INFORMATION SHEET 3.1-1
Types of Lighting Fixtures and Switches

Learning Objective
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to
identify and explain the functions of the three main types of lighting
(ambient, accent, and task) and choose appropriate fixtures based on their
purpose and the desired atmosphere.
Introduction
With so many types of lighting available, it can be confusing when
developing a lighting system for any space. Let’s dive into the basic types of
lighting in architecture and which light fixtures will work best for your

purposes.

Types of Lighting
There are various aesthetic and atmospheric effects of lighting. Based on
this, there are 3 types of lighting: ambient, focal and feature.

1. Ambient Lighting

CSAT Electrical Installation and Date Developed: Document No.

QA Maintenance NC II March 6, 2024 Issued by:
SYSTEM Installing wiring devices of floor Developed by: Page 9 of
and wall mounted outlets, Iris Daphne S. Revision # 32
lighting fixtures/switches and Badoy
auxiliary 00
Ambient lighting is also called mood lighting or general lighting. It is a soft,
at times diffused lighting, and might mimic natural light. General lighting
may be natural or come from light fixtures.

 It is a gentle, relaxing type of lighting.

 Ambient lighting “bounces” off walls to illuminate the maximum space
possible.
 There is no glare or spotlight. It does not call attention to any specific
area.
 It is ideal for general activity or quiet conversation.

Good lighting fixtures for ambient lighting include chandeliers, LED

downlights, wall scones, traditional recessed fixtures, and table & floor
lamps.

2. Feature Lighting
Accent lighting creates visual interest and adds drama to a space. It is used
to spotlight sculptures, houseplants, paintings, bookcases, wall textures,
outdoor landscaping, and even drapery.

 It is a very concentrated light meant to draw the eye to a focal point.

 It needs at least three times as much light on a focal point as the
ambient lighting around it.
 Accent lighting for outdoor areas, including architecture and gardens,
is called outdoor accent lighting. This is especially popular during
holidays such as Christmas and Halloween.
 It is often used in historical buildings, art shows and museums.

Types of feature lighting include sconces, picture lights, track lights, outdoor
lighting, and under-cabinet lighting.

3. Focal Lighting
Focal Lighting helps you to perform specific tasks such as sewing, balancing
checkbooks, reading, writing, cooking, or gaming. Ideally, task lighting
should be free of glare and shadows, while still bright enough to prevent
eyestrain.

 It provides additional, focused light for tasks in a space that may

already have ambient or accent lighting.
 It helps you see smaller objects, or objects with a low contrast.
 Aids with accuracy in tasks.
 Task lighting often has a swing arm or flexible neck.

auxiliary 00
 Often, they are installed over or near a workspace, and are an

important part of commercial design.

Standard fixtures for task lighting include pendant lighting, recessed

fixtures, desk or portable lamps, and under-cabinet lighting.

Warm Lighting vs Cold Lighting

Warm or cold light can be a key differentiator in how your customers or

clients respond to the spaces you build. For instance, cool white lighting
may hold the pride of place when it comes to bathrooms, but it’s another
story entirely for, say, bedrooms.

Color temperature creates a difference between these two types of lighting.

While warm light emits a warm, cozy yellowish glow, cool lighting looks more
artificial and gives a blueish color.

The Kelvin scale is used to measure the degree of warm or cold light.
Generally, warm light is of a color temperature below 3300 degrees Kelven,
often with shades ranging from yellow to orange to red, or even a warm
white. Between 3500-degrees and 4000-degrees Kelvin, the light color tends
to white, and this is called neutral light.

It is important to highlight that there is no hard rule for the choice of color
temperature for different spaces. You can decide the type of lighting
depending on your unique needs, preferences, and spaces.

However, certain color temperatures are generally used in specific spaces.

For example, in kitchens, it is prudent to use cool lighting due to the need
for good visibility. On the other hand, in a living room, you might want
warm pendant lighting, to lend warmth and coziness to social moments
such as talking.

Types of Lighting Fixtures
Lighting fixtures play a crucial role in illuminating spaces effectively while
also contributing to the aesthetic appeal of a room. There are various types
of lighting fixtures designed to meet different needs and preferences. Here's
an overview of some common types:

1. Ceiling Fixtures
 Recessed Lighting. Discreetly installed in the ceiling, these
fixtures provide diffused, general ambient light. Ideal for kitchens,
bathrooms, and hallways.
 Surface Mounted Ceiling Lights. Mounted directly onto the
ceiling, these fixtures come in various styles and sizes, offering
both ambient and task lighting depending on the design.
 Chandeliers. Ornate hanging fixtures with multiple bulbs,
chandeliers add a touch of elegance and provide ample ambient
lighting for dining rooms and entryways.

