PHILIPPINE LENT

Lent in the Philippines, especially the Holy Week is

one of the unique observances in Christendom. History
shows that the initiation of Lent was implanted by the
Spaniards for extending the limits of the Spanish empire and
for spreading the Catholic faith.

Our Philippine Lenten customs and rituals consist of

the Penitensya, Pabasa, Bisita Iglesiya, Senakulo, Siyete
Palabras, Salubong and Linggo ng pagkabuhay.

Calling themselves as flagellants or penitents, these

men and women have vowed to undertake annual
flagellation to cleanse themselves of sins against God and
fellowmen. Garbed in black and covered in masks, they walk
around the streets flogging themselves with a stick and
uttering prayers.

The second is the Pabasa or the reading of the passion

of Christ, done in a sing-song chant, lasting for 24 hours.
Holding a Pabasa has something to do with a vow a person
made during Holy Week or to give thanks for a blessing
received.

The Bisita Iglesia is observed in which the devotees

make trips to various churches to undertake the stations of
the Cross.

The Senakulo is a stage dramatization of the Pabasa.

It highlights the passion and crucifixion of Christ.

At noontime of Good Friday, the faithful crowd the

churches to hear the Siyete Palabras or Sermons on the
Seven Last Words. It usually touches on man’s temporal and
spiritual relations.

The Salubong is a religious procession which

celebrates Easter Sunday. A carriage carrying the life-size
image of the Virgin Mary is one feature of the procession.

After reading the passage, give the students questions to
