CHAPTER 2
2. SWOT Analysis
SWOT basically stands for strength, weakness, opportunity, and threat. It is an analysis
used to internal and external factors of the organization. Internal factors include strengths
and weakness. External factors include opportunity and threat. SWOT is an acronym for,
Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. So, to classify factors under these four
categories we need to ask several SWOT analysis questions. Not just any questions but
specific questions as per business and context were asked, attached at appendix, and
following are the findings:
2.1. Strengths
They have a dedicated team and highly trained professionals who have market
experience of 20 plus years.
They have maintained a good culture and positive environment which promotes growth
and people are less likely to be absent.
Employees are happy to meet and greet in the office because of flexibility in the
environment.
They don't bound people to subtle tasks and limited capabilities.
They encourage proper working space and there's no strict one-hour restrictions on the
break timing as they're also okay with the employees taking extra time out.
Giving opportunities to undergraduates in different departments.
2.2. Weakness
It happens too often that people tend to misuse the leverage granted to them.
16
People sometimes tend to focus less on the work in the office which they have to
complete later from their homes so that kind of disturbs their work-life balance a bit as
well.
People are often missing out on specific time frames and deadlines.
People often come late due to which proper coordination is disturbed.
Incentives and bonuses are not given to employees.
Due to budget constraints, they are unable to expand their business to other cities.
They do not have separate departments for different fields.
2.3. Opportunities
Opportunities are in abundance for the internees and there are many I.T Certifications
also conducted by them, so they provide a lot of learning and career growth
opportunities.
Hiring young Graduates and on merit employees will support organization’s major
functions and units.
They can go for diversification and can capture other markets and cites as well.
One opportunity is to streamline business operations and communicate more effectively
with customers, suppliers, or partners.
Increasing the efficiency of staff by providing different certifications and training.
As of now they are only focusing on creating applications and websites, they have the
opportunity to create CRM, ERP systems.
2.4. Threats
Threat is of retention because other companies offer quite handsome packages and
benefits which may attract more employees as they realize their worth and importance
and then it would be on them if they fail to retain their workforce.
Strong hold of old competitors and emergence of new competitors.
Viruses and worms can destroy the system and data.
17
Whenever employee switches to another company they tend to take company’s code with
them illegally.
Competitors may have new, innovative product or service which as they have more
market knowledge.
Customer dissatisfaction may destroy brand image.
CHAPTER 3
3. Internship Plan
I saw the job ad on LinkedIn and opened the ad in which link was given, as I opened the
link it directed me to company’s Official Website. I received call within two days of my
application and was interviewed. Their office is in Bahria Town Islamabad. After the
interview I received Offer Letter, due to my final term examination I requested to join
immediately after papers and was permitted. On 17 th July 2023, I officially joined the
company. At first, I reported to HR Department, and I got orientation on my first day. It
was a pleasant experience, and all the employees were very cooperative.

CHAPTER 4
4. RECOMMENDATION, LEARNINGS AND CONCLUSION
4.1. Recommendations
I would like to recommend that Appologix should focus on enhancing the business,
recruiting more staff for work efficiency and growth of product and business
expansion.
Job training sessions should be conducted before start of job of every employee.
Incentives and bounces should be given to the employees.
Certifications for each staff for their respective field should be initiated.
Employee of the month reward should be given to best performers on monthly basis
for motivating employees.
One thing about this business that I really like is that everybody who works here will really
support the intern. As an example, I've had a number of work-related issues. Our manager
was extremely helpful. So, they should carry on this kind of job for more internee to come,
which will help a student to learn great things from this company.
22
Filing and maintaining record.
Running social media campaigns and how to keep ourselves up to date in rapidly
changing trends.
Two main things that I’ve learned the importance of our time-management skills
and self-motivation.
4.3. Conclusion
I would like to conclude that I felt very lucky to be part of Appologix as the
workplace had professional working culture to offer. My motivation for the
temporary position separated from being a degree necessity was to increase
functional information and skill about the activity market and it has been an
encounter brimming with learning and information. They gave me a very prestigious
opportunity of working with them. Overall, it was a very good experience because I
got knowledge how practically things are implemented.
