METHOD STATEMENT

TETRA 4 - FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF GRAVEL PLATFORMS, SEWER FRENCH DRAIN, PIPE
WORK AND 10 000L JOJO TANK AND STAND

27th of May 2019

SITE ESTABLISHMENT

1. Site Camp

Plant will be delivered to site by Low-beds and safe off loading procedures will be followed to ensure
no harm may come to either man or machine. If required, a off loading ramp will be built where
suitable/required.

All labour and plant operators will be brought to site daily and fetched after work. The working hours
will be 07:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday. The contractor will request approval from Tetra 4 if any work
is to be done over the weekend.

All mobile plant required for earthworks will be stored within Tetra 4’s yard overnight. A designated
area of approximately 18m² will be allocated to the contractor to allow for materials required for the
scope of work (eg Sewer piping, steel reinforcement, cement, etc)

2. Contractual obligations

Before establishment takes place all contractual matters will be attended to in terms of the contract
including all OHS pre requisites.

SURVEY FOR CONSTRUCTION (STORM WATER, SEWER AND EARTH WORKS)

3. Setting Out

As discussed with the Employers representative, the setting out or staking out, will form part of the
contractor’s obligation. This is estimated to take 1 working day. The contractor will request approval
of activity layout once the pegging out has been done to verify site layout as the project will not be
done with the use of signed off drawings.

CONSTRUCTION (WATER AND SEWER)

4. Excavation

Safe keeping is vitally important when excavating and all safe keeping standards will be met as
required to ensure the trench vertical and side slopes are secure. Trenches can be excavated by either
hand or machine to the required level. Two workers are needed to guide the operator to achieve the
correct levels. One will hold the Measure Stick (Dip Stick) and the other one will stand at one of the
profiles to assure that both profiles and Measure Stick are in line with each other. He will then
indicate to the operator if he should go deeper or can continue after achieving the correct level.

5. Bedding

To achieve the correct level throughout the whole trench, profiles are also used in the same manner
as with excavation. Levels are obtained from the list as discussed above. Type of material for bedding
is specified in the contract BOQ. Imported material from commercial sources will be mixed with water
outside the trench to the required moisture content suitable for compaction. A TLB is used to
transport material and off load into the trench. Workers then use shovels and rakes to obtain an even
bed meeting the specific level requirement. Material is compacted to the specified density by plate
compactor or any other device that can achieve the required density.

6. Pipe Installation

Pipes are laid in the trench on the approved bedding. Lubricant is used for smooth line push fit action
as well as to prevent damage of the rubber seals in the pipes and fittings. Pipes will be aligned in the
trench and covered partially to hold it in place for approval of the client or his representative. On
sewer lines air testing can now be done.

7. Blanket

Cover material as indicate by the contract specifications or approved by the Engineer, can now be
used to cover the pipe. This should then be compacted to the required density as specified in the
contract. Once practical density is achieved, a simple DCP test will indicate whether the required
compaction has been achieved which may then approved by the Engineer or his Representative and
backfilling to the NGL can commence.

8. Backfill

A TLB or Loader may be used to lower excavated material into the trench in such quantities that
backfill can be done as required and approved by the Engineer and compacted to the required
specifications using either a “whacker” or “pad foot” compactor. Once the NGL is reached finishing
can commence and marker blocks can be installed where required.

9. French Drain

A French drain is to be constructed. The dimension are 1,2m x 2,4m x 1m constructed with 220mm
clay brick walls. A concrete lid is to be precast and fitted onsite. 400mm x 400mm concrete
foundations are to be cast prior to any building work commencing. 19mm stone bedding will be used
as the French drains bedding.
10. Storm Water Grid Inlet & JOJO TANK INSTALLTION

A storm water grid inlet is to be constructed at the LP (Low point) within the plant. A 160mm uPVC
pipe to be used to drain water from the grid inlet and out of the plant as required.

A 10 000L JOJO tank is to be installed upon a 6m high steel frame stand. Concrete plinths wi be
constructed to anchor the stand as required.
11. Gravel Platforms

300mm natural ground / top soil is to be stripped from the site. G5 gravel is to be used to construct 3
layers of 150mm each. The gravel is to be conditioned and compacted to level as required.

Plant List

The following plant will be used to complete the scope of work as per the order:

• TLB
• Tipper Trucks (varies load quantities)
• 140 G or similar grader
• 12 Ton Vibratory Steel Wheel Roller
• 8000L Water Bowser
• Utility Vehicle (bakkie)
