Abstract
Mosquito Repellents are essentially required these days. Mosquito coils are one
of the cheapest and effective way of avoiding them, but this coils are made up of
chemicals which can harm to our health. So we thought about making an alternative
mosquito coil that is not harmful to our health, a mosquito coil that is made up of
Oregano leaves. The problem about dengue mosquitoes still goes on
despite all the government efforts. Oregano leaves can help reduce the
incident of dengue because it acts as mosquito repellant like atis,
citronella and madre de cacao. Oregano Leaves can be dried and
burned slowly to produce a pleasant smell that drive away mosquitoes.
Introduction
Background of the Study
We chose this project because a mosquito coil made up from natural mosquito
repelling will remove the health problems caused by commercial mosquito repellents.
Oregano Leaves are easy to find and very common and also if this project succeed this
can be profitable for business and can encourage other use of our country’s natural
resources.
Statement of the Problem
Recent studies showed that the smoke generated from burning mosquito coil is
of certain health concerns, a person being exposed to the smoke coming from the coil
may suffer severe headache, nausea and vomiting, the condition will be severe among
asthmatic patients. The emission of formaldehyde from one burning coil can be as high
as that released from 51 burning cigarettes. This is because of the chemicals found in
mosquito coils. Making a mosquito coil out of natural ingredients may remove these
problems.
Objectives
Have an alternative solution to prevent the different kind of diseases that

mosquito brings especially dengue fever and not cause another problem. Make use of
the natural resources of our country to solve common problems caused by mosquitoes,
especially dengue.
Significance of the Study
The importance of our project is that we’ll be able to make a mosquito coil that is
not harmful to our health and to kill mosquitoes that are vector-carriers of dengue.
Scope and Delimitations
This project tackles on making a mosquito coil that is made up of natural

ingredients that is not harmful to human health. Our project also tackles the protection
of human beings against mosquito bites that cause diseases.
Procedure
In making mosquito coil out of oregano leaves, the researchers followed the following
steps:
1. Oregano Leaves was sun dried for a few days.

2. If the Oregano Leaves is fully dried you can now pulverized it using a mortar
and pastel.
3. Mix equal amount of starch and pulverized oregano leaves add water to make
a paste like consistency. Mix thoroughly.
4. Now get the commercial katol and use the foil to make a mold.
5. Now pour the mixed starch and oregano leaves into the mold and let it
dry. You now have a katol.
6. If your katol does not burn properly you could increase the ratio of pulverized
oregano leaves.
Conclusion
From the findings made, the researchers arrived at the following conclusion:
1. Oregano Leaves can be used as an alternative mosquito coil.

2. Oregano Leaves contain substances that can drive away mosquitoes.
3. Oregano Leaves have some medicinal properties.
Recommendation
Our “katol” made from oregano leaves lets you drive away mosquitoes and other
insects, in a way that doesn’t add the environmental pollution. It doesn’t need
equipment to use it other than just lighting it up and it is portable and can fit into small
houses. We recommend this experiment to the other students to do and they would
learn a lot.
Definition of Terms
For better understanding of the study, the following terms were defined
operationally:
Alternative Mosquito Coil – This refers to the Oregano Leaves in place of commercially
existing mosquito coil also known as katol.
Extent of Effectiveness – This refers to the degree of efficiency of the prepared oregano
leaves as an alternative mosquito coil.
Oregano Leaves - a bushy perennial mint (Origanum vulgare) with leaves that are
used as a seasoning and a source of aromatic oil.
Mosquito Coil / Katol – This refers to a repelling incense, usually shaped into a spiral,
and typically made from dried paste pyrethrum powder. The coil is usually held at the
center of the spiral, suspending it in the air or wedged by two pieces of fireproof nettings
to allow smoldering.
Usefulness – This refers to how effective the prepared oregano leaves as an alternative
mosquito coil.
