What is Burning Man?

1 Over 67,000 people travel to the desert in Nevada for the Burning Man festival each year.
Burning Man started in 1986 in San Francisco. It doesn’t celebrate any particular holiday or historic
event. Instead, it aims to create a large temporary artistic community in the desert.

2 There is no money at Burning Man. Participants should be self-reliant, bringing in (and leaving
5 with) everything they need to survive. Participants should also participate in the community and give
gifts to others. The ‘leave no trace’ policy means that the desert should look completely untouched
once everyone leaves.

3 For the eight days that Burning Man lasts, it is like a small city. There are roads and
neighbourhoods, and even a small airstrip for planes. However, instead of normal businesses and
10 homes, there are enormous art installations which the participants created, such as the iSheep, a herd
of mechanic sheep with flashing lights. Users can even give the iSheep commands. Other art
installations include an Indonesian shadow puppet theatre and a huge ‘shark car’ that drives across
the sand. There is a theme every year, such as ‘I, Robot’ in 2018 or ‘The Body’ in 2000. To mark the
end of the event, people watch a giant wooden model of a man burn to the ground.

Read the following article.

Van Phillips: an inventor changing athletes’ lives

1 Van Phillips is the inventor of Flex-Foot, a type of artificial foot and limb that helps amputees to
reach their full athletic potential. About 90% of amputee runners in the Paralympics use Phillip’s
invention or a variation of Phillips’s design. The creation of Flex-Foot has helped countless amateur
athletes with missing limbs to pursue their athletic goals.

5 2 Phillips was born in 1954 in the United States. From a young age, he enjoyed sports and outdoor
activities. However, when he was 21, a motorboat collided with him while he was waterskiing, and
he lost his lower leg. At the hospital, doctors gave Phillips an uncomfortable rubber and wood
artificial leg. The design did not allow him to run or jump, and Phillips believed he could design
something better. As a result, he dedicated his life to designing prosthetic limbs.

10 3 Most prosthetic feet, at the time, had the shape of human feet. Their design changed very little
since World War II. While studying at Northwestern University Medical School Prosthetic-Orthotic
Centre, Phillips had the idea to give the artificial limbs a ‘C’ shape, and to make them out of a
bendable, light material. He called his invention the Flex-Foot, and started selling it in 1984. Later
that decade, he came up with a special version called the Flex-Foot Cheetah for top athletes. The
15 Flex-Foot puts a slight spring in users’ steps, and in many cases, allows them to run even faster than
before.

4 Phillips’ invention was an instant success. Amputees achieved amazing feats wearing the
Flex-Foot. In 1998, Tom Whittaker reached the top of Mount Everest using a Flex-Foot. In 2018,
Xia Boyu, from China, accomplished the same feat as a double amputee. In 2005, Sarah Reinertsen
20 completed the Ironman Triathlon in just over 15 hours. Phillips received a pile of letters from
thankful amputees for changing their lives.

5 Today, Phillips is expanding his mission to those who cannot afford expensive artificial limbs.
He is working on creating an affordable and effective artificial limb for victims of landmines. He
hopes to give freedom of movement and freedom from pain to amputees around the world.

I know my (9) (parents’/parent’s) goal is to help me, but sometimes it’s very frustrating. Perhaps I

20 points in the first two sets. Then, after having some refreshing
