. After completing the reading/video assignments for this week, write two things
1
you have noticed about the communication style of yourself and people you work
with, especially your supervisor.
In communicating with my colleagues and supervisor, I have learned that my
colleagues and I have slightly different types of communication styles. My supervisor is
less direct than I am. He likes to give me broad ideas and random things and I have
inferred what he wants me to do with them. Often how I perceive what he means and
what he thinks he is saying are different things.
omething that I have noticed is that all of my colleagues leave lots of silences in
S
conversations which I find sometimes unnerving. They pause in the middle of ideas
and sentences, whereas I will always speak through my whole idea. We actually all
talked about this in the first week I was here because they said that I am really good
with small talk and I responded by saying that I don’t like standing with someone in
silence and I always feel the need to be interacting. They are not used to that and so all
found it very interesting how we all approach silences differently.
I think that both of us like to have more details rather than less. Every Tuesday and
Thursday morning, all my coworkers and I have a “to do” meeting, where we go over
our tasks for the next two days. And my supervisors always ask for so much detail and
information on each task. I think that it is because it allows us to feel more organized
and we will be more productive. So I think that we all like to have details and a clear
understanding of what is going on because we will all benefit from it.
It is always fascinating to me to observe how people and myself communicate with
each other. I always wonder why we communicate the way we do. What are some of
the reasons that could contribute to the different communication styles? Does how
people view relationships/self influence the way we communicate?
I would say something that greatly impacts the way that we communicate is cultural
background. Different cultures have distinct communication norms and styles. Some
cultures may emphasize direct communication, while others may prefer indirect or
implicit communication. But even further than that, I think that family upbringing and
the way that someone is raised is just as impactful. I speak and communicate
differently with people who I went to high school with even though we came from the
same culture and neighborhood. I can attribute this to the way that my parents and
family talk and how I have picked that up from them and how it really influences the
way that I prefer to communicate and talk.
. Congratulations! Now you are about halfway through your internship. This
2
week I want you to get ready for a meeting with your supervisor by following the
steps below. Please keep in mind the communication style of your supervisor
when approaching them.
In my meeting with my supervisor this week, we talked about what I have completed
on my project, what I am working on now, and where I will go next. This check in was
helpful because it helped to get both of us on the same page in relation to my project. I
learned that I was meeting his expectations and getting very far on the project and that
he really appreciated my positive attitude and anger that I brought to the office.
e talked about how we would both like to have a better and more clear idea of the
W
next part of my project. The first phase was research and so I was able to do it all by
myself, which he said he appreciated all of my autonomy in completing the research.
The next part of the development of the actual project, this is a part where we both
have to work together. So we talked about how we can do meetings more frequently so
that we do not waste time and can efficiently finish the project. We worked to create a
timeline/gantt chart for the rest of the project so we both know what I will be working
on and when. We both agreed that this would help to be more efficient so that I can get
the most out of the rest of the internship.
