    Performance Task 1

    Earthquakes: Understanding Why They Happen and What


    Follows

    (Introduction)
    An earthquake is the shaking of the earth's surface produced by
    a sudden release of energy within the crust. This release of
    energy generates seismic waves, also known as S waves. The
    intensity and characteristics of an earthquake are determined by
    seismic activity in a specific region.

    (Body)
    Earthquakes happen when pieces of the Earth's outer shell, called
    tectonic plates, suddenly move. These plates are always slowly
    shifting on a semi-fluid layer beneath them. When two plates
    meet, they create different types of boundaries. The strongest
    and most destructive earthquakes usually occur at convergent
    boundaries, where two plates collide or slide past each other.
    Apart from tectonic activities, earthquakes can also be triggered
    by other geological events. For instance, when magma in
    volcanoes moves up through the Earth's crust, it builds pressure
    and breaks the rocks near the volcano, causing earthquakes. The
    vibrations from these movements and fractures then spread in all
    directions, shaking the ground.
    One of the effects of earthquakes is ground shaking, when there's
    an earthquake, the energy released makes the ground shake.
    How much it shakes depends on the earthquake's size, how far
    you are from where it started, and the kind of ground you're on.
    Another effect is tsunamis, underwater earthquakes near plate
    boundaries can cause tsunamis—giant waves that travel a long
    way and flood coastal areas, bringing significant danger to
    communities with the potential for widespread damage and loss
    of lives. Lastly, earthquakes can trigger landslides and avalanches
    in areas with steep slopes or unstable terrain and also do damage
    to buildings, bridges, roads, and other man-made structures
    because the shaking leads to structural failure, collapse, and
    extensive damage, especially if the buildings are not designed or
    constructed to withstand seismic activity.

    (Conclusion)
    In summary, knowing what earthquakes can do helps us prepare
    better and respond effectively. Keep in mind that the impact of
    earthquakes varies based on factors like the earthquake itself,
    where it happens, and how ready the communities are.
