1.As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit
of rushing through life, being on the go from morning to night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is
essential for a healthy mind and body.
Stress is a natural part of every life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing it is often
supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when
the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health.
The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not
afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities. Others lose
heart at the first signs of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress in whatever form, we react both
chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between "fight" or "flight", and in more primitive days the
choice made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are not likely to be so extreme, but
however little the stress, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued
exposure to stress that health becomes endangered. Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart
disease have established links with stress. Since we cannot remove stress from our lives (and it would be unwise
to do so even if we could), we need to find ways to deal with it.
29: People are finding less and less time for relaxing themselves because_
A. they do not know how to enjoy themselves
B. they are becoming busier

6
C. they are travelling fast all the time
D. they do not believe that relaxation is important for health

B. Different people can withstand different amount of stress
C. It’s easy to change the habit of keeping oneself busy with work
D. We can find some ways to avoid stress
32: In paragraph 3. "such a reaction" refers back to
A. losing heart at die signs of difficulties B. making a choice between "fight" or "flight"
C. responding to crises quickly D. reaction to stress both chemically and physically
33: In the last sentence of the passage, "do so" refers to ________.
A. find ways to deal with stress B. establish links between diseases and stress

2.Stella McCartney was born in 1972, the daughter of pop star Sir Paul McCartney. She is the youngest of
three sisters. One sister is a potter and the other sister does the same job as their mother used to do - she works
as a photographer. Stella's brother, James, is a musician. Stella first hit the newspaper headlines in 1995 when
she graduated in fashion design from art college. At her final show, her clothes were modeled by her friends,
Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss, both well-known models. Unsurprisingly, the student show became front-page
news around the world. Stella hadn't been in the news before as a fashion designer but she had spent time
working in the fashion world since she was fifteen. In March 1997, Stella went to work for the fashion house
Chloe. People said the famous fashion house had given her the job because of her surname and her famous
parents but Stella soon showed how good she was. She designs clothes which she would like to wear herself,
although she's not a model, and many famous models and actors choose to wear them. In 2001 Stella started her
own fashion house and has since opened stores around the world and won many prizes. A lifelong vegetarian,
McCartney does not use any leather or fur in her design. Instead, she uses silk, wool and other animal-derived
fabrics.

3. Do you feel like your teenager is spending most of the day glued to a phone screen? You're not too far off. A
new survey from the Pew Research Center reveals the surprising ways that technology intersects with teen
friendships – and the results show that 57 percent of teens have made at least one new friend online. Even more
surprisingly, only 20 percent of those digital friends ever meet in person.
While teens do connect with their friends face-to-face outside of school, they spend 55 percent of their day
texting with friends, and only 25 percent of teens are spending actual time with their friends on a daily basis
(outside of school hallways). These new forms of communication are key in maintaining friendships day-to-day

7
– 27 percent of teens instant message their friends every day, 23 percent connect through social media every
day, and 7 percent even video chat daily. Text messaging remains the main form of communication – almost
half of survey respondents say it's their chosen method of communication with their closest friend.
While girls are more likely to text with their close friends, boys are meeting new friends (and maintaining
friendships) in the gaming world – 89 percent play with friends they know, and 54 percent play with online-
only friends. Whether they're close with their teammates or not, online gamers say that playing makes them feel
"more connected" to friends they know, or gamers they've never met.
When making new friends, social media has also become a major part of the teenage identity – 62 percent of
teens are quick to share their social media usernames when connecting with a new friend (although 80 percent
still consider their phone number the best method of contact). Despite the negative consequences-21 percent of
teenage users feel worse about their lives because of posts they see on social media – teens also have found
support and connection through various platforms. In fact, 68 percent of teens received support during a
challenging time in their lives via social media platforms.
Just as technology has become a gateway for new friendships, or a channel to stay connected with current
friends, it can also make a friendship breakup more public. The study reveals that girls are more likely to block
or unfriend former allies, and 68 percent of all teenage users report experiencing "drama among their friends on
social media."
29: The word "digital" in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to _____.
A. analogue B. numeracy C. numerous D. online

lives.
C. Boys are more likely to meet new friends than girls.
D. Most teens are not easy to give others their usernames when making new friends.
4. Jean spent her first few years in Hooper and her family moved to Otsego early in her life. She was only
ten when her father died unexpectedly, leaving her mother to raise and support their family alone. Her mother
soon went to work outside the home to provide for the family, and Jean, being one of the oldest, had to help
care for her younger siblings. Although she had much responsibility at home, Jean thoroughly enjoyed school
and was an excellent student. She went on to graduate 10th in her class at Otsego High School in 1953. While
still in high school, Jean met a young man named Charles "Chuck" Holly, at a dance in Alamo; and they were
quite taken with each other.
Over the next few years, their love for each other blossomed and they were married on February 24, 1953,
while Jean was still in school. At the time, Chuck was serving his country in the military, and had come home
on leave to marry his sweetheart. Unfortunately, shortly thereafter, he was sent overseas to serve in Korea for
the next fifteen months.
Upon his discharge, the couple settled into married life together in the Plainwell, Otsego area. To help
make ends meet, Jean went to work at the collection bureau in Kalamazoo for a while, before taking a job at the
cheese company in Otsego. In 1964, Chuck and Jean were overjoyed with the birth of their son, Chuck, who