Working as an intern has the connotation of doing the “dirty work” in the office.
You know getting coffee, answering phone calls, filing paperwork for days. Simply
put, you don’t always get the experience that will further your career. However,
there are internships out there that give you more to manage than the bottom of the
trough. Lucky for me - I got the chance to land one of these opportunities.
As I mentioned, not every intern learns about “the job” in front of them. Instead,
you just get to see the work environment. From my own experience, I was fully
invested in “the job” - learning everything I needed to know within a real work
environment. Outside of assigned projects, there were plenty of tedious tasks during
my internship. However, these tasks gave me an appreciation for the importance of
details - especially seeing how these tasks apply to a real-world company.
Ultimately, this was an eye-opening experience on many levels. I feel like I have a
head start on being a successful employee in my field by learning these real-world
skills. From start to finish, I was given resources to build my portfolio for the future.
Clearly, this isn’t something everyone can say after an internship.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
As a part of my degree, I was tasked with performing community work. For this purpose, I
decided to work with DR. AKHTAR HAMEED KHAN MEMORIAL TRUST – an
organization that had been working in sanitation, solid waste management and the technical
support in building up the plants with regards to the soft components all the other technical
aspects of a project at hand. It was established to spread out community development
philosophy of renowned and legendary social scientist, Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan. Upon
witnessing their progress, I got to know about their dedication to society and the way they
have always worked hard to make the affected areas a better place to live for everyone.
Henceforth, this project report is going to cover all the details of the NGO and the kind of
community work performed, learning aspects of the project and then conclusion &
recommendations as well.
1
1.1 Introduction:
Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan Memorial Trust is a non-profit organization (NGO) working on
sanitation and solid waste management in areas where the primary waste collection system
does not exist because of lack of resources. AHKMT was registered in February 2000 under
Trust Act 1882, to spread out development philosophy of renowned and legendary social
scientist, Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan (late). The organization works with community
contribution which ensures the sustainability of the initiatives undertaken. Before
undertaking any project, the organization undertakes a survey of the area and develops a
map to get an idea of the resources that will be utilized. Strong community mobilization
efforts of AHKMT ensure success of the project. The organization also conducts open
forums in which all the relevant stake holders are invited to participate. The feedback from
the participants helps in identifying the gaps that need to be addressed immediately. The
organization then develops plan for the area accordingly. AHKMT is working on 03
different programs of sanitation, solid waste management and shelter. Under Sanitation
Street Maps are developed and sewerage lines are laid down. Under solid waste
management program, the e-guard community manages their household waste on a self-
help basis. All line departments are mobilized to facilitate the community. At present
AHKMT is working in six cities of Pakistan namely Muzaffarabad, Mingora, Mansehra,
Sialkot, Rawalpindi and Gilgit.
Poor situation of sanitation makes the life of residents more miserable they are going to be
poorest. The sanitation facilities are available to only about 42% of the total population of
155 million including 65% in urban areas and 30% in rural settlements with the expectation
of few big city’s sewerage is almost nonexistent causing serious public health problems.
Solid waste generation in Pakistan ranges between 0.283 to 0.612 kg/capita/day and the
waste generation growth rate is 2.4% per year. Solid domestic waste is typically dumped on
low-lying land. This land could be used for more productive purposes and potentially
valuable recyclable materials are lost. Changing lifestyles, the increasing use of disposable
materials and excessive packaging are all contributing to an increase in the amount of waste
being created. Waste management is now a global issue. The problems associated with
Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management are complex because of the quantity and
2
diversity of the nature of waste and financial limitations on public waste collection services
in large cities. The problem is not only confined to land, it includes air and water as well.
