I. Objectives
1. Define assertion.
2. Choose correct reaction from the given situations.
3. Write a reaction based on the author’s assertion.
B. Initiatory Activity
Would You Rather…?
There will be two choices. All you have to do is to clap once to your right side if
your choice is the first one, and clap twice on your left side if your choice is the
second one.
Would you rather…
1. have 10 billion in your bank account or an IQ of 145+?
2. have a month without your phone or a month without the internet?
3. do schoolwork as a group or by yourself?
4. be good at math or really good at sports?
5. meet your favorite celebrity or be on a TV show?
Through this activity, students will be able to choose with a strong belief in their own
choices. Whatever their choices are, no one can contest to that. Those are their own
belief. You believe that your choices are true for yourself.
C. Lesson Proper
Assertion is a stylistic approach or technique involving a strong declaration
confidently regarding a belief or a fact. Often, it is without proof or any support. Its
purpose is to express ideas or feelings directly.
Examples:
The saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is an example of an
assertion. Many people are declaring, affirming or assuming it to be true but it
can’t be proven.
Another example of assertion would be “Men are stronger than women.” Some
may have a strong belief of it, but it can’t be proven true.
Assertions can be found in the different literature or texts. The function of
assertion is to let readers feel that they should not disagree with what they read or hear;
rather, they should accept the idea or notion as an unquestionable fact.
Assertion has proven to be one of the best approaches for writers to express their
personal feelings, beliefs, and ideas in a direct way.
D. Generalization
Answer the following questions:
1. Why is assertion important especially in literature?
2. How can you politely disagree with the assertions given by other people?

IV. Evaluation
Part I. Yay! or Nay!
Write Yay! if you agree with the assertion and Nay! if not. Then, write at least two
sentences reaction about it.
1. Pets should be allowed in school for several reasons. First, they help students
feel more comfortable. Some students feel very uncomfortable in a school setting
but taking along a pet gerbil or gecko might help students relax. Also, students
can make friends more easily with a pet. A pet frog or tarantula can gather quite
a crowd; and when students see what pets they have in common, they can unite
around their common interests. Finally, pets can keep students safe. Who wants
to bully a student who has a protective dog with him? For all of these reasons,
students should be allowed to take their pets to school.
2. The Filipino is like the bamboo tree. He knows that he is not strong enough, to
withstand the onslaught of superior forces. And so he yields. He bends his head
gracefully with many loud protestations. And he has survived. The Spaniards
came and dominated him for more than three hundred years. And, when the
Spaniards left, the Filipinos still stood—only much richer in experience and
culture. (Pliant Like a Bamboo)
3. The Filipino who travels abroad gets to thinking that he is the hardest working in
the world. By six or seven in the morning, he is already up and on the way to
work. The wheels of the industry are already grinding. (A Heritage of Smallness)
Part II. Read and React!
Read the information inside the box. React to what is asserted by completing the
statements.
