Important terms of measurement.

1. To MEASURE means to give a particular number to a
particular characteristic of a person, an object, or a concept. When
measurements are made, they are expressed quantitatively as numbers.
2. The LENGTH is the term used for identifying the size of
an object by the distance from end to end or commonly referred to as the
longest dimension of an object.
3. MASS refers to the amount of matter an object has while
4. WEIGHT is the gravitational force acting on an object.
5. VOLUME is the amount of space an object occupies. In a
container, it is considered to be the capacity of the container.
6. TIME is the ongoing and continuous sequence of events
taking place in succession, from past to the present to the future.
7. ANGLE was derived from the Latin word angulus, which
means corner. It is a figure formed when two rays share a common endpoint
called the vertex.
8. TEMPERATURE is the measurement of the degree of
hotness or coldness of an object or a substance.
9. RATE is the ratio between two related quantities in
different units.
10. Palm – the width of one’s hand excluding the thumb
11. Handspan – the distance from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the little finger
of one’s hand with fingers spread apart
12. Forearm length – the length of one’s forearm; the distance from the elbow to
the tip of the middle finger.

REMEMBER:
 At around 3rd century BC in Egypy, people use their body parts to determine the measurement
of things.
 In 1800s, the English System of Measurement is widely used and later in 1900s, Metric System
of Measurement started to gain ground.
 The International System of Units (SI) has seven (7) base units comprised of: meter, second,
mole, candela, ampere, kelvin and kilogram.
 Accuracy of measurements depends on two factors: the skills of the person doing the
measurement and the precision of the measurement used in measuring.
 In estimating measurement, a person should consider the appropriate unit of measure for the
object.

CONVERSION OF MEASUREMENTS FROM ONE UNIT TO ANOTHER

Conversion of units is the conversion between different units of measurement for the same quantity,
typically through multiplicative conversion factors. Conversion Factor is a number used to change one
set of units to another, either by multiplying or dividing. This involves the English System
which is based on a non-universal way of measuring by means of human body parts or other instrument
and the Metric System which is based on a decimal system. The conversion could be from same system:
English System to English System or Metric System to Metric System. It could also be from English System
to Metric System and vice versa. The table of conversion is needed to convert one unit to another unit.
