CHAPTER ONE

1.0 Introduction

Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999 coupled with the successive democratic transitions has
opened up the space for freedom of expression. It is in pursuance of the objective to
comprehensively democratize the access and use of information, to extend the boundaries of
freedom of expression in the country that the process for more liberation of the airwaves was
initiated in 2003. The process was to expand the existing plurality in the broadcasting landscape
of the country with the hope that it incorporates community broadcasting to complete the
liberalization and opening up of the airwaves as enshrined in the National Broadcasting Law
(Pate & Abubakar 2013, p.172). Communication is a basic human right; the prominence placed
on this freedom of expression is substantial because human lives depend basically on
communication. Without communication, heaven and earth would not have been, in the book of
Genesis which gives account of the creation laid credence to the importance of communication.,
God made use to communication, in Genesis chapter 1 vs 3, God said “let there be light and
there was light”, so it can be assumed that God communicated to get light which is a pivotal
element in the world. To be fully human, people must communicate, without communication
there will not be real community since it is the link between individuals that constitute
community and society, and the link between communities from nation. It is impossible for any
society to prosper without sufficient communication and information. Quoting Tiamiyu
(2002:29), information is defined as “recorded messages that convey meaning to both the
creator(s) and intended user(s) of the message”. Communication to him is the process by which
the context of messages is composed, structured and transferred by senders and subsequently
received and interpreted by recipients.

A broadcast station is an organization that transmits programmes through the airwaves using
designated electromagnetic frequencies for specific community purposes, regularly at no cost to
the community Daramola (2005). Radio broadcasting plays a major role in world information,
entertainment and education because it is the primary means by which individuals are
enlightened. With modern technology, radio can be carried around without it being obvious.
Advances in technology may have led to the emergence of broad range of media outlets and
platforms, but it has also made radio more accessible for populations that lack access to other
means of information technology, which is why it very much relevant today. According to Hasan
(2014), radio does not require power-line for operation and so, people across the world even in
remote areas devoid of power-lines can also receive messages from this medium. Due to its
portability and easy accessibility, radio can find its place everywhere and its major advantages
over mass medium of communication is that virtually everyone can access it because of its
affordability and also for the fact that it is meant for communication. Human beings differ in
their views and understanding of things. Some individuals perceive programmes aired on radio in
a positive light while others do not. Listeners’ preferences and priorities regarding radio
attributes can be seen to vary considerably by content-based, technical and expertise. Therefore,
there is need for audience research, but it is appalling that a good deal of broadcasting activities
go on without much effort being made to find out what is really happening at the other end. But
with research, radio station image can be enhanced in content, technology and expertise to meet
the needs of the audience and also ascertain their mindset concerning a radio station’s
performance. In Nigeria today, sometimes radio programmes fail due to the inability of
presenters to protect the importance of those programmes to listeners, non-expertise as well as
technical issues and good presentation helps a station generate large number of listeners. A big
part of the radio listeners are the youthful population which is dominated primarily by students.

Radio programmes play major roles, from enlightening listeners to educating them. There are
several radio stations that cut across all the states of the country. Over the years, and even since
the invention of radio and television in 1923 and 1939 respectively, both media have remained
the major source through which people get information, Radio Radio AAUA 90.3 is a radio
station which was established in 2017 in Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko. The
station is a potent public entertainment station and also a campus radio through which the people
of Ondo and its environ get information. This station beyond its watchdog and entertainment
roles, also promotes educational values via its porgrammes being a campus radio. One of its
education oriented programmes is Youth Vibe which is usually broadcast daily between the
hours of 4:00pm5:00pm. Students of the school who listen to this programme maybe be said to
do so because of the educational benefits they derive from it and by so doing, they are bound to
react to these programmes. Therefore, this then forms the basis upon which this study is
undertaken.
