Red – R
Green – G
Yellow – Y
Violet – V

Understand: This is what you know.

 The tiles form a pattern.
 The colors are red, violet, green and yellow.

Plan: You can find the pattern and continue it.

Solve:
 Look for a color pattern in the columns from top to bottom.
You see a column of red, green, red beside a column of violet,
yellow, violet, yellow. This pattern repeats.

 Then look at the diagonal rows. What pattern do you see?

Choose the group of tiles that completes the pattern of the columns
and the pattern of the diagonals.

Describe the pattern, what figures will ____ ____
complete the pattern?

Rule/ describe: ______________

What figures will be next? ______________
2. The pattern on the right
can also be shown as
1, 3, 6, 10. What would
be the next two figures
and numbers?
___________ _________

Rule: _________________________________________________________________
Next figures: __________________________________________________________
Next numbers: ________________________________________________________

WHEN YOU ARE DONE, RAISE YOUR HAND TO SHOW THAT YOU ARE
READY FOR THE GROUP DISCUSSION.

Remember:
 A sequence is an ordered set.
The term in a sequence often are numbers.
 You can use patterns of designs to form number pattern.
 You can use a rule to describe the pattern.

Yellow Green Red Grey Red Yellow Yellow Yellow

Clue:
Use these colors to help you describe the pattern: Do it vertically.
First row: grey, yellow, grey, yellow
2nd row: red, green, red, green
3rd row: yellow, grey, yellow, grey
4th row: green, _____, green, red
5h row: _____, _____, grey, yellow
6th row: red, green, red, green
7th row: yellow, grey, yellow, grey.

READY FOR THE GROUP DISCUSSION.

LESSON 2 Learning Competency 72

Uses different strategies (looking for a pattern, working backwards) to solve for
the unknown in simple equations involving one or more operations in whole
numbers and fractions.
In the previous lesson, you have learned to find the next term in the
sequence. You have also learned how to describe a pattern and formulate the
rule.
In this lesson, you will learn to solve for the unknown in simple
equations.

Look at the pattern below. What is the missing number?

3.1 6.2 9.3 ______ 15.5

Mark cut a 14 dk board into 3 pieces.

The first piece is as long as the second and third pieces together. The third piece is
half as long as the second piece. How long is each piece?

The pattern is start with one, then add 3.1 repeatedly.

The missing number is 12.4
The length of each is 3.1 dm.

Here’s another example:

Find the next terms and look for the pattern

27, 9, 3, 7, ?, 1/9, 1/27, 1/81

The pattern is: Start with one and divide 3 repeated the missing terms are: 1 and 1/3.
Ex.
27 ÷ = 9 9÷3=3 3÷3=1 1 ÷ 3 = 1/3

Do this.
Find the pattern.

₱ 24.00 ₱ 35.00 ₱45.00 ₱55.00

WHEN YOU ARE DONE, RAISE YOUR HAND TO SHOW THAT YOU ARE
READY FOR THE GROUP DISCUSSION.

Let’s have another one

Solve for the unknown.

Example: 4 + _____ ÷ 3 = 4

To solve for the unknonwn, you have to work backward.

Let’s go back to the example.
4 + _____ ÷ 3 = 4 = 4+4=8

So, the unknown is 8.

4+8÷3=4

12 ÷ 3 = 4

Here’s another one.

1 x +_____ + 2 = 10 = 10 – 2 = 8

So, 1 x 8 + 2 = 10
8 + 2 = 10

Now, do these. Solve.

1. 3 x _____ + 1 = 10
2. 15 x 2 ÷ _____ = 3

WHEN YOU ARE DONE, RAISE YOUR HAND TO SHOW THAT YOU ARE
READY FOR THE GROUP DISCUSSION.

Let’s have another one.

12 ÷ ____ + 3 - 2 = 4

WHEN YOU ARE DONE, RAISE YOUR HAND TO SHOW THAT YOU ARE
READY FOR THE GROUP DISCUSSION.

Here’s another one

2 1 1
3/4 - _____ + 1/4 = 2/4 = - =
4 4 4

So, 3/4 – 1/4 + 1/4 = 2/4

Do these.

2/ 3 x _____ - 1/12 = 1/12

WHEN YOU ARE DONE, RAISE YOUR HAND TO SHOW THAT YOU ARE
READY FOR THE GROUP DISCUSSION.

REMEMBER:

 The unknown is solved by working backwards.

 You can use any of the operations +, - , x, ÷, to solve for the unknown.

Self-Test (Lesson – 2)

I. Solve the following.

1. 1/3 + _____ + 4 = 4 2/3

2. 3 x _____ + 4 = 10
3. 15 ÷ _____ + 20 = 25
4. 3 + _____ + 4 = 10
5. 21 ÷ _____ x 2 = 14
6. 4/5 - _____ + 1/5 = 3/ 5
7. 6/7 - _____ + 3/7 = 5/7
8. 8 + 4 + _____ - 3 = 14
WHEN YOU ARE DONE, RAISE YOUR HAND TO SHOW THAT YOU ARE
READY FOR THE GROUP DISCUSSION.

SUMMARY:
