Release notes
Release description
HPE Recovery Manager Central (RMC) Software delivers unified data protection for your business critical
application data stored on HPE Storage arrays. RMC addresses a range of RPO/RTO objectives with
flexible recovery options using snapshots, backups, and replicated data copies to meet a wide variety of DR
requirements.
RMC primarily automates snapshot-based protection on HPE 3PAR storage arrays and HPE Nimble
Storage without any impact to the application server. RMC also supports fast and efficient backups directly
from these primary storage platforms to HPE StoreOnce backup systems using Express Protect technology.
Although RMC can protect any application data on any supported storage platform using crash-consistent
snapshots and backups, application-integration is supported for VMware vSphere (RMC-V), Microsoft SQL
Server and database (RMC-S), Microsoft Exchange Server (RMC-E), Oracle database (RMC-O), and SAP
HANA (RMC-SH) databases on HPE 3PAR storage arrays. For HPE Nimble Storage arrays, application
consistency is supported only for Microsoft SQL Server (RMC-S).
Fundamentally, by offering the ability to manage snapshots and backups, RMC allows HPE Storage
customers to meet copy data management challenges more easily and meet the different recovery SLAs
that their business demands. For more information, see the latest relevant user documentation:

Features and Enhancements

RMC 6.1.0

• Peer Copy - Facilitates asynchronous periodic replication between two or more homogeneous or
heterogeneous storage systems. Peer Copy allows for one-to-many, many-to-one, and multihop
topologies, managed from within the RMC GUI.
• Ability to suspend a running Peer Copy job.
• Ability to resume a suspended or erroneous Peer Copy job.

RMC-E 6.1.0

Support for HPE 3PAR virtual volumes that are mounted as directories or subdirectories of other mounted
drives.

RMC-O 6.0.0

• Support for database server registration with non-root users.

• GUI enhancements for protection of Oracle databases in Remote Copy Configuration.
• Revamped user interface — new copies view and clone workflows.
• Ability to create instant clones from backups on HPE StoreOnce.
• Ability to create multiple clones of a file system database on either the same production server or
different backup servers.

RMC-V 6.0.0

• Support for backup and restore of VMware datastores that span across more than one volume from the
same HPE 3PAR disk array.
• Centralized Copy Policy Management from vCenter UI.
• Ability to provide folder-level protection for datastores.
• Revamped user interface — new copies view and clone workflows.
• Ability to recreate the VM (clone) from VM snapshot or backups.
• Ability to recreate one or more VMs from datastore snapshots or backups.
• Ability to automatically restore backups to another volume (physical clone). RMC-V can automatically
create a volume in the storage device and restore the datastore.

4 Release notes
• Ability to search copies by VM or datastore name. View all copies and schedules details in search results
and recover objects.
• Ability to view all activities in the RMC-V plug-in.

RMC-S 6.0.0

• Support for HPE Nimble Storage.

• Usability improvement by removing the need for a separate Interface Server.
• Copy Data Management with enhanced cloning workflows.
• Ability to create virtual clones from HPE StoreOnce backups (Express Restore).
• Support for MS SQL that is running in virtualized environments (physical or virtual RDM and VMFS).
• Protection of transaction log repository with copy policies.
• Enhanced ISV integration.
• Support for Microsoft Clustered Shared Volumes.

RMC-SH 6.0.0

• Ability to create virtual clones from HPE StoreOnce backups (Express Restore).
• Support for HPE Serviceguard.
• Support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
• Support for Logical Volume Manager.

Installation instructions
The procedure for Recovery Manager Central software installation is available in the Recovery Manager
Central Installation Guide.

Upgrade information
You can upgrade RMC only from RMC 6.0.0 to RMC 6.1.0. The upgrade procedure for Recovery Manager
Central software is available in the Recovery Manager Central Installation Guide.

Statutory note
To maintain data consistency, ensure that the target volumes in a peer copy relationship are not used for
any other purposes.

RMC 6.1.0 Limitations

• You can only back up volumes with GST (Group scoped target) over FC.
• You can only back up volumes with VST(Volume scoped target) over iSCSI.

Issues and workarounds

The open issues and the workarounds for the different RMC plug-ins are listed in this section. The first
statement states the issue that you may have encountered and is followed by a suggested action.

Release notes 5
If you are protecting HPE Nimble Storage volume collection using Nimble
GUI and Nimble VSS provider, then RMC-S snapshot creation fails.
Action

Remove the Microsoft VSS application protection option of the volume collection using Nimble GUI. Retry
the operation in RMC-S.

Assigning a copy policy to large number of instances or databases and

then clicking OK throws an error
Action

1. Reattempt the operation with lesser number of instances or databases. OR,

2. Select the databases or instances configured on the same storage array.

When the copies count is large in number, the copies screen hangs,
preventing all the further operations
Action

For all the copy policies, set the Auto Delete After option to ensure that the old snapshots are automatically
deleted.

Associating a GOLD policy to multiple databases (for example, more than

20) hosted on a single MS Exchange server may result in snapshot
requests queuing up and failing
Action

For Exchange Servers displaying this issue, remove protection from each database and readd protection for
each of the databases individually by staggering the minute setting in the Effective From option to roll the
execution of snapshots on the server. Alternatively, if databases have multiple instances in DAG then when

6 Release notes
applying protection to individual databases, select alternative snapshot Server to balance the snapshot
workload across multiple servers.

The target volume set created as part of the Peer Copy operation is not
protected from external writes. These target volumes are considered as any
other read-write volume and hence, there are possibilites of corruption
Action

Do not use the volumes created on the target storage device for any other purpose when in use for Peer
Copy.

Volume collections with a combination of GST (Group Scoped Target) and

VST (Volume Scoped Target) volumes fail during Peer Copy and Express
Protect operations
Symptom
Volume collections with a combination of GST (Group Scoped Target) and VST (Volume Scoped Target)
volumes fail during Peer Copy and Express Protect operations.

Action

Do not include GST and VST volumes in a single collection.