2. Pendant Lights
Single-bulb fixtures suspended from the ceiling by a cord, chain, or rod.
Pendants offer focused lighting for kitchen islands, breakfast bars, or
task areas.

3. Wall Sconces
Mounted directly on walls, sconces provide ambient or task lighting
depending on the direction they face. They can be used for hallways,
bathrooms, or to create a warm ambiance.

4. Track Lighting
A system of electrified tracks with adjustable spotlights. Perfect for
highlighting artwork, shelves, or creating focused task lighting in
kitchens or workspaces.

5. Portable Lamps
Floor lamps and table lamps offer localized task or ambient lighting.
They come in various styles and can be easily moved for adjustable
illumination.

6. Outdoor Lighting
Post lights, wall lanterns, and spotlights specifically designed for
withstanding outdoor elements. Provide security lighting, illuminate
walkways, or highlight landscaping features.

Choosing the Right Fixture

Consider these factors when selecting a lighting fixture:

Purpose Is it for general, task, or accent lighting?

Location Where will it be installed (kitchen, living room, etc.)?
Style Match the fixture's design to your overall décor.
Light Output Choose the appropriate brightness for the intended
use.
Dimming Allows for adjusting light levels for ambiance
Capability

Conclusion
Understanding the different types of lighting – ambient, accent, and task – is
crucial for designing an effective and inviting space. Each serves a distinct
purpose: ambient creates a soft, overall glow, accent highlights specific
features, and task provides focused light for specific activities. By
considering factors like color temperature, fixture styles, and your space's
needs, you can create a lighting scheme that balances functionality with
aesthetics.

General Procedures
1. Planning and Preparation
 Identify the location. Decide where you want the new fixture or
switch to be placed. Consider existing wiring, furniture placement,
and the desired lighting effect.
 Gather the necessary tools and materials. You'll need a screwdriver
set, wire strippers, wire nuts, a voltage tester, the new fixture/switch,
and possibly a mounting bracket (depending on the fixture).
 Review instructions. Carefully read the manufacturer's instructions
for the specific fixture or switch you are installing. This will provide
crucial details on assembly, wiring configuration, and any special
requirements.

2. Turning Off the Power

 Locate the breaker. Find your main electrical panel and identify the
circuit breaker that controls the area where you'll be working.
Typically, each room or area has a dedicated circuit breaker.
 Turn off the breaker. Flip the appropriate breaker to the "Off"
position.
 Double-check with tester: Use a voltage tester to touch the wires in
the junction box where you'll be making connections. The tester
should not light up if the power is off.

3. Preparing the Junction Box

 New fixture installation. If you're installing a new fixture, you
may need to install a new junction box to accommodate the wiring
connections. Ensure the box is an appropriate size for the number
of wires and complies with local electrical codes.
 Switch replacement. For switch replacements, you'll be using the
existing junction box. Make sure there's enough space in the box

auxiliary 00
for the new switch and all the wire connections. If the box feels
overcrowded, consult an electrician about adding a larger box.

4. Wiring Connections
 Identify the wires. Carefully open the junction box and expose a
short section (about ¼ inch) of insulation from each wire using wire
strippers. Look for the following-colored wires:
o Hot: Typically black, this wire carries the electrical current.
o Neutral: Usually white, this wire completes the circuit.
o Ground: Often bare copper or green, this wire provides a path
for any stray current to flow safely to the ground.
 Match and connect. Match the wire colors from the fixture/switch to
the corresponding wires in the junction box. Twist the bare ends of
the wires together securely, ensuring all strands are incorporated.
 Secure connections. Use approved wire nuts to secure the
connections. Screw the wire nut tightly onto the twisted wires until it's
snug.
 Double-check. Recheck all connections to ensure they are tight and
no loose wire strands are present. Loose connections can lead to
overheating and pose a fire hazard.

5. Mounting the Fixture/Switch

 Follow instructions. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for
specific mounting procedures for your fixture or switch.
 General steps. In most cases, you'll likely attach a mounting bracket
to the junction box first, followed by securing the fixture or switch
body onto the bracket using the provided screws.
 Level and secure. Ensure the fixture is level and firmly attached to
avoid any wobbling or movement.

