e. The zero and positive sequence components of a red phase are as under:
ER0 = (0·5 − j 0·866) V;
ER1 = 2 ∠0o V
If the phase voltage ER = 3 ∠0o V, find the negative sequence component of red phase and the
phase voltages EY and EB. (6 marks)
b. Explain any THREE reasons as to why we should endeavor using water power for the generation
of electrical energy. (3 marks)
c. Explain the main factors to be considered by a Generation Company when choosing a site for a
hydro-power plant. (8 marks)
a. The towers of height 30 m and 90 m respectively support a transmission line conductor at water
crossing. The horizontal distance between the towers is 500 m. Weight of the conductor is 1·5
kg/m and the bases of the towers can be considered to be at water level. If the conductor
has a cross-sectional area of 2 cm2, an ultimate strength of 3200 kg/cm2 and the safety factor is
4, find;
i) the minimum clearance of the conductor and water (6 marks)
ii) the clearance mid-way between the supports (3 marks)
b. A 3-phase, 11 kV, 10 MVA alternator has sequence reactances of X0 = 0·05 p.u., X1 = 0·15 p.u.
and X2 = 0·15 p.u. If the generator is on no load, find the ratio of fault currents for L-G fault to
that when all the 3-phases are dead short-circuited. (6 marks)
QUESTION FOUR -15 MARKS
a. The reactances of an alternator rated 10 MVA, 6.9 kV are X1 =15 %; X2 = 20 % and Xg0 = 5%.
The neutral of the alternator is grounded through a reactance of 0.38Ω. Line to line fault occurs
at the terminals of the alternator. Determine the line currents, fault current and the terminal
voltages. (9 marks)
a. Suppose you have been tasked with explaining the importance of transmitting electric power
at high voltages, provide the proofs you will include in your presentation. (12 marks)
