questions from the rest.

Question 1. [Marks: 15]


a) (i) Explain the effect of changing field excitation of synchronous motor at constant load
with Vcurve and necessary phasor diagram.
(ii) Sketch and explain the torque versus slip curve of 3-phase induction motor. (4|
b) ) Explain briefly how does the behavior of a synchrónous motor differ from that of a 3 [3]
phase induction nmotor.
(ii) Differentiate between split-phase and capacitor-start single-phase induction motor [3|
with proper diagrams.
Question 2. [Marks: 11]
a) (i) Explain the condition for maximum efficiency of a single-phase transformer. 2]
(ii) Explain the reason why transformer is rated in KVA. Derive the equation for voltage
regulation of a single-phase transformer connected with a capacitive load with proper
phasor diagram.
b) A400 KVA, 2000/400 V,50 Hz single-phase transformer gave the following test results:
0.C. test: 2000V, 1.5A., 1.75 KW on H.V. side
S.C. test: 10V. 250A, IKW on L.V. side
Obtain the equivalent circuit as referred to H.V, side.
Question 3. [Marks: 11]
a) ) Explain the star-delta starting method of 3-phase induction motor with proper (4)
diagram.
(i) Explainthe effect of change in mechanical input of an altenator with proper diagranm. [31

b) 4 pole 3-phase 50 Hz induction motor is running at a speed of 980 rpm with an input
power of 50 kW. The stator losses at this operating condition are known to be 1300 W
while the rotational losses are 700 W. Compute
(i) therotor Cu loss,
(ii) the gross mechanical power developed,
(ii) the gross torque developed.
(iv) mechanical power output,
(v) the net torque.

a) (i) Explain the significance of back EMF in D.C. motor. 4|
(iü) Explain in details about the different speed control methods of D.C. motor with (5|
proper diagrams.
b)
The armature of a 6-pole. 800 r.p.m. lap wound D.C. generator has 90 slots. If each coíl 121
has 2 turns, compute the flux per pole required to generate an e.m.f. of 300 V.

Question 5. (Marks: 11|


a) GExplain the differences between salient pole and non-salient pole rotor of altermator. [3]
) Explain the effect of armature reaction with phasor diagrams for leading and lagging [5]
loads connected with an alternator.

b) A 3-phase. star-connected. 2-pole alternator runs at 3600 rp.m. If there are 500 [3]
conductors per phase in series on the armature winding and the sinusoidal flux per pole
is 0.1 Wb. compute the magnitude and frequency of the generated voltage. Assume K1
and K0.94.

a) i)Explain that D.C. generator induces A.C. voltage internally. [4|
(ii) Explain how to get contínuous unidirectional torque in a synchronous motor with [4|
proper diagram.
b)
A short-shunt D.C. compound generator supplies 180 Aat120 V. The resistances of [3]
armature, series ficld and shunt field windings are 0.05. 0.03 and 70 ohms respectively.
Compute
i) thee.m.f generated of that machine.
(ii) the e.m.f. generated if the same machine is connected as long-shunt machine.

a) (i) Explain with necessary diagrams how rotating magnetic field is produced by three 4]
phase coils in an induction motor.
(ii) Sketch and explain the pOwer stages of an induction motor. [3|
b) A3-phase induction motor having a 4 pole star-connected stator winding runs on 50 Hz [4]
supply. The rotor resistance and reactance per phase are 0.02 2 and 0.2 2 respectively.
Compute
(i) speed of the motor at the maximum torque.
(ü)the value of extermal rotor resistance to produce two-fifth of the maximum torque at
starting.
Question 8. (Marks: 11|
a) (i) Explain the open circuit test and short circuit test of a single-phase transformer with [5]
proper diagrams.
(ü) Discuss the merits and demerits of an autotransformer. [3]
b) 30 KVA, 2500 500V, single-phase transformer reaches maximum efficiency 95% at 31
ful! load and unity pf. Compute
(i) the efticiency of the transformer at 0.75 pf leading and 60% of full load.
(i) the copper loss at half load.
