BMW 3 Series (E 90, E 91, E 92, E 93)

These installation instructions only apply to cars with SA 662 (Business radio) or SA 667
(Audio radio).

Installation time
The installation time for 3 Series cars is approx. 2.0 hours, for 1 Series cars it is approx. 2.75 hours.
This may vary depending on the condition of the car and the equipment in it.
In general, all cars before 09/06 must be upgraded to the latest I stage status by flashing before starting the work.
Depending on the production age of the car and the work already carried out on the car, the programming times
will vary, which means that we cannot quote a specific time at this point.
The installation time does not include any time for programming, as this depends on the age of the car and the
equipment in it.

Important information
These installation instructions are primarily designed for use within the BMW dealership organisation and by
authorised BMW service companies.
In any event, the target group for these installation instructions is specialist personnel trained on BMW cars with
the appropriate specialist knowledge.
All work must be completed using the latest BMW repair manuals, circuit diagrams, servicing manuals and work
instructions, in a rational order, using the prescribed tools (special tools) and observing current health and safety
regulations.
If you experience installation or function problems, limit troubleshooting to approx. 0.5 hour for
mechanical or 1.0 hour for electrical work.
In order to reduce costs and avoid any additional expense, send a query immediately to the Technical Parts Support
via the Aftersales Assistance Portal (ASAP).
Specify the following information:
- Chassis number
- Part number of the retrofit kit
- A precise description of the problem
- Work steps already carried out
Do not archive the hard copy of these installation instructions since daily updates are made by ASAP!

Installation information
Ensure that the cables and/or lines are not kinked or damaged as you install them in the car. The costs thereby
incurred will not be reimbursed by BMW AG.
Additional cables/lines that you install must be secured with cable ties.
If the specified PIN chambers are occupied, bridges, double crimps or twin-lead terminals must be used.
All pictures show LHD cars; proceed accordingly on RHD cars.

5. To install iPod and USB connection cable in E87 cars before 03/07

Cut the insulating mat at the dashed line (1).

2 Mark the holes (2) and (3) on the glovebox and drill
25 through.

1 Enlarge the hole (2) to a diameter of 25 mm and the
130 hole (3) to 19 mm with a step drill bit.

Insert branch C1 (socket) of USB connection

cable C into USB holder I.

Install iPod connection cable B and USB

2 connection cable C as follows:
C1 1 - Push grommet G onto branch B1 and insert it
into the glovebox (1)
B1 C2 - Insert USB holder I in the glovebox (1) and screw
G on from behind using a retaining nut (2)

B C - Route branches B1 and C1 to the vicinity of the

radio receiver

6. To install iPod and USB connection cable in E81 cars after 03/07

Remove the insulating mat in the drilling area.

Drill a hole (1) in the illustrated area of the
glovebox (2) using a 17 mm step drill bit.

Install iPod connection cable B as follows:

- Route branch B1 through the hole
- Push grommet G onto branch B1 and insert it
into the glovebox (1)
1 B1 - Route branch B1 to the vicinity of the radio
receiver

Remove the reinforcement (1) in the marked area of

the glovebox (2).
Mark the hole (3) at the middle of the cross and drill
2 using a 25 mm step drill bit.

Install USB holder I as follows:

3 E - Route branch C2 through the hole (1)
- Insert USB holder E in the glovebox (2) and
2 screw on from the inside using a retaining nut (3)

- Route branch C2 to the vicinity of the radio

7. To install iPod and USB connection cable in 3 Series cars

Remove the service flap (1) from the glovebox.

Drill holes (2) and (3) in the cover of the service
15 mm 20 mm flap (1) at the dimensions shown, using a step drill
bit.

Install iPod connection cable B and USB holder I in

B1 the service flap (1) as follows:

- Push grommet G onto branch B1 and insert it
into the service flap (1)
C2 2 - Insert USB holder I in the service flap (1) and
screw on from behind using a retaining nut (2)

B 1 - Route branches B1 and C2 to the iPod interface

in the vicinity of the radio receiver

8. To connect and install the cable kit and iPod interface

A8 Disconnect the following cables from plug X13812
(black 16-pin) of the radio receiver and connect to
socket casing E:
- Brown cable from PIN 12
into socket casing E PIN 1
- Red/green cable from PIN 15
A6 into socket casing E PIN 2
A4
- Green cable from PIN 9
A7 into socket casing E PIN 3

Connect branches A4 – A7 as follows to
plug X13812:
- Branch A4, green/orange cable, to PIN 11
- Branch A5, green cable, to PIN 9
- Branch A6, red/green cable, to PIN 15
- Branch A7, brown cable, to PIN 12
- Connect branch A8 to socket casing E

Disconnect the following cables from plug X13813

(black 12-pin) of the radio receiver and connect to
socket casing F:
F - Yellow cable from PIN 7
A9 into socket casing F PIN 1
- Black cable from PIN 2
into socket casing F PIN 3
- Transparent cable from PIN 8
into socket casing F PIN 2
A1 -A3 X13813 If the cable colours in the car do not match, the
pin assignment must be observed.

Connect branches A1 – A3 to plug X13813 as
follows:
- Branch A1, black cable, to PIN 2
- Branch A2, yellow cable, to PIN 7
- Branch A3, transparent cable, to PIN 8
- Connect branch A9 to socket casing F

9. Concluding work and coding

This retrofit system does not require coding.

- Connect the battery
- Conduct a brief test
- Initialise the iPod as follows
1. Disconnect the iPod if it is connected
2. Switch on the ignition
3. Switch on the radio
4. Change to AUX mode
5. Press and hold station button 1 until BMW appears on the radio display
6. Switch off the ignition
- Conduct a function test
- Re-assemble the car