6. Testing and Final Touches

 Turn on power. Return to the circuit breaker panel and turn the
breaker back on to the "On" position.
 Test functionality. Turn on the new switch and verify that the fixture
lights up properly. If it doesn't, double-check your wiring connections
or consult the fixture's manual for troubleshooting steps.
 Label the circuit breaker for future reference.

Additional Considerations
Grounding. Proper grounding is essential for safety. Ensure the fixture and
switch are properly grounded using the designated grounding wire.
Lighting Loads. Verify that the circuit breaker amperage rating is sufficient
for the new fixture and the overall lighting load on the circuit.
Local Codes. Always adhere to your local electrical codes and regulations
when performing electrical work.

INFORMATION SHEET 3.3-3

Ratings of Lighting Fixtures

Learning Objectives
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
 Recognize the importance of ratings in selecting lighting fixtures.
 Identify and interpret common ratings associated with lighting
fixtures.
 Choose lighting fixtures based on their ratings

Introduction
Lighting fixtures are integral components of any space, providing
illumination for various purposes ranging from practical tasks to aesthetic
ambiance. In the process of selecting lighting fixtures, understanding the
associated ratings is crucial to ensure that the chosen fixtures meet the
specific needs and requirements of the environment they will illuminate.
This information sheet aims to delve deeper into common ratings associated
with lighting fixtures and their significance in the selection process.

Common Ratings of Lighting Fixtures

1. Wattage (W)
Wattage denotes the amount of electrical power consumed by the lighting
fixture. Historically, higher wattage correlated with brighter light output.
However, technological advancements have led to the development of more
energy-efficient lighting options. Thus, while wattage remains a
consideration, it is no longer the sole determinant of brightness. Consumers
should balance wattage with other factors, such as lumens, to achieve
desired illumination levels while minimizing energy consumption.

2. Lumens (Lm)
Lumens quantify the total amount of visible light emitted by a lighting
fixture. Unlike wattage, which primarily reflects power consumption, lumens
directly measure brightness. When selecting lighting fixtures, it is essential

to consider the desired level of illumination for the intended space. Factors
such as room size, purpose, and desired ambiance will influence the
appropriate lumens requirement.

3. Color Temperature (Kelvin)

Color temperature characterizes the appearance of light emitted by the

fixture, ranging from warm (lower Kelvin values) to cool (higher Kelvin
values). Warm light (typically 2700-3000K) imparts a cozy and inviting
atmosphere, making it suitable for residential settings. In contrast, cool light
(5000K and above) provides a more energizing ambiance, making it ideal for
task-oriented environments such as offices and workshops.

4. Color Rendering Index (CRI)

CRI measures the ability of a light source to

accurately render colors compared to natural
light. It is rated on a scale from 0 to 100, with
higher values indicating better color rendition.
Lighting fixtures with a high CRI are essential in
environments where color accuracy is critical,
such as art studios, retail spaces, and healthcare
facilities, to ensure accurate representation of
colors and textures.

5. IP Rating (Ingress Protection)

IP rating evaluates the degree of protection provided by a lighting fixture

against intrusion of solid objects (first digit) and moisture (second digit). For
example, an IP65-rated fixture is dust-tight and protected against water jets,
making it suitable for outdoor use in harsh weather conditions. IP ratings
are particularly important when selecting fixtures for outdoor or industrial
environments where exposure to dust, water, or other contaminants is a
concern.

6. Energy Efficiency Rating

Energy efficiency ratings, such as ENERGY STAR certification, indicate that

a lighting fixture meets specific energy efficiency criteria set by regulatory
bodies. Energy-efficient lighting fixtures not only help reduce electricity
consumption and lower utility costs but also contribute to environmental
sustainability by minimizing greenhouse gas emissions. When comparing
lighting options, consider energy efficiency ratings to make environmentally
conscious choices without compromising lighting quality or performance.

Understanding the various ratings associated with lighting fixtures
empowers consumers to make informed decisions tailored to their specific
lighting needs and preferences. By considering factors such as wattage,
lumens, color temperature, CRI, IP rating, and energy efficiency, individuals
can select lighting fixtures that optimize illumination quality, energy
efficiency, and environmental suitability for any given application.