Solid domestic waste is typically in dumped low-lying areas where it is burnt to reduce its
volume and lengthen the life span of the dumpsite. However, refuse does not burn well and
smoldering dumps produce clouds of smoke that can be seen from miles away, smell bad,
and create a breeding ground for flies and rats. The result is unsightly and unhygienic
conditions. This land could be used for more productive purposes and potentially valuable
recyclable materials are lost. Even citizens are not aware of the relationship between ways
of disposing of waste and the resulting environmental and public health problems.
1.2 Vision:
Engender readily available services of community driven total sanitation to all residents of
Rawalpindi, services of sanitation to meet their personal, social, cultural, and economical
needs.
1.3 Mission:
The people living in marginalized areas have access to modern sanitation and hygiene
facilities.
1.4 Visit:
Day 1
On Day 1, we visited the main branch of Dr. Akhtar Hameed Trust and met their officials.
They gave us an introduction about their trust that how it is formed and what facilities they
provide. It is a non-profit organization (NGO). Their work is basically related to sanitation
and solid waste management. The organization works with the contribution of community
and ensures the sustainability of initiatives undertaken. This organization is working on
three different programs that are sanitation, solid waste management and shelter.
Under Sanitation Street maps are developed and sewerage lines are laid down.
Under solid waste management program the e-guard community manages their
household waste on self-help basis.
3
The dramatic increase in world’s population has been one of the main reasons for
shelter problem. Increased population is causing poverty, which is a main hurdle.
Day 2
On Day 2, we visited their plant and were briefed about the whole process as they had
developed a model for solid waste management known as "e-guard model". This model
mainly focus on the primary collection of the waste from selected household in every
particular area.
First the waste is segregated recyclable materials are put in different bags hanging with the
collection carts. And the remaining waste is disposed off. After segregation the recyclable
materials are sold by E-guard collector but some biodegradable waste of nearby household
is hand over to Haryali Center where Compost is produced from this waste. The waste is
mainly divided into 2 main categories, organic and inorganic. Organic waste called green
waste mostly coming from kitchen waste such as peel and remaining of vegetables and food
etc. The other form was inorganic containing glass, pieces of iron, paper, etc.
First time “Haryali center” was established near to Potohar TMA Rawalpindi where
Biodegradable waste composed of; Kitchen Waste containing fruits and vegetables peals
and Garden Waste consist of Grass cuttings, Leaves, twigs, and branches) is segregated for
composting processes. The compost is then sold out to the forms nursery and farmers for
vegetables and crops growing instead of using chemical fertilizers.
So, we have seen the whole process at haryali center that how kitchen waste is used for
growing fruits and vegetables. We have also seen different animals like hens as they were
being fed by the rice collected from houses.
Day 3
On Day 3, we visited a plant where they recycle plastic waste. This plant works in different
steps as sorting is done first and it is carried out manually to ensure all contaminants have
been removed. Once sorted and cleaned, plastic is then shredded into flakes or melt
processed to form pellets before making a new product.
4
At the end we observe e-guard model as self-sustained and follow the 3Rs approach (reuse,
reduce and recycle). Services can be improved through a participatory approach. This
approach has a positive aspect of neat and clean environment and also provide income
opportunities for the unprivileged people of the society.
The Akhter Hameed Khan Memorial Trust (AHKMT) had previously implemented the e-
guard model for solid waste management in five cities across Pakistan, with funding from
U-N habitat. This project primarily focused on collecting waste from selected households in
specific areas. Trained e-guard collectors or sanitary workers collected domestic waste
directly from households and performed on-the-spot segregation. They sorted non-
biodegradable recyclable waste into various bags on collection carts, each designated for
different recyclable materials. The remaining waste was disposed of at nearby disposal
points managed by municipal authorities like the Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB).
After segregation, e-guard collectors sold recyclable materials. Some biodegradable waste
from nearby households was sent to the Haryali Center. Initially located near the housing
society Potohar town area in Rawalpindi, the Haryali Center specialized in composting
biodegradable waste, including kitchen waste (food scraps, peels, tea bags, eggshells) and
garden waste (grass cuttings, leaves, twigs, branches). The first Haryali Center occupied
approximately 16 kanals of land, but its land area was eventually reduced to 20 Marla’s as
experience grew. This center served about 1000 households and employed Effective
Microorganisms (EM) technology for composting, producing natural compost ready for use
in just 15 days.
