Comprehension Type Question [3M (–1)]

Paragraph for Question No. 11 to 12

Consider a right angled prism as shown. The light ray is incident on its left face at an angle i and
emerges at an angle e. When we successively apply snell's law at both faces, we get sin2i + sin2e = µ2
If we plot sin i on x-axis and sin e on y-axis, this is a equation of circle with radius µ. Study of this circle
gives some interesting insight into behaviour of this prism. If we draw a square of side 2 × 2 as shown
the parts of circle that lie outside the square represent the case of total internal reflection because at
the point of intersection either sin i = 1 or sin e = 1. The negative values of sin i and sine refer to the
cases where the incident or the emergent ray is above the normal.

11. Point on the circle which corresponds to minimum deviation is obtained at :-

 1
(A) At an angle θ =sin−1   with possible sin i axis
µ
 1
(B) At an angle θ =cos−1   with positive sin i axis
µ
(C) Intersection of circle with positive sin i axis
(D) At an angle θ = 45° with positive sin i axis
Ans. (D)
Sol. For minimum deviation angle of incidence is equal to angle of emergence.

12. For the given situation, which quadrant of graph is representing the situation which can be
achieved.
(A) 1st qudrant (B) IIIrd quadrant (C) IVth quadrant (D) All of these
Ans. (A)
Sol. Quadrant in which angle of incidence and angle of emergence is positive.

14. A curved thick glass surface is silvered at curved face & not silvered on plane surface. Object is
placed at A as shown in figure. Considering P (pole of the silvered surface) as origin. If x - co-
