Due: September 16
1. A closed tank is partially filled with glycerin. If the air pressure in the tank is 6 lb/in.2 and the depth of glycerin is 10 ft, what is the pressure in lb/ft2 at the bottom of the tank?
2. Consider a hydraulic jack being used in a car repair shop, as in the figure. The pistons have areas A1 = 1 cm2 and A2 = 0.04 m2. Hydraulic oil with a specific gravity of 0.870 is pumped in as the small piston on the left side is pushed up and down, slowly raising the larger piston on the right side. A car that weighs 20,000 N is to be jacked up. (a) At the beginning, when both pistons are at the same elevation (h = 0), calculate force F1 in newtons required to hold the weight of the car. (b) Repeat the calculation after the car has been lifted two meters (h = 2 m). Compare and discuss.

4. What force must be exerted through the bolts to hold the dome in place? The metal dome and pipe weigh 6 kN. The dome has no bottom. Here l = 80 cm.
5. A room in the lower level of a cruise ship has a 30-cm-diameter circular window. If the midpoint of the window is 4 m below the water surface, determine the hydrostatic force acting on the window, and the pressure center. Take the specific gravity of seawater to be 1.025.
6. The flow of water from a reservoir is controlled by a 5-ft-wide L-shaped gate hinged at point A, as shown in the figure. If it is desired that the gate open when the water height is 12 ft, determine the mass of the required weight W.

7. A gate in the form of a partial cylindrical surface (called a Tainter gate) holds back water on top of a dam as shown in the figure. The radius of the surface is 22 ft, and its length (perpendicular to the figure plane) is 36 ft. The gate can pivot about point A, and the pivot point is 10 ft above the seat, C. Determine the magnitude of the resultant water force on the gate. Will the resultant force pass through the pivot? Explain.
8. An irregularly shaped piece of a solid material weighs 8.05 lb in air and 5.26 lb when completely submerged in water. Determine the density of the material. 9. The floating platform shown is supported at each corner by a hollow sealed cylinder 1 m in diameter. The platform itself weighs 30 kN in air, and each cylinder weighs 1.0 kN per meter of length. What total length L is required for the platform to float 1 m above the water surface? Assume the specific weight of water is 10,000 N/m3. The platform is square in plan view.
10. A hot-air balloon weighs 500 lb, including the weight of the balloon (without inside air), the basket, and one person. The air outside the balloon has a temperature of 80 F, and the heated air inside the balloon has a temperature 150 F. Assume the inside and outside air to be at standard atmospheric pressure of 14.7 psia. Determine the required volume of the balloon to support the weight. If the balloon had a spherical shape, what would be the required diameter? Note: Account for weight of inside air.
