Introduction
Volunteering is way of helping others. It is giving a person’s time and ability o help
someone who may be in need of help. It is a great way for someone to interact with others
in their community. It gives someone the time to themselves while alsocreating bonds when
they are doing the greater good. From helping those in need, giving back to the community,
working for worthwhile causes, and overall helping someone with their health, mentally and
physically.
1. Republic Act 9418 – “Volunteer Act of 2007” states that it shall be the policy of
the state to promote the participation of the various sectors of the Filipino
society, and as necessary, international and foreign volunteer organization in public
and civic affairs, and adopt and strengthen the practice of volunteerism as a
strategy in order to attain national development and international understanding.
The inculcation of volunteerism as a way of life shall rekindle in every Filipino the
time-honored tradition of bayanihan to foster social justice, solidarity and
sustainable development.
2. Republic Act 8044 “The Youth in Nation Building” AN ACT CREATING THE
NATIONAL YOUTH COMMISSION, ESTABLISHING A NATIONAL
COMPREHENSIVE AND COORDINATED PROGRAM ON YOUTH DEVELOPMENT,
APPROPRIATING FUNDS THEREFOR, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.
The state recognizes the vital role of the youth in nation-building and shall;
a. Promote and protect their physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual and social well-
being of the youth to the end that the youth realize their potential for improving the
quality of life;
b.Inculcate in the youth of patriotism, nationalism and other basic desirable values
to infuse in them faith in the Creator, belief in the sanctity of life and dignity of the
human person, conviction for the strength and unity of the family and adherence to truth
and justice;
d.Mobilize the youth’s abilities, talents and skills and redirecting their creativity,
inventive genius and wellspring of enthusiasm and hope for the freedom of our people from
fear, hunger and injustice.
What is NSTP volunteerism?
The concept consists of selfless activity that mainly involves students and teachers
without any financial profit. It helps in improving the quality of human life and the
promotion of goodness. It may be in the form of support to the clean-up process, medical
teams, setting up homes or rescue operation. These are students who can willingly offer
some services to themselves by taking part in several activities and performing without
any pay. They are trained in the areas to provide education, medical aid, and emergency
rescue.
Since NSTP is aimed at improving the civic consciousness of the youth that will
translate civic and/or military leaders or volunteers whom can be called upon by the nation
in case their services are needed, volunteerism is one of the integral values that is
necessary to be developed through this program. For future engagement in the NSRC and
other volunteer work in the future.
Types of Volunteerism
1. Connect with community.By connecting with other people especially those “in need”
we receive not only the praises and compliments but also the feeling of self-worth
and respect.
2. Conserve funds for charities, nonprofits and faith-based and other community
organizations by contributing your time. Helping others bring good feelings to the
giver and the receiver of their good deeds. Using special gift to help other can be a
gift to us as we enjoy a self-esteem boost for making other lives better, and make
the world a better place.
3. Share your skills and gain new ones. By utilizing our skills for the benefit of
others we can enhance it for the better, and while doing these sorts of stuffs we
will gain new skills and talents that beneficial to others and to ourselves as well.
4. Develop self-esteem and self-confidence.Volunteering boosts self-esteem: You
are doing useful things for other people and the community, which gives a
characteristic feeling of achievement. Your part as a volunteer can likewise give you
a feeling of pride and purpose. Furthermore, the better you feel about yourself,
the better perspective you have on your life and future objectives. Volunteering
can give a feeling of direction. Whatever your age or life circumstance be,
volunteering can help you to take a break from your own concerns, keep you
intellectually invigorated, and add more zeal to your life.
5. Meet new people from all walks of life.
6. Volunteering makes you social. One of the most notable advantages of volunteering
is the effect you leave on the community as a whole. It permits you to form a
strong bond with those around you. Remember that even small acts of kindness can
make a real difference. Also, volunteering is as beneficial to you as it is to the
community. Devoting your time as a volunteer assists you with making new
companions, growing your organization, and lifting your social abilities.