5
approximately one thousand members in this society who collect waste from homes
throughout the entire community, gathering approximately 600 tons of waste daily.
The Buraq company collects plastic bottles that contain beverages like Pepsi or others.
There are white-colored bottles and green-colored ones. They sort and separate the white
and green bottles. Then, they put them into a machine and cut them into small pieces,
creating tiny plastic fragments. These fragments are washed and then placed into drums
containing chemicals. Chemicals are applied, and this process transforms plastic. These
plastic pieces may either be used for making new bottles or for various purposes, such as in
clothing or stuffing for sofas. The Buraq company also does this, or they take waste
materials such as onion peels, fruit peels, and other things. They turn them into fertilizer for
plants so that plants can grow well and produce fresh fruits and vegetables. They extract all
these things from the trash and then make fertilizer out of them, placing it on one side of the
site. The boxes that are found in the trash, often referred to as cardboard, are used to make
furniture. This benefits the team members as they can utilize various items for their own
benefit. For example, leftover bread is given to animals, like cows, which produce milk,
and chickens lay eggs. The company also generates gas and petrol from the waste, which
is advantageous.

Accordingly, the Riphah International University being one of the leading sustainable
organization consistently contribute to the global sustainability through various initiatives.
Faculty of Management Scinces (FMS), Riphah School of Leadership (RSL) takes an
initiative to contribute to SDGs targets achievement through complusary community work
(20 hours) done by undergraduate students. The students need to align their community
work with SDGs especially focusing on following six SDGs out of seventeen SDGs:
SDG-1 (No Poverty) can be achieved through creating awareness about vocational training
and small business in the least developed areas.. Nesting education to alleviate poverty
should be the slogan in awareness.
SDG-2 (Zero Hunger), can be achieved by creating awareness through a campaign in
restaurants to not waste food.
SDG-3 (Good Health and Well-Being) can be achieved by ensuring healthy lives and
promoting the well-being of all ages is essential to sustainable development.
SDG-4 (Quality of Education) can be achieved through awareness in the least developed
areas and help them to get an education and alleviate poverty.
SDG-5 (Gender Equality) can be achieved through aware females and transgender about
their rights rules and regulations that are permitted by law. Similarly,
SDG-13 (Climate Action) can be achieved through awareness about consumption control of
Natural Resources and plantation of trees.
However, it is well known that achieving such goals independently is not possible for the
student. Thus, FMS-RSL takes an initiative to align students’ community work with these
SDGs to contribute to sustainability as follows:
a) The students are encouraged to search for such organizations, NGOs, or intuitions that are
somehow contributing to these SDGs.
b) students have to work there for 20 hours voluntarily to conduct awareness sessions and
provide the necessary training (e.g., lectures) to help underprivileged people by all possible
means.
c) Students have to submit a community work report which need to be aligned with selected
SDGs under the supervision of allocated faculty member.

1.11 Conclusion:
My Experience with Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan Memorial Trust was an amazing one. It has
given me immense pleasure that I became a helping hand for them. The things I got to learn
there were Planning, Organizing, Leading, Controlling, Social Entrepreneurship and Work
Ethics. Not only this but I got to see happiness in the eyes of all those people who have
benefited hugely by various projects of the NGO. All of them gave us their warmest regards
and wished us many blessings and hence, I was very glad to be a part of their team.
1.12 Recommendations:
The NGO should expand their horizons and take social work to even more cities apart from
Rawalpindi/Islamabad.
The Management should focus more on Networking to engage more & more people who
wish to contribute to social works to help the deprived society.
The NGO should focus on capacity building as well by offering free skills training to the
youngsters who want to make a career in freelancing.
The NGO should also focus on their Resource Mobilization by organizing fundraising
events which would spread awareness regarding their feats over the years and also
encourage the people to participate and help them as well.
