    The birdnest industry is worth multi million dollars in Asia. Malaysia alone exports about ten tonnes of what is considered the finest bird nests in the market, in comparisons to rival exporters from Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia and the Philippines. The local birdnest industry has reached 300kg output a month, with a kilogramme of unprocessed birdnests fetching around USD$1500 (RM4500). Once they are cleaned, processed, treated and packed, the same kilogramme can cost as much as

    Malaysian Standards (MS) for Edible-Birdnest industry. The Technical Committee on Edible-Birdnest (EBN) Swiftlet Ranching which developed the Malaysian Standards referred to in this seminar was established within the National Standards Development Systems under the purview of STANDARDS MALAYSIA, a government agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).

    About the standards:

    MS 2273: 2010 prescribes the requirements in ranching practices of ediblebirdnest swiftlets. It relates to the establishment of good animal husbandry practice for continuous improvement and sustainable production of its produce, whilst ensuring health, safety and comfort to both the operators and the birds, with no degradation to the environment MS 2333: 2010 provides a guideline for the EBN processors for the production of quality and safe EBN for human consumption MS 2334: 2010 prescribes the requirements for the grading of raw-unclean EBN and raw-clean EBN.

    Adherence to these standards would demonstrate compliance to best practice as well as ensure production of finest quality birdnest, in tandem with current market demand.
