What’s In
Now is the time to move on to our next lesson which is How to carry out
measurements and calculations in performing simple household services.
We all know that measurement is one of the most important and widely used
applications of mathematics. Children must understand the importance of
measurement and be familiar with their use in everyday life. Parents can help
children see the relevance of measurement in the real world by pointing out it’s
applications in real life situations. Example situations are: time management,
preparation of food, taking medicines, sizes of furniture/space/area, and etc.

What is It
The MetricSystemis a measurement that uses the meter, liter, and gram as base
units of length (distance), capacity (volume), and weight (mass) respectively. To
measure smaller or larger quantities, we use units derived from the metric units.
These includes the following:
Length: Millimeter (mm), Decimeter (dm), Centimeter (cm), Meter (m), and
Kilometer (km) are used to measure how long, wide or tall of an object by using
ruler, yardstick and meter stick.
Examples: measuring the thickness or length of debit card, length of cloth, piece of
wood for furniture making.
Weight: Gram (g) and Kilogram(kg) are used to measure how heavy an object,
using instruments such as portion and weighing scale.
Examples: measuring weight of fruits or, our own body weight.
Capacity: Milliliter (ml) and Liter (l) are used to measure how much quantity of
liquid an object can hold through the use of measuring cup, glass or gallon.
Examples: measuring the amount of juice in a juice can, or amount of water in a
water tank.
Length: Inch (in), Foot (ft.), Yard (yd). Example: A man being six feet tall.
Area: Acre (acre or ac). Example: The house sits on two acres of land.
Volume: Pint (pt.), Quart (q.), Gallon (gal.) Example: The ice cream comes in
pint.
Weight: Ounce(oz.), Pound (lb), Tons (ton) Example: Manny Pacquiao weighs
145 pound (lb)

What I Have Learned
How it works: The olive oil/coconut oil nourishes and prevents the wood from
cracking, while the acid of vinegar cleans and lemon/calamansi adds citrus aroma.
Ask any adult family member to guide you and give you an honest score. Copy the
scoresheet in your notebook.
