor - The ratio of maximum demand of a system,

or a part of a system, to the total connected load of the system, or part of
a system under consideration. This factor is always less than unity or
1.0.

𝑀𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑚𝑢𝑚 𝐷𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑑
Formula: D.F. =
𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑛𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝐿𝑜𝑎𝑑

2. Diversity Factor – The ratio of the sum of the individual

maximum demands of the various subdivisions of a system (or part of a
system) to the maximum demand of the whole system (or part of the
system under consideration). This factor generally varies between 1.00
to 2.00.

𝐼𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝑀𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑚𝑢𝑚 𝐷𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑑

Formula: Div. F. =
𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑀𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑚𝑢𝑚 𝐷𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑑

Lighting Feeders: 1.0 to 1.5

Power and Lighting Feeders: 1.50 to 2.0 (or higher)

3. Overcurrent – Any current in excess of the rated current of the

equipment or ampacity of conductor. It may result from overload, short
– circuit or ground fault.

4. Feeder – The conductors between the final overcurrent device

protecting the circuit.

5. Sub – Feeders – A set of conductors originating at a

distribution center other than the main distribution center and
supplying one or more other distribution panelboards, branch circuit
panelboards or branch circuits.

6. Branch Circuit – The conductors between the final overcurrent

protecting load.

ELECTRICAL STANDARDS AND PRACTICES

7. Service Entrance Conductors – The service conductors

between the terminals of the service equipment and a point usually
outside the building.

8. Receptacle – A contact device installed at the outlet for the

connection of an attachment plug, or for the direct connection of
electrical utilization equipment.

9. Equipment Grounding Conductor (EGC) – The conductive

paths that provides a ground – fault current path and connects normally
no – current carrying metal parts of equipment together and to the system
grounded conductor or to the grounding electrode conductor, or both.

10. Overcurrent Protective Device (OCPD) – A device capable of

providing protection for service, feeder and branch circuits and
equipment over the full range of over – currents between its rated current
and interrupting rating.

Such devices are provided with interrupting ratings appropriate for

the intended use but no less than 5 000 amperes (A).

11. Nominal or Continuous Current Rating – The value of

current that it can safely and properly carry for periods of 3 hours or
more. Generally taken to be the same as its trip setting – the value of

3
Computer Arts and Technological College, Inc.
Legazpi ● Ligao ● Polangui

ELECTRICAL STANDARDS AND PRACTICES

current at which the breaker will open, either instantaneously or after

some intentional time delay.

12. Interrupting (kAIC) Rating – The highest current at rated

voltage that a device is identified to interrupt under standard test
conditions. Rating is expressed as kilo – Amperes Interrupting Capacity
(kAIC).

13. Ampere Frame (Frame Size) – The circuit breaker frame

includes all the various components that make up a circuit breaker
except for the trip unit. For any given frame, circuit breakers with a range
of the current ratings can be manufactured by installing a different trip
unit for each rating. The breaker frame is the highest continuous current
rating offered for a breaker with a given frame.

14. Wire - A wire is measured by diameter. According to the

diameter of the wire, it will be measured by a gauge number. The smaller
the gauge number, the thicker the wire. The perfect gauge that is used in
residential applications is 10 & 20. But, do keep in mind that big wires
carry more current and can damage household appliances by burning
the fuse. A wire is used to carry electricity, to bear the mechanical loads,
to transmit telecommunication signals, for heating jeweler, clothing,
automotive or any industrial manufactured parts like pins, bulbs and
needles.

15. Cable - A cable contains a hot wire carrying the current, a

neutral wire to complete the loop and a grounding wire as well. A cable
is classified by the total number of wires it is made up of and their gauge.
A cable is used for power transmission, for telecommunication signals or
to carry electricity.

ELECTRICAL STANDARDS AND PRACTICES

Problem 1: A single family dwelling is to be circuited with the following

requirements as shown.

Determine the:

a. Size of branch circuit wire

for lighting outlets.

b. Size of the Conduit pipes

c. Size or rating of the fuse

protective device.

Solution:

Circuit 1: Lighting Outlets

1. From the figure above, determine the number of lighting outlets. By direct
counting, there are 8 light outlets.

The National Electrical Code provides that:

“100 watts shall be the maximum load for each household lighting
outlet”

Adopting the 100 W per lighting outlet:

8 outlets x 100 = 800 watts

2. Determine the Total Current Load

800 𝑊
𝐼= = 3.48 𝐴
230 𝑉

3. Determine the size of conductor wire

12
Computer Arts and Technological College, Inc.
Legazpi ● Ligao ● Polangui

ELECTRICAL STANDARDS AND PRACTICES

Use 2 – 2.0 𝑚𝑚2 or No. 14 TW copper wire having an ampacity of 20

A that is much larger than 3.48 amperes computed maximum load.

4. Determine the size of the Conduit Pipe

The smallest diameter of a conduit pipe that could accommodate

up to 3 pieces of No. 14 TW conductor wire is 15 mm diameter. Therefore,
specify 15 mm dia (1/2) conduit pipe.

