ELECTRIC CHARGES & FIELD-3

1. Two concentric metallic spherical shells of radii R and 2R are given charges Q1 and Q2 respectively. The surface
charge densities on the outer surface of the shells are equal. Determine the ratio Q1: Q2?

2. A) An infinitely long positively charged straight wire has a linear charge density λ cm-1. An electron is revolving
around the wire as its centre with a constant velocity in a circular plane ⊥ to the wire. Deduce the expression for
its K.E
B) Plot a graph of the K.E as a function of charge density 𝜆.

3. Two small identical electrical dipoles AB and CD, each of dipole moment ‘p’ are kept
at an angle of 1200 as shown in the fig. What is the resultant dipole moment of this
combination? If this system is subjected to electric field E directed along + X
direction, what will be the magnitude and direction of the torque acting on this?

4. A system of two charges qA = 2.5 x 10-7 C and qB = -2.5 x 10-7C located at points A = (0, 0, -15 cm) and B = (0,0 + 15
cm) respectively. Calculate the total charge and dipole moment of the system?

5. Two large, thin plates are parallel and close to each other. On their inner faces, the plates have surface charge
densities of opposite signs and of magnitude 17.0 x 10-22 C/m2. What is electric field strength E: (a) in the outer
region of the first plate, (b) in the outer region of the second plate, and (c) between the plates?

6. Consider a uniform electric field E = 3 x 103i NC-1. (a) What is the flux of the electric field through a square of 10 cm
on a side whose plane is parallel to the YZ plane? (b) What is the flux through the same square if the normal to its
plane makes a 600 angle with X-axis?

7. A point charge is placed at the centre of a closed Gaussian spherical surface of radius r. Electric flux passing
through the surface is 𝜙. How is the electric flux 𝜙 through the surface affected when the following changes are
made in turn: (i) The spherical surface is replaced by a cylindrical surface of the same radius? (ii) The point charge
is replaced by an electric dipole? Justify your answers in each case.

8. A point charge causes an electric flux of -1.0 x 103 Nm2 C-1 to pass through spherical surface of 10.0 cm radius
centred on the charge. (i) If the radius of the Gaussian surface were doubled, how much flux would pass through
the surface? (ii) What is the value of the point charge?
9. A hollow cylindrical box of length 1 m and area of cross-section 25 cm2 is placed in a three dimensional coordinate
system as shown in the fig. The electric field in the region is given by E = 50 xi, where E is in NC-1 and x is in meters.
Find (i) net flux through the cylinder. (ii) Charge enclosed by the cylinder.

10. The flux of electrostatic field through the closed spherical surface Sl is found to be four times that through the
closed spherical surface S (shown in the above fig). Find the magnitude of the charge Q. Given q1 = 1 µC, q2 =-2 µC,
and q3 = 9.84 µC.
11. Electric field in the given fig. is directed along + X direction and given by Ex = 5Ax + 2B,
where E is in NC-1 and x is in metre. Taking A = 10NC-1 m-1 and B = 5 NC-1, Calculate (i) the
electric flux through the cube. (ii) Net charge enclosed within the cube.

12. A particle of mass m and charge (-q) enters the region between the two
charged plates initially moving along X-axis with speed 𝑣𝑥 as shown in the fig.
The length of the each plate is L and uniform electric filed E is maintained
between the plates. Show that the vertical deflection of the particles at the far

13. A point charge + 10 µC is at a distance 5 cm directly above the centre of a square of side 10 cm
as shown in the fig. What is the magnitude of the electric flux through the square? ( Hint : Think
of the square as one face of a cube with edge 10 cm)

14. A uniform electric field E = Ex i N/C for x > 0 and E = -Ex i N/C for x < 0 are given. A right circular cylinder of length
𝑙 𝑐𝑚 and radius 𝑟 𝑐𝑚 has its centre at the origin and its axis along the x-axis. Find out the net outward flux. Using
Gauss’s law, write the expression for the net charge within the cylinder.

15. Three point charges are placed as shown in fig. (i) Find the electric flux through the surface S1 (ii) Find the flux
through the surface S2. (iii) What is the relation between charges q1, q2 and q3, if the electric flux through surface S2
is 8-times of that through S1?

16. The electric field components in fig given above are Ex = α x ½, Ey=Ez=0, in which α=800N/C. Calculate (a) the flux
through the cube, and (b) the charge within the cube. assume that a =0.1m

17. A uniformly charged conducting sphere of diameter 2.5 m has a surface charge density 100𝜇𝐶/𝑚2 . Calculate
(i) Charge on the sphere and (ii) Total electric flux passing through the sphere.

18. An electric field is uniform, and in the positive x direction for positive x and uniform with the same magnitude in
the negative x direction for negative x. It is given that

A right circular cylinder of length 20cm and radius 5cm has its centre at the origin and its axis along the x-axis so
that one face is at x=10cm and the other is at x=-10cm.
(a) What is the net outward flux through each flat face?
(b) What is the flux through the side of the cylinder?
(c) What is the net outward flux through the cylinder?
(d) What is the net charge inside the cylinder?
19. Sum of two point charges separated by a distance r in vacuum is Q. Establish a relation between the charges so
that the force between them is maximum.
