The Jaw-Dropping

Effect of First Frame

Retention Your Ads Are
Missing
(+9 Frameworks to exploit)
Storytime:

One of my clients was getting $30 CAC, I

already brought it down to $60.

But then, one of the ads had $10 CAC.

It’s probably the cheapest ad I’ve ever

created.

Nothing was different in that ad except

one thing.

It had a relatable first-frame retention,

which told the story already.

Check the first frame in the next slide.

First-frame means thumbnails:

Why It Worked:
It told the story with the text and those pacifiers (which is
quite odd to have so many). Moms can relate to it. This
created curiosity for moms to watch further.
I figured that first-frame retention was
making a difference.

Now, I create ads focusing first frame, and

then hooks.

Experiments by Princeton researchers

even suggest that people can make
accurate judgments of others within 1/10
of a second.

If this is with people, then with ads, we

definitely don’t have time.

So, make sure you take advantage of the

first frame.

Here are 9 first-frame examples you can

steal to tell stories within a split second,
too.
Framework # 1: Extremely Shocking

Killing a wallet with a gun it’s telling a story

of killing an enemy you don’t want to miss.
Framework # 2 : Comparison

Showing a comparison of you vs the better you

with an emotion attached to it. This tells the
transformation story.
Framework # 3 : Growth Comparison

Similar to comparison, but this tells the story of

an ACTUAL growth transformation. People buy in
to the story.
Framework # 4 : Visual Vivid Pain

When you make the pain vivid, it calls out the

audience that wants to know more and learn
more.
Framework # 5 : Puffery (Exaggeration)

You slightly stretch the truth to make the viewer

get interested what you have to show and tell.
Framework # 6 : The Negative Imagery

The emoji and text did the most of the job

because you wanna know what pisses this
person off.
Framework # 7 : The Emotional Drama

Sadness is primary human emotion. It creatse a

sense of empathy or connection with the viewer,
which can make the brand more relatable and
human.
Framework # 8 : The Future Desire

The money gun and the box with so many gifts.

It tells the story and leans into the desire of the
audience.
Framework # 9 : The Awe Experiment

Experimentation in-real time makes viewers

in lean into it. Blindfolding makes you binge
the content.
Let’s all say goodbye to shitty ads.

Let’s make ads that are story-worthy

content.

Content that’s Un-skippable, Un-

scrollable, and Un-ignorable.

One key takeaway:

Use emotions in your ads which tells

the story.
