Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

Background and Rationale of the Study

Being a working student is generally motivated by a financial necessity to make

ends meet. It enables students to support their education and augment their income to

enhance their comprehension or aid with career objectives. It also allows students to

share the enormous expense of their exams, giving them a sense of financial

independence while simultaneously expanding their knowledge and experience. It is

stressful to work while learning. It is most likely to strike a balance between your social

life, family, school, and job obligations. Thinking about how to deal with the pressures of

working students and ensuring to have free time at least once a week can reduce their

stress levels. Filipino students are struggling because they need to follow the rules at

work to maintain their jobs and keep up with their schoolwork to avoid receiving a failing

grade. According to Commission on Higher Education (CHED), only half of the

employed students can finish college, as many cannot concentrate on their studies, while

others have poor health, and give up because of financial problems.

The concept of whether working and studying at the same time delivers more

benefits than drawbacks depend on everyone’s point of view. Some people might view

working while studying effects as a negative, while some view it as a positive.

Nonetheless, if a student commits to doing it in the right way, anything is possible. The

beneficiaries and readers of this study will be able to learn more about the effects of

being a working student among selected senior high school students in different aspects
such as academic performance, experience, and time management. As well as to discuss

the challenges and how students cope with being both a student and a worker. This study

will also show the different perspectives that can motivate other students and change their

perceptions about being a working student. The experiences and perceptions of the

working students will serve as an eye-opener for other students as well as the whole

community.

The researcher wants this study to be an eye-opener for students who need to

study and work simultaneously. The purpose of this study is to add to foster knowledge

and research on the effects of being a working student among senior high school students,

to know how hard their experiences are, to know the huge contrasts between working and

non-working students, and to know the inspirations of working students and catch the

essence of their working life. Since most of the students work, there is, by all accounts,

an absence of mindfulness and information on the significance of recognizing the states

of the working students to uncover how work might impact the nature of their school life.

Further, the students express a need to get information as that is considered to offer them

the chance to work on their lives in the future.

A lot of people know why students are working; it’s because they are financially

challenged and need to support themselves. But the researcher doesn’t exactly know their

reason. Perhaps there are other reasons why they are working and studying at the same

time. This study aims to learn more about working students and to understand them, as

well as to know what their reasons, purposes, and goals are for being a working student.

This study also aims to know how working students face and manage to solve the
problems they conquer. Normal students and people sometimes get the wrong idea and

are not able to understand the hardships of working students, only those students and

people who have experienced being working students. So, conducting this research study

can provide information to people about working students.

These days, the current trends of being a working student are more noticeable

than before. Students who are working have different coping mechanisms to adjust their

time for work and study. Being a working student may be the duty of numerous less

fortunate but willing young adults and grown-up individuals. As a result, being a working

student greatly affects the student’s ability to study and manage their time, which not

only causes problems in their academic performance but also in both their physical and

mental health. A study led by Endsleigh (2015) showed that eight out of ten (77%)

understudies are now working part time to help them with their financial needs in school.

Working while studying has both negative and positive effects. Some of the

negative effects of working while studying are the student’s performance in school; less

free time that can induce stress on the students; working while studying can badly affect a

student’s physical health; and the most crucial effect of being a working student is time

management because they need to balance academic, family, and work at the same time.

Being a working student can be hard, and they may face a lot of problems and challenges,

but working while studying has benefits too, such as having experience of working,

learning skills, and being able to earn money.

Though being a working student is hard, they still choose to take that path so that

they can achieve their dreams or their goals in life. Working while studying is rewarding,
but it can also be tiring at the same time. Because working students have a lot more to do

than normal students, they face a lot of challenges. However, students learn to value their

time more. Struggles and difficulties are part of the improvement. As this study proceeds,

some of the enumerated effects should be given a resolution to overcome the difficulties

of senior high school students.

Among those who were heavily affected by the impact of the pandemic and the

transition to online learning are students who are part of the Work-Study Service

Program. Despite the unfavorable circumstances brought about by the pandemic, the

working students continue to persevere in finishing their studies. One important reason

why many students combine study and work is that it provides them with an income,

which may help them to satisfy their consumption aspirations (Baert et al., 2016).

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to know the Effects of being a Working Student among Selected
Senior High School Students of Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion. In their Academic
Performance.

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of;

8 hours
2. What are the effects of being a working student among selected senior high
school students in Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion to their;

senior high school of colegio de la purisima Concepcion, considering their

age, grade level, and number of hours working.

3. There is no correlation between the effects of being a working students among

selected senior high school of colegio de la purisima Concepcion

Significance of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to be an eye-opener, to establish

understanding and acknowledge the circumstances of working students. The following

sectors of society will benefit from the fulfillment of this study:

Community - The beneficiary of this study is the whole community, as it can be

influential for positive societal change in the future, and it can also improve the

knowledge of everyone regarding working students.

Researcher - This study will help researchers expand her understanding, knowledge, and

analytical skills upon learning the problems of working students.

Future Researcher - This study may be used as reference data by future researchers

alike. It will also serve as a cross-reference that will give them background or an

overview for those who want to investigate the same or similar subject matter.

Working Students - This study will give them an idea of how to manage their

responsibilities in school and work so that their academic performance will not be

affected in favor of their work and studies and may serve as a guide or basis for them to

minimize or surpass the difficulties they are facing.

Students - The beneficiaries of this study are students. The respondents’ experience can

act as a guide for them and provide insight into how they will deal with pressure, time,

and academics.

Teachers - As the direct advisors in the classroom, knowing the students’ difficulties,

can highlight some schemes and tactics in arranging their lessons in a variety of

directions and strategies, and perhaps have a profound sense of consideration and a great

deal of patience for working students.

Parents - This study can provide them with a lot of insights into how their children can

learn and work at the same time and gives a broader view to help address working

students’ predicaments.

Government - The outcome of the study will help them develop efficient strategies and

worthwhile approaches that can help working students adjust their habits in a new

environment.
