The Impact of Self-Esteem on the Academic Performance of Grade 11 Students in Meycauayan

National High School.

Chapter I

Introduction

According to Bunders et al. (2019), adolescence is one of the most rapid phases of human

development. It is characterized by rapid physical, social and cognitive growth as well as changes in self-

esteem stated. Self-esteem has a significant importance on a student’s life outcome, including social aspects

and their health. In students, there is a clear connection between a positive outcome and high self-

confidence, such as getting good grades, having a certificate, or having better social relationships. On the

other hand, having low self-confidence or having a few insecurities is observed to be negatively affecting

the behaviour of students, as well as their relationships. There is also a connection between low self-

confidence and insecurities to a student’s negative outcome. Such as early sexual activity, substance abuse

(drugs, alcohol, etc.), and lifestyle problems. Their study also indicates that extensive research explored risk

and protective factors related to low self-confidence among a student. Reported factors include being a girl,

their family having a low social status, family eligibility for public assistance, school performances, and

grades as well as their body figure. Having low self-confidence may also lead to mental health issues like

depression and may also lead to suicide.

Academic performance is a process in the education of students that involves activities that allow

them to gain and enhance their knowledge regarding various topics. It is a crucial activity that leads to the

academic success of learners, with the evaluation of their academic performance being a reference for future

pursuits, such as careers. According to a study by Honicke and Broadbent (2015), the academic

performances of students are affected by a concept called "academic self-efficacy." This concept talks about

the belief and attitude of the student that they can succeed affects their performances in academics.

Considering how high the standards are set for students nowadays, it is no mystery that only a few students

are observed to be possessing this attitude in dealing with their academic activities. A student's academic
performance is often evaluated based on their grades, test scores, and other academic measures. With that

said, is pointed out in another study by Alwagait et al. (2015) that numerous factors affect the academic

performance of students. Having high academic performance indicates that a student has a good

understanding of the subject matter, excellent study habits, and a strong work ethic. In contrast, poor

academic performance may suggest that a student needs additional support, such as tutoring or academic

counselling, to help them improve their performance and achieve their educational goals. With that said,

these factors will allow us to achieve a deeper understanding of the factors affecting the academic

performances of students, as well as what the best course of action is regarding this situation in the sense of

finding the perfect balance of having a high and low balance in one's academic performance.

One would identify that self-esteem and academic performance are affected by each other in some

cases. According to a study by Suarez (2021), self-esteem and academic achievement have both a positive

and negative relationship with each other. It was found in the study that students with high self-esteem tend

to perform better academically compared to those with low self-esteem. They deduced that individuals with

high self-esteem have more confidence in their abilities, thus, are more likely to accomplish academic tasks

without struggle. Moreover, the study suggests that individuals with high self-esteem have better stress

management skills, which can positively impact academic performance. This could mean that the self-

esteem of students gives off a positive effect on their academic performance. Students are less likely to feel

overwhelmed by stress and are better equipped to handle academic pressure if they have high self-esteem.

On the other hand, students with low self-esteem finds it hard to accomplish tasks. And occasionally they

might even get shy due to the insecurities that they may have. This may result to unpleasable outcomes and

stress upon the students. So, adding to our previous inquiry, the factors that affect the self-esteem and

academic performance of students, which also cause them to have low self-esteem and a dissatisfactory

performance in their academic activities, is still questionable thus needs further research.

This study will be beneficial to students, parents, and school administrators. This study will help

them know that self-esteem has an impact in the students’ academic performance and may encourage them
to help the students gain more confidence. Through this study, the benefactors would be able to gain a much

more deeper understanding of these kinds of behaviour and act accordingly to improve the mental state and

well-being of students.

Significance of the Study

The researchers would intend to determine the impact of self-esteem on the academic performance of Grade

11 students in Meycauayan National High School. The information obtained in this study would be

beneficial to the following:

 Students

This study will help students be more cautious about the students’ mental and emotional health. This

research would allow them to find a solution in dealing with their low self-esteem and lack of self-

confidence. The researchers will deal with the students’ insecurities and self-esteem issues that are rarely

talked about. Bringing awareness to students regarding these issues would allow them to be more

comfortable with themselves, and even guide them in possessing a higher level of self-confidence. Raising

their knowledge and making them aware would also help lessen the rates of underperforming students and

increasing the possibility of students gaining confidence through the help of others.

 Teachers

This study will benefit teachers for it would help them identify students struggling with low self-

esteem and act with necessary support and other measures that would improve their students’ self-esteem

and academic performance. They will be more attentive to students and be more mindful of their emotions

and well-being. This study also helps to come up with teaching strategies that involves the improvements

and validations of the students’ self-esteem and mental being. This will equip them to identify possible

reasons that causes stress to students which will allow them to formulate solutions to solve the problem.
 Parents

This study can benefit parents by allowing them to be aware and knowledgeable about the potential issues

with their child’s self-esteem and confidence. This study will give them enough information to know how to

interact with their children and provide support and guidance to help their child build a positive self-image.

This study will help parents learn how to communicate with their children about this issue clearly and

comfortably to provide them a safe and secured company.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The general intent of this study is to determine the impact of self-esteem on the academic performance of

Grade 11 Students in Meycauayan National High School. Twenty (20) Grade 11 Students will serve as the

participants of the study.

This study will focus on the investigation of the impact of self-esteem on the academic performance of

Grade 11 students. The study will be conducted within the current academic year and will not cover the

possible long term-effects of self-esteem on the academic performance of students. This study will be

conducted through the use of surveys, interviews, and focus groups to collect data.

HUMSS students will be the respondents of this study because the researchers would have easier access to

information and will have better understanding of the topic since the researchers and the respondents are in

the same age group. For this reason, the respondents would be able to comfortably interact with the

researchers, which would make data gathering easier.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the impact of self-esteem on the academic performance of Grade 11

students in Meycuayan National Highschool during the second semester of the School Year 2022-2023.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the impact/effects of self-esteem the academic performance of students?

2. To what extent does low self-esteem contribute to poor academic performance among Grade 11

students in Meycuayan National Highschool?

3. What Strategies can be implemented to boost the self-esteem of Grade 11 students and improve their

academic performance?

Research Assumption

The researchers assumed that there is a significant positive relationship between self-esteem and

academic performance among Grade 11 students in Meycuayan National Highschool. Specifically, students

who have higher levels of self-esteem are expected to perform better academically compared to those with

lower self-esteem. They also assumed that everyone would benefit from this study because they will show

the advantages and disadvantages of their research.
