a. unlock the meanings of unfamiliar words using context clues;
b. determine lines that use figures of speech; and
c. relate situations you encounter in your daily life’s experiences
to the idea that the poem implies.

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer

Our lesson for today is about holding on to your
dreams in the changing world by reading and
analyzing the message of the poem “Dreams
Deferred” by Langston Hughes.
As we get along to our lesson, you will learn the
ways that might help you in order to decode and get
the message of the poem.

I know for sure that you all are familiar with what a
poem is, and with that, will you define what a poem is,

Ma’am, poem is a piece of writing in which the words
are used to have an aesthetic effect and rhymes at the
end of every line.

Step 1. Read the poem.
 Read the poem at least twice or as much as

 Take note with immediate impression of the

could mean differently.
 Look for clues on how these words are used in
context (context clues)

paragraph, or passage that a reader can use to

V. ASSIGNMENT
In a one whole sheet of paper, write a short essay answering the question: “If you were the speaker in the
poem ‘Dreams Deferred’, would you pursue your dreams despite of difficulties? Why? Why not?” Be ready to
share your answer to the class.