5. Determine the size or rating of the fuse / Circuit breaker protective

(Refer to Table A – 2: Standard ampere rating for fuses and circuit breaker)

Use 15 AT Circuit Breaker (or fuse), 2 – Pole, 60 AF

National Electrical Code provides that:

“Ampacity of the connected load shall not exceed 80% of the

amperage capacity of the conductor and the fuse”

[ From the table A – 2, the maximum ampacity load of 2.0 𝑚𝑚2 or No. 14
AWG copper wire is 15 A. 80% of 15 amperes is 12, the maximum allowable
load of the circuit is sufficient enough to carry a current of 3.48 A computed
load maximum 100 W per light outlet.]

Circuit 2: Convenience Outlet

National Electrical Code provides that

“For each single receptacle shall be considered at no less than 180

watts rating”

Simply mean that, each convenience outlet, is considered to have

maximum load of not less than 180 watts per plug or gang. Thus:

13
Computer Arts and Technological College, Inc.
Legazpi ● Ligao ● Polangui

ELECTRICAL STANDARDS AND PRACTICES

1. There are 6 convenience receptacles for small appliance load.

Considering that there are two plug per outlet, the total number of plugs
will be:

6 outlets x 2 plug = 12 pieces

2. Compute the Total Estimated Loads

12 x 180 watts / outlet = 2, 160 W

3. Determine the Maximum Expected Current Load

2 160 𝑊
𝐼= = 9.39 𝐴
230 𝑉

4. Determine the size of conductor.

Standard size for convenience outlet: 2 – 3.5 𝑚𝑚2 TW copper wire.

5. Determine the size of the conduit pipe.

15 mm dia (1/2) or 20 mm dia (3/4)

6. Determine the Overcurrent Protection.

The standard circuit breaker for convenience outlets is 20 AT,

2P, 60 AF which is permitted on 3.5 𝑚𝑚2 .

Circuit 3: Other Loads

1 – unit electric stove at 1.1 kW 1, 100 W

1 – unit water heater at 2.5 kW 2, 500 W

Total 3, 600 W

1. Compute the current load:

3 600 𝑊
𝐼= = 15.65 𝐴
230 𝑉

14
Computer Arts and Technological College, Inc.
Legazpi ● Ligao ● Polangui

ELECTRICAL STANDARDS AND PRACTICES

2. Determine the size of the conductor wire:

Use 2 – 3.5 𝑚𝑚2 TW copper wire.

3. Determine the size of the conduit pipe.

Use 15 mm dia (1/2) or 20 mm dia (3/4)

4. Determine the size or rating of Overcurrent Protection

Use 20 AT – circuit breaker, 2P, 60 AF.

[ The circuit breaker rating is 20 A. Granting that it will be derated at

80% x 20, the 16 amperes derated value is still higher than the computed
load of 15.65 A. Therefore, the 20 AT is accepted.]

Finding the size of Service Entrance

The size of service entrance being the supply conductor and

equipment for delivering energy from the electricity supply to the wiring
system of the building, is also computed based on the total load supplied
by the branch circuit.

Solve the total load of the circuits

𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑛𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝐿𝑜𝑎𝑑
Total Current Load = 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑅𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔

(800+2 160+3 600)𝑊+2000𝑊(𝑠𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑒)

Total Current Load = 230 𝑉

Total Current Load = 37.217 A

Apply 80% demand factor as permitted

15
Computer Arts and Technological College, Inc.
Legazpi ● Ligao ● Polangui

ELECTRICAL STANDARDS AND PRACTICES

37.217 x 80% = 29.773 A

Find the Size of the Service Wire:

Use 2 – 8.0 𝑚𝑚2 THWN copper wire

[ NEC provides that: Service entrance shall have the sufficient ampacity to
carry the building load. They shall have adequate mechanical strength and
shall not be smaller than 8.0 𝑚𝑚2 or 3.2 mm diameter except for
installation to supply limited load of a single branch circuit such as small
polyphase power, controlled water heaters and the like and they shall not
be smaller than 3.5 𝑚𝑚2 or 2.0 mm diameter copper or equivalent.]

Determine the size of Conduit Pipe:

Use 20 mm diameter pipe (3/4)

Note: A demand factor of 80% was applied considering that not all
receptacles and outlets are being used simultaneously.

Main disconnecting means

40 AT Circuit Breaker, 2P, 60 AF (Total Current Load with 80%

demand factor is 29.773, it is almost 30 A. Therefore, use higher ampacity
circuit breaker. For future expansion make it, 60 AT, 2P, 60 AF)

Multi – Ground System and Line to Line Service

The protection of branch circuit is tapped to the hot line or live

wire. The grounded line being neutral zero voltage, is not protected with
fuse (CB). This one advantage of the multi – ground system being adopted
by the electric cooperative implemented by rural electrification program
of the government.

B. Computation of the Main Feeder: Wye Connection

The computation of Circuit 1- 12 is the same as Delta. The FLC of 7.5

Hp at 400 V is equal to 14 A.

Rating of Circuit Breaker:

250% x FLC = 2.5 x 14 A = 35 A

Use 40 AT, 3P, 60 AF, 5 KAIC Circuit Breaker

Rating of Conductor:

125% x FLC = 1.25 x 14 A = 17.5 A

Use 5.5 𝑚𝑚2 THWN + 3.5 𝑚𝑚2 TW EGC copper conductor

Use 25 mm diameter PVC Pipe