7. Volunteering can advance your career.In case you’re thinking about taking up
another profession, volunteering can assist you with getting experience in your field
of interest and meeting individuals in the same field. Regardless of whether or not
you’re thinking of changing your job, Volunteering offers you the chance to obtain
significant abilities that are valued in the working environment, like collaboration,
correspondence, critical thinking, management, and association.
8. Volunteering helps you stay healthy. Volunteering can be significant for emotional
well-being. It can help reduce anxiety, stress, and depression. Surely, the social
contact which is a part of helping other people can profoundly affect your general
mental prosperity. Studies have tracked down that the individuals who volunteer
have a lower death rate than the individuals who do not. More seasoned volunteers
are less inclined to foster stress and have better-thinking abilities. Volunteering

Opportunities in Volunteering
1. Volunteering in service learning – the school allow students to serve the community
through the volunteering process. Students are prepared through service learning
for future endeavor.
2. It engages students with their mind and soul and motivate them to participate with
great enthusiasm and learn better.
3. Volunteering with skills – it allows students to fully utilize their skills.
4. Volunteering in developing communities – helping for the enhancement of the
community adopting the service to work on projects like working in the orphanages,
medical aid, bringing awareness on different socio-economic subjects and increasing
knowledge and skills of the participants for the benefit of the community.
5. Online volunteering – virtually or e-volunteering. It can be of various types like tele-
tutoring, tele-monitoring which can be performed without involving any pay.
6. Volunteering in emergencies – natural calamities like earthquake, floods, fire,
tsunamis, tornadoes, droughts, etc. they consider as immediate helper who can
provide instant response and care to relief operations. They can also act as
mediators who usually collect resources and provide assistance.
7. Volunteering in schools – they can fill the gap of teachers by teaching in the
schools.
8. Volunteering for the community – work for the community and its improvements,
like sports match or reaction activity and local areas awareness campaigns
9. Volunteering for the environment – conducting activities for the preservation,
conservation and protection of environment. Activities related to restoring the
ecological balance by planting vegetation, removing weeds, protecting endangered
species, monitoring different aspects of environment and bringing awareness to the
communities and public for the preservation of natural habitat.

11. Coordinate with your marching band or club orchestra to give free music lessons to
children in the surrounding community (this can be for a semester or a one-time
workshop).
12. A group of AB English students can offer a free college application workshop to
help high school students in the surrounding community write and edit their essays.
13. Check out online videos to learn to knit or crochet, and gather a group of students
to make hats and scarves for people in need.
14. Coordinate with a local elementary school to invite low-income students to shadow a
college student for a day, eat in the dining hall and/or attend a sports game to
promote going to college!
15. Organize an afterschool tutoring program where CWTS students can help local
elementary school students with homework.
16. CBDEM Marketing and DEVCOM students can volunteer to help local nonprofits
with their fundraising efforts and social media strategy.
17. BPED and BSESS students can offer free sports clinics for children who may not
have the opportunity to play on a team.
18. Partner with your LGU to give away excess clothing to homeless shelters or
organizations helping families in need.
19. Organize CHEFS students to cook a meal at the canteen of elementary kitchen.
20. Give back by reading or playing games with retirees at an assisted living facility
near your school.
21. CED students can volunteer at local schools to help teachers with lesson planning,
filing and grading.
22. CWTS can sign up to be a “buddy” for a child in a long-term hospital stay. Buddies
can read, play games or simply visit with children to give their parents time to
shower, sleep or get food.
23. CED English majors can volunteer to teach English to non-native speakers in the
surrounding area.
1. Students can volunteer to provide free babysitting for children of professors and
staff during busy times on campus, like finals or the beginning of a semester.
2. Check with your school to see if student volunteers can clean academic facilities
for a day to give janitorial staff a break.
3. Have students sign a pledge to be more conscious about cleaning up in the dining
halls and classrooms to ease some of the burden on janitorial staff!
With a little of your time, you can impact your campus and community in a big way.
