Key Terms
WATER CONTENT (𝒘)
It is the ratio of the weight of water to the weight of solids.
VOID RATIO (𝒆)
It is the ratio of the volume of void spaces to the volume of solids.
POROSITY (𝒏)
It is the ratio of the volume of voids to the total volume of soil.
DEGREE OF SATURATION (𝑺)
It is the ratio of the volume of water to the volume of voids.
RELATIVE DENSITY (𝑫𝒓 )
It is an index that quantifies the degree of packing between the loosest and densest
state of coarse-grained soils.
Key Terms
BULK UNIT WEIGHT (𝜸)
It is the weight density, that is, the weight of a soil per unit volume.
SATURATED UNIT WEIGHT (𝜸𝒔𝒂𝒕 )
It is the weight of a saturated soil per unit volume.
DRY UNIT WEIGHT (𝜸𝒅 )
It is the weight of a dry soil per unit volume.
EFFECTIVE UNIT WEIGHT (𝜸′)
It is the weight of a saturated soil submerged in water per unit volume.
SPECIFIC GRAVITY (𝑮𝒔 )
It is the ratio of the weight of the soil solids to that of weight of water of equal
volume.
Void ratio, e
It is the ratio of the volume of void space to the volume of solids of the soil mass. The void ratio is
usually expressed as a decimal quantity.
Specific Volume, 𝑽′
It is the volume of soil per unit volume of solids.
Porosity, 𝒏
It is the ratio of the volume of voids to the total volume. Porosity is usually expressed as a
percentage.
Degree of Saturation, 𝑺
It is the ratio, often expressed as a percentage, of the volume of water to the volume of voids.

It is the ratio, often expressed as a percentage, of the weight of water to the weight of solids.
Unit weight, 𝜸
It is the weight of a soil per unit volume. The terms bulk unit weight, moist unit weight, total unit
weight, and natural unit weight are also used to denote unit weight.
Dry unit weight, 𝛾𝑑
It is the weight of a soil solids per unit volume.
Density, 𝝆
It is the mass of a soil per unit volume.
