INTRODUCTION

A. Background Information

Peer pressure among top students refers to the influence that peers have on the
behavior and decision-making of high achieving students. These students are often seen as
role models and leaders in their schools and communities, and as such, their actions and
choices can have a significant impact on their peers.

Peer pressure can manifest in various ways among top students. For example,
students may feel pressured to conform to a particular academic or extracurricular standard
set by their peers. This can lead to students taking on a heavy workload or participating in
activities that they may not necessarily be interested in, but feel compelled to do so in order to
fit in or maintain their status as high achievers.

Additionally, peer pressure can also influence social behavior and decision-making
among top students. Students may feel pressure to conform to certain social norms or
engage in risky behaviors in order to be accepted by their peers. This can include anything
from experimenting with drugs or alcohol to engaging in risky sexual behavior.

Overall, peer pressure among top students can have both positive and negative
effects. While it can encourage students to push themselves academically and achieve great
things, it can also lead to stress, burnout, and unhealthy behaviors if not managed properly.

D. Review of Related Literature

According to the national library of medicine there is a wealth of literature available

on the topic of peer pressure among high-achieving students. Numerous studies have
examined the impact of peer pressure on academic performance, mental health, and overall
well-being. Some researchers have discovered that top-performing students are more
vulnerable to peer pressure than their lower-performing peers. Furthermore, peer pressure
can result in stress, anxiety, and burnout among high-achieving students. However, peer
pressure can also have positive effects, such as motivation and support from peers. It is
critical for high-achieving students to be aware of the potential negative consequences of
peer pressure and to seek assistance if they are struggling.

High-achieving students are often viewed as exemplary models or the best of the
best in their academic institutions. They are expected to excel in their studies, participate in
extracurricular activities, and maintain a healthy social life. However, this can place a
significant amount of stress on these students, particularly when they are surrounded by their
highly motivated peers. Peer pressure among high-achieving students is a prevalent issue in
academic environments that is frequently ignored by educators and parents.

Peer pressure among high-achieving students can take on various forms. One of
the most apparent ways is through academic competition, where students feel the need to
outperform their peers and secure a top spot in the class. This can create a stressful and
highly competitive environment, where students are more concerned with beating their peers
than with learning for the sake of knowledge retention. Additionally, peer pressure can also
manifest in non-academic settings, such as social events and extracurricular activities. In
these scenarios, high-achieving students may feel pressured to participate in activities that
may conflict with their existing obligations or values. They may feel the need to maintain
social status or impress their peers, even if it means sacrificing their time or mental health.

One of the most concerning effects of peer pressure on high performing students is
the risk of burnout. The intense pressure to succeed can cause students to overwork
themselves, which can lead to fatigue and a decline in academic performance. This is
compounded by social pressure to constantly compete and outperform their peers. Burnout
can manifest physically, mentally, and emotionally, and can have long-lasting effects on a
student's academic performance and overall health. Most notably, when students are pushed
to their limits, they may mistakenly think they are the only ones struggling to catch up, which
can lead to feelings of isolation.
BODY

Does Peer pressure only affect students negatively or it also has the capability to
affect them otherwise?

Climate of opinion are mostly felt in schools because this is one of the places of
socializing with different types of individuals.

According to https://www.nationalreview.com, peer pressure are commonly felt at

the age of 15 and adolescents may begin to be more capable of building boudaries against
society at 18 years of age. In agreement with K Deepeka, N Prema (International Journal of
Environmental and Science Education 12 (8), 1931-1943, 2017), the piece itself revealed
peer pressure plays a huge impact on decreasing academic triumphs of a student; From the
same source, an observation was held from 7456 number of students; From classes VI to XII,
there were 145 Deviant students taken as sample (2% of the school). The investigation
showed the negative link between peer pressure and academic progress which basically
concludes that peer pressure is one of the hindrances a youngster might face in his journey to
obtain success. Also, the study dictates that the performance of a student can be affected on
what kind of surrounding he/she has.

On the other hand, Peer pressure itself can be a source of productivity if a person
will take it that way. In accordance with International Journal of Scientific and Research
Publications 9 (1), 300-312, 2019; a survey was held among Senior High School students;
using a chi-square, a Quantitative Data was produced among the 96 respondents who
finished the experiment. Through the survey that had been conducted, it is revealed that in
order for the students to face the dark effects of peer influence in academics, they are
expected to be positive-minded in terms of coping with it. In other words, Peer pressure is
dealt on either a positive way or otherwise.

Also, the outcomes of this social act is based on what kind of system or mindset
will an individual use. Guardians such as parents, relatives or even friends and teachers will
serve as a big help in building positive systems that will became sheds and source of advices
to those who are affected by this issue. What might happen if you're not able to escape the
negative world of Peer pressure?
Peer pressure does not only affect an individual socially but also mentally,
physically and psychologically. In accordance with https://www.veeywellfamily.com, Peer
pressure leads a person to depression and anxiety because the constant pressure being
provided by negative people triggers that person to feel worst about his/herself that triggers
him/her to cut ties with his/her loved ones; Peer influence distracts a person to his/her studies
since with that constant negative energy a person carries, he/she will feel troubled in regards
of creating the correct momentum in reaching his/her academic triumphs;

Social pressure also lead people to perform dark activities such as unsafe sexual
doings, being involved in alcoholic drinking and being into drugs; In addition, Peer pressure
builds a big effect on someone's self-esteem, since if a person is busy thinking about other
people's point of view about him/her... he/she will never have the means to appreciate what
he/she has or what he/she is capable of.

How can you tell if you're in the right group of friends?

Friends are peers who create a huge impact on how an individual act towards life situations.
A circle of friends is the main influence on how a person view things in this world. Being with
the appropriate people in a daily basis creates a positive system in handling situations a
person is facing and about to face.

In https://www.verywellfamily.com, it is stated that in order for a person to make a

positive outcome, he/she must surround his/herself with: people who pushes him/her to get
better grades, people who give his/her life directions such as getting a job, people will
convince him/her to save for his/her future and people who disagree within appropriate jokes
and conversations. From the same source, a person must not be friends with: people who
influence him/her to skip classes, people who convince him/her to get into fight, people who
are involved in malicious activities and people who are into gambling, smoking and drugs etc.
CONCLUSION

As stated from above, this study aims to examine how negatively or positively peer
pressure can affect young people's values, habits, principles, and behaviours toward their
academic performance in school. Thus, to analyze the influence and identify how can
students cope certain life situations and peer pressure negative hard core struggles that have
inflicted to them.

Peer pressure refers to influence exerted by peers to individuals that impacts to

their behaviours, habits, values, etc. In accordance to Ntipase Masunyane and Mosioa Make
betlane perspectives and coping mechanisms, these are the mentioned strategies to navigate
peer pressure situations: Firstly, building self confidence. Creating a strong sense of self
confidence or self esteem can help individuals manageably resist negative pressure by peers.

making and question societal norms can empower and encourages them to make
independent choices. And by evaluating the effects and consequences of the students action,
students can fortunately identify the action they are risking and abduptly adapt and change.

In a quote of Elon Musk, "Some people don't like change, but you need to embrace
change if the alternative is disaster." Being with peers or friends is such a comfort, but if it
influences in a negative way it is a cue to assert and change your habit mechanisms to
perform better. Peer pressure is inevitable, either can be positive or negative depending on
what peers a student have. If it is bad, it will get the student into nasty situation and can affect
their school performances in a not good favorable outcome. On the other hand, students who
have positive and productive peers are most highly to get good grades. To add sum, it
influence students to mainly promote and improves one's grades and performance in school.