1. Millions of people are using cell phones today. In many places, it is actually considered unusual not to
use one. In many countries, cell phones are very popular with young people. They find that the phones are more
than a means of communication- having a mobile phone shows that they are cool and connected.
The explosion in mobile phone use around the world has made some health professionals worried. Some
doctors are connected that in the future many people may suffer health problems from the use of mobile phones.
In England, there has been a serious debate about this issue. Mobile phone companies are bad for your health.
On the other hand, medical studies have shown changes in the brain cells of some people who use mobile
phones. Signs of change in the tissues of the brain and head can be detected with modern scanning equipment.
In one case, a traveling salesman had to retire at young age because of serious memory loss. He couldn't
remember even simple tasks. He would often forget the name of his own son. This man used to talk on his
mobile phone for about six hours a day, every day of his working week, for a couple of years. His family doctor
blamed his mobile phone use, but his employer's doctor didn't agree.
What is it that makes mobile phones potentially harmful? The answer is radiation. High-tech machines can
detect very small amounts of radiation from mobile phones. Mobile phone companies agree that there is some
radiation, but they say the amount is too small to worry about.
As the discussion about their safety continues, it appears that it's best to use mobile phones less often. Use

2. A surgical mask is a loose-fitting, disposable device that creates a physical barrier between the mouth
and nose of the wearer and potential contaminants in the immediate environment. Surgical masks are regulated
under 21 CFR 878.4040. Surgical masks are not to be shared and may be labelled as surgical, isolation, dental,
or medical procedure masks. They may come with or without a face shield. These are often referred to as face
masks, although not all face masks are regulated as surgical masks.
Surgical masks are made in different thicknesses and with different ability to protect you from contact
with liquids. These properties may also affect how easily you can breathe through the face mask and how well
the surgical mask protects you.
If worn properly, a surgical mask is meant to help block large-particle droplets, splashes, sprays, or
splatter that may contain germs (viruses and bacteria), keeping it from reaching your mouth and nose. Surgical
masks may also help reduce exposure of your saliva and respiratory secretions to others.
While a surgical mask may be effective in blocking splashes and large-particle droplets, a face mask, by
design, does not filter or block very small particles in the air that may be transmitted by coughs, sneezes, or
certain medical procedures. Surgical masks also do not provide complete protection from germs and other
contaminants because of the loose fit between the surface of the face mask and your face.
Surgical masks are not intended to be used more than once. If your mask is damaged or soiled, or if
breathing through the mask becomes difficult, you should remove the face mask, discard it safely, and replace it
with a new one. To safely discard your mask, place it in a plastic bag and put it in the trash. Wash your hands
after handling the used mask.

3.Now that you have some ideas about what you like to do and what you’re good at, you can start gaining
skills and an education that put you in a position to pursue your passions. There are many different places where
you can hone your skills.
Community colleges are often more job oriented and practical, as well as being more affordable. If you
have decided your ideal career is a Dental hygienist, mechanic, or veterinary technician this could be a good
choice for you! You will receive applicable training in your field and get into the workforce in the shortest
amount of time.
If you have decided you want to spend several years immersed in a subject your fascinated with, a four-
year research university or liberal arts college is for you. But how do you choose which school when there are
so many options?
Some schools are hyper-focused on a specific area and do not offer as broad of an education. A good
example of this is the business school Bentley, which specializes in business subjects so they can really be the
best in that particular area but not a good choice if you think you might change majors to a different subject
altogether.
If you only have a general idea of what you would like to do as a career, you may decide to attend a
liberal arts college. These schools offer a broad education in multiple subjects such as math, science, English,
art, sociology and history to name a few. An example of a good liberal arts college is Amherst.
Going to a liberal arts school often means you have to complete core requirements in multiple different
subjects. You will lose the hyper-focus and cutting-edge technology found in some research universities, but
you will gain knowledge and skills in many different subjects and learn how to write and reason well and to
think crucially. These are some of the key skills you will need to prepare you for jobs that do not exist yet.

4. Educating children at home as an alternative to formal education is an option chosen by families in many
parts of the world. The homeschooling movement is popular in the United States, where close to one million
Children are educated at home. In Canada, 1 percent of school-age children are homeschooled, and the idea also
enjoys growing popularity in Australia, where 20,000 families homeschool their children. The movement is not
limited to these countries. Homeschooling families can be found all over the world, from Japan to Taiwan to
Argentina to South Africa.
Homeschooling is not a novel idea. In fact, the idea of sending children to spend most of their day away
from home at a formal school is a relatively new custom. In the United States, for example, it was not until the
latter part of the nineteenth century that state governments began making school attendance compulsory.
Before that, the concept of a formal education was not so widespread. Children learned the skills they would

need for adult life at home from tutors or their parents, through formal instruction or by working side by side
with the adults of the family.
In the modern developed world, where the vast majority of children attend school, families choose
homeschooling for a variety of reasons. For people who live in remote areas, such as the Australian outback or
the Alaskan Wilderness, homeschooling may be their only option. Children who have exceptional talents in the
arts or other areas may be homeschooled so that they have more time to devote to their special interests. Much
of the homeschooling movement is made up of families who, for various reasons, are dissatisfied with the
schools available to them. They may have a differing educational philosophy, they may be concerned about the
safety of the school environment, or they may feel that the local schools cannot adequately address their
children's educational needs. Although most families continue to choose a traditional classroom education for
their children, homeschooling as an alternative educational option is becoming more popular.
