NATURE OF SPORT ACTIVITIES


● Sport is about a range of specific activities that involve competition and require physical
conditioning and skills.
● Competitive all sports have a competitive element, either between individual or team.
● Required complex skills must be learned for an individual to become a performer. Basic
skills must be learned first, which are later developed into more complex skills.

Individual Sport
An individual sport is a sport in which participants compete as individuals.
● Examples of individual sports include boxing, wrestling, kickboxing, golf, fencing, martial
arts, tennis, badminton, ice skating, weightlifting, diving, and much more. Several sports
have both team and individual components, such as track and swimming.

Dual Sport
Dual sport is a type of sport that is played by two people playing against each other.
● Dual sports are played by two people opposing each other, whereas team sports involve
organized groups of people competing against each other.

RACKET SPORTS
Racket sports are characterized by the use of an implement (racket) to volley an object over to
the other side of the court over a net.

BADMINTON
HISTORY
Badminton was a game created in England then passed on to Colonial India then called
badminton as "poona".

In the 1860s, British Army officers posted to India became interested in "Poona" and took the
game home to England, where the rules of badminton were set out.

This new sport was definitively launched in 1873 at the Badminton House, where the Duke of
Beaufort introduced the game to his guests. The sport was then known as "The Game of
Badminton" for a number of years until the name was shortened to "BADMINTON".

● Badminton is a RACKET SPORT played by either two opposing players (singles) or


two opposing players (doubles).
● Competitive badminton is best played indoors because shuttlecock flight is affected by
wind. But badminton, as a casual recreational activity, can also be played outdoors.
● Badminton has been an Olympic sport since 1992 (Barcelona).

BADMINTON EQUIPMENT
1. Rackets - Badminton rackets are light, with top quality rackets weighing between 79 to 91
grams including the strings. The grip of the racket is very important.

Parts of the Racket:


1. Head
● Stringed area
2. Handle

3. Shaft
● Butt cap
2. Shuttlecock - commonly known as bird or birdie is a projectile with an open conical shape.

Types of Shuttlecock:

● Shuttlecock with feathers (Feathers and Cork base)


● Synthetic shuttles (nylon shuttles)
● Plastic shuttles

3. Badminton Court - Badminton is played on a court marked for both singles and doubles
matches. The court is rectangular and divided into halves by a net.

BADMINTON RULES

1. Scoring system - 3 x 21 rally point scoring system.


2. Each game is played with 21 points. (Maximum of 30 points)
3. A match is the best of three games. (The first player who wins two games wins the
match).

Service - at the start of the rally, the server and receiver stand diagonally, opposite
service courts.

● The serve must travel diagonally to be good.


● The serve must hit the shuttle from below the waist.
● There is only one serve.

BADMINTON STROKES

1. Forehand

● Service (under waist shot) - short service, long service, drive service,and
backhand service
● Clear - upper arm or overhead shot
● Smash - It is also called "kill"
● Drive - Hitting the shuttle as fast as you can
● Lob (underarm shot) - hitting the shuttle high and to the back of the opponent's
court.

BADMINTON PLAYERS

LEE CHONG WEI

● He is a professional badminton player from Malaysia.


● As a singles player, he ranked first worldwide during the period August 2008- June 2012

TAI TZU YING

● She is a professional badminton player from Taiwan.


● She became world No. 1 in the women's singles in December 2016, and holds the
record for being the only women's singles player ranked at the top in BWF history.

TABLE TENNIS

HISTORY
Table tennis, sometimes called pingpong, is played on a table with a net in the middle,
volleying a light ball using rackets or paddles (sometimes called bats).

GRIPS
1. Penhold Grip - The position of the thumb and index fingers is similar to how one holds a
pen.
2. Shakehand Grip - is named after a position of the fingers where the index finger and
thumb are wide apart, in the manner of a handshake.
3. The V-Grip - is when the forefinger and the middle finger sandwiches the blade.
4. The Seemiller Grip - named after Danny Seemiller, is when the thumb and the
forefinger are placed on the same side.

TABLE TENNIS EQUIPEMENTS

1. Table - A rectangular surface 9 ft. (274 cm)_ and long 5 ft. (152.5 cm)
2. The ball - It is spherical and is 40mm in diameter. It generally weighs 2.7 grams
3. The net - It is placed at the center, dividing the table into two equal halves.
4. The Racket - It should be flat and rigid

TABLE TENNIS RULES

Official table tennis games are played for 11 points. The team or player to score 11 points first
is declared the winner. In case there is a tie for 10 points between the two teams/players then
the side with the first score a lead of 2 points will be declared as the winner.

FAN ZHENDONG

● Zhendong is currently the number one table tennis player in the world, according to
the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).

MA LONG

● Ma Long is China’s star table tennis player and was the captain of the Chinese
team. People regard him to have the best forehand grip, as well as a strong backhand.

HISTORY

Traces of sprinting as a team sport extend back several thousand years - as evidenced in
images in the cave in Lascaux in France which depict people running after animals or vice
versa; this was an issue of survival of the fittest

TEAM
A team is a group of individuals working together to achieve a goal.

SPORTS
Sports include all forms of competitive physical activity or games which, through casual or
organized participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while
providing enjoyment to participants, and in some cases, entertainment for spectators.
BASKETBALL

 In basketball, there are two opposing teams playing on a court.


 Only five players at a time per team are allowed inside the playing area.
 The objective of the game is to shoot the ball in a hoop or ring, and the ball is handled
throughout the court by dribbling or passing.
 At the end of the game, the team with more points wins.
 The basic skills needed in basketball are dribbling, passing, and shooting.
 Variants of shooting techniques include the set shoot, the lay-up, the underhand shot,
the jump shot, the hook shot, and the dunk shot.
 Other skill sets in basketball involve blocking, rebounding, zone defense, man-to-
man defense, cutting, and screening.

Blocking
the ball is attempted to be blocked, but only when the ball is at the upward arc
Rebounding
retrieving a ball that bounces off after a failed shot
Zone defense
guarding anyone that comes in a specific area
Man-to-man defense
guarding a specific player one-on-one
Cutting
moving quickly to gain a better position while not holding the ball
Screening
a move to stop an opponent from guarding a teammate

VOLLEYBALL

 Volleyball is a team sport that has existed for centuries.


 It is played with six players at a time per team.
 The objective is to get the ball to the other side of the court.
 The ball can be hit three times, excluding the contact made from blocking.
 An individual player cannot touch the ball two consecutive times in a row.
 The exchange continues until the ball goes out of bounds, or is not returned properly by
one side.
 The exchange may also stop if a team commits a fault.
 Skills needed in playing volleyball are service, passing, setting, attacking, blocking,
and the dig.

Service
The ball has to go over the net and land on the opponent's court.
Passing
Passing in volleyball means you hit the ball at the upper body level. also known as
reception, is an important skill prior to setting.
Setting
preparing the ball for the attack and is the second contact to the ball.
Attacking
A volleyball attack is an offensive move made by a player to score a point by hitting
the ball over the net and into the opponent's court.
Blocking
stopping the opponent's attack with highly extended arms.
Digging
A dig is diving and preventing the opponent's attack from touching the floor.
