Detailed Lesson Plan in Grade 4 Science

I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

1. Describe materials that sink and float.
2. Demonstrate their understanding about the materials that float and sink.
3. Classify objects according to type of material they are made of to sink or float
II. Subject matter
Properties of Matter: Floating and Sinking
III. Materials Needed
Transparent bottles (big bottles)
Water
Nails
Ping-pong balls
Marbles
Rubber Duck toys

IV. Background Knowledge:

Aside from being grouped into solids, liquids or gases, materials may also be grouped
according to their ability to absorb water, ability to float or sink, and whether they decay or
not.
V. Lesson Proper
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activyt
Motivation Elicit/Engage

Before we start on our discussion, I Yes Teacher!

have a question.
Okay class?
As you can see, I have here a ping- I think the ball will sink and the marble will float
pong ball and a marble. Which of
these do you think will float? I think they both sink

I think the ping-pong ball will sink and the marble will float

We will all know the answer once we Yes teacher!

had our experiment.
Are you ready junior scientists?
Now, what we have here are the
materials needed in this experiment.
(discuss the

materials that the students brought)

Exploration
Now, for our experiment, place the Okay teacher
materials on your table. Make sure
that no gadgets on your table because
we will be using water okay?

Now the class will be divided into

groups. Every group will consist of 3
members to perform the experiment.
1. In every group, there will be a leader, the secretary and
For our procedure, can you please the presenter.
read? 2. The Leader will be the one who will facilitate the
group. The secretary will record the observations and
the presenter will be the one to report it In front of the
class.
3. Each group will have fair materials.
2 clear transparent bottles with water
Ping pong ball
Marble
Rubber duck toy/any rubber toy
Coin
Rock
Piece of sponge
4. The recorder will write the description/s of the plastic
bottles with caps in the table below.
5. Fill the bottle with water.
6. The leader will place the marble and the ping pong ball
in each bottle at the same time.
7. Observe the materials. Did it float or sink?
8. Record your observation. Describe the material and
place it on the table below.
9. Do it as well with: Rubber toy and Coin
Rock and sponge
10. Do the same procedures in steps 6 for the rest of the
materials given to your group.
11. After observing all the materials, clean up your mess.
Return all the materials in the tray.
12. Discuss your observation with your group mates.
13. Write your observation in the table. Classify the
materials according to whether they float or sink. What
is your basis for classifying the materials?
14. Present your table of result to the class.

Explain
This will be the table that the secretary will fill.
Name of the Description of Result after putting in the bottle

Float Sink

Explanation
Now, what happen to the materials Some materials sink and some materials float
after you put them into the water?

Which of these materials sink? Coin, Rock, and the marble

How about the materials that float? Sponge, Rubber toy and the ping pong ball

From your observations, what do you They are lightweight

think are the characteristics of the
materials that float?

How about the characteristics of the They are heavy, teacher

materials that sink?
Correct. Objects float if they are light
for their size and sink if they are
heavy for their size.

An object can be light for its size if it

contains air, for example, this ping
pong ball.
Yes, teacher!
Materials like this Duck toy floats
because it has a boat shape in the
lower part and contains air as well.

Here are some explanations for our Materials that float are usually made of wood, plastic,
lesson. Styrofoam
Can you please read Arvie?
On the other hand, Materials that sink are usually made of
metal, stone or heavy materials

Now, do you understand why some Yes teacher

materials sink and some float?

Extension
Now, what is this class? Salbabida, teacher!

Does this float or sink? It floats, teacher!

Why do you think does it float? Because it is not heavy and contains air inside

How about this one? That is a life vest, teacher.

What is this?

What is its purpose? Some people who don’t know how to swim use it so that they
won’t sink.

Does it float or not? It floats, teacher

So the life vest itself will float or Because it is made of foam

sink?
It will float, teacher
Why do you think is that so? It’s not
like the salbabida that contains air
inside yet why do you think it floats?
Plastic and wood, teacher!
Yes. Inside that life vest is foam. If
the material is made out of foam will
it again sink or float?

Same as the materials that are made Metal and stone!

of?

Evaluate
Now, we have another activity class. I will show you pictures of 2 same materials but they are different
in what it is made of. Now, on your paper, make 2 columns.
On the first column, will the Float and the other is Sink. Wr ite the letter that
corresponds to the material if it will either float or sink. Also indicate in each material
its characteristic why do you think it floats or sinks.
