On completion of the course, student will be able to–
Describe the constructional details and working of various types of the DC machines
Estimate the performance of any DC machine (shunt, series or compound) and analyze various speed
control & braking techniques for DC motor
Explain the construction & working of three phase transformer and extend significance of different
connections of three phase transformer
Explain special types of transformer like pulse transformer, isolation transformers.

Unit I Fundamentals DC Machines 09 Hours
DC.MACHINES: Construction of D.C. machines, commutator and brush arrangement, armature winding
and its types, armature reaction: Demagnetization and cross magnetization ampere turns, principle of
compensation, compensating winding, methods to minimize the effect of armature reaction, concept of
Motoring, types of motor, Concept of back emf, EMF equation, torque equation, characteristics of d.c.
motors.
Unit II Performance Analysis of DC Machines 09 Hours
Method of speed controls, concept of braking of DC separately excited motors (Rheostatic, Regenerative and
plugging). Parallel and series operation of motor, starter for shunt and series motor, Design of grading of
resistance of starters, testing: Losses and efficiency, Brake load test, Swinburne test, Hopkinson’s test,
Retardation test, field test. Application of Generator and Motor.

Introduction to Resister, Capacitor and Inductor. PN Junction diode, diode as rectifier, Specification of
rectifier diodes, half wave, full wave (centre tapped, bridge) rectifier, Zener diode characteristics,
Specifications, Characteristics & Specification of BJT. CE, CB, CC configurations. Operation of BJT in cut
off, saturation and active regions. BJT as switch
Unit II FET & MOSFET 06 Hours
FET construction; characteristics, Biasing circuits for FET amplifiers, FET equivalent circuit, MOSFET: N-
MOS, P-MOS and CMOS; structure and I-V characteristics. MOSFET as a switch

Common emitter BJT amplifier, direct coupled two-stage amplifier; Block diagram of operational amplifier,

Open Loop & Closed Loop- Inverting, Non-Inverting and Differential (Using one op-amp). AC &

Summing amplifier (Inverting & Non-Inverting), Sub tractor, Integrator, Differentiator, Instrumentation
Amplifier (3 op-amps), I-V & V-I converter. Comparators, Zero Crossing Detector, Schmitt trigger,

Unit VI Monolithic IC Applications 07 Hours
Sine wave generator- RC phase Shift, Wein Bridge using op-amp, IC 555 (Timer): Block Diagram,
Multivibrators and Applications. PLL- Introduction, Block Diagram, Principles & description of individual

1) Design programs involving Decision control statements, Loop control Statements and function
2) Debug C program that uses structures pointers, and files.
3) Analyze the give problem statement to create basic program design using C++.
4) Understand and apply various object-oriented features to solve various computing problems using C++
