13. Mention the design considerations to be followed in the case of under reamed piles

PART B
1. A single under-reamed pile is to be installed in a medium to stiff dense sand deposit
with length 15 m and γ=17kN/m3. The diameter of the pile shaft and the bulb are 1 m
and 2.5 m respectively. Φ = 36°, average adhesion factor = 0.6. Determine the
allowable load on the pile by ensuring a factor of safety 2.0. N=20.
2. A drilled pier with a belled bottom is to be constructed in a clay deposit with
undrained shear strength of 100 kN/m 2. The length of the pile is 20 m with diameter
1.5 m at the top and 2.5 m at the base. The bell is having a height of 1.25 m. Estimate
the ultimate load and allowable load with a factor of safety 2.5.
3. A two bulb under reamed pile is installed in a medium stiff clay having an average
undrained cohesion of 78 kN/m2 obtained from a triaxial test. The length of the shaft
from the ground surface up to the centre of first bulb is 8 m and the centre to centre
of bulb is 1.2 times the diameter of the bulb. The diameter of the shaft is 800 mm and
that of bulb is 2000 mm. Determine the allowable load on the pile allowing a FOS of
2. Take ∝=0.5
4. A double under-reamed pile (shaft diameter 0.5m, bulb diameter 1m, total depth
11m) is installed in a stratum of cohesive soil. The centre of the under-reams are at
depths of 8.5m and 10 m respectively from the ground level. Evaluate the ultimate
vertical compressive load on the pile. The undrained shear strength along the
cylindrical portion is 60 kPa, and the same around the under-ream is 100 kPa and
below the pile tip is 150 kPa. The bulb is 65 cm thick close to the stem and 15 cm
thick at the edges. Use the IS 2911 (Part 3) 2021 method.
5. The figure shows a concrete drilled pier with a belled bottom. The details of the pile
and the soil properties are given in the figure. Estimate the ultimate uplift load.
Neglect conical shape of the belled portion in computing self weight.

6. A drilled pier of length 8 m and shaft diameter of 1 m is constructed in an expansive

soil. If the depth of active zone is 2.5 m and the bulb diameter is 1.50 m, determine
(a) the total uplift force on the pier, (b) total resisting force due to surface friction, (c)
factor of safety against uplift a dead load of 200 kN acting on the top of the pier.
Assume undrained shear strength of soil as 60 kN/m2 and adhesion factor ∝= 0.5, 𝛾
= 18 kN/m3 , Nc =60
