chapter 2 : STUDENTS EXPERIENCE IN INTERNSHIP

2.1 The way I get to the company

As the university academic curriculum the student who finish third year second semester
computer science program, students expected to take the internship program this is done
by taking a formal letter or request from university linkage for internship place for a
certain period of time. This formal letter or request let me to ask different company to
practice the theoretical knowledge those I have learned so far in the class for six
semesters change into practical knowledge. Last year at the end semester I have applied
more than two letters for different companies with best regards, but I was lucky to get an
acceptance from MoWSAIT organization gave me the chance to train and I take the
acceptance paper. Starting from July 27, 2022 I went to MoWSAIT organization to join
and to practice the theoretical knowledge I learned in the class in different section of the
industry. As I arrived first day to the company, I get a good acceptance from my
supervisor and he told me the rule and regulation of the organization before I get to work
then he introduced with the other IT directorate staff workers, operators of the
organization. MoWSAIT directorate gave the positive answer to host us for the required
period

2.4 Procedures I have been using while performing work task

The procedure during performing work task was depends on type of work task. Some
work task need a finite sequence of steps and others does not need a finite sequence of
steps simply execute by appropriate knowledge and skill.

Example 1 RJ-45 Ethernet jack punch down wiring

Figure 2-3: RJ-45 Ethernet jack

 Wiring an RJ-45 Ethernet jack is easy to do if you’re attentive to detail and
follow a couple of guidelines:
 Strip about 2 inches of outer sheath from the cable.
 The four wire pairs should remain twisted as closely as possible to the
punch down pins for maximum signal integrity.
 Avoid kinks as the light gauge copper strands can break.

 Double checks the wire color are correctly matched to the colored-coded
pin positions on the jack.

It doesn’t really matter which wiring scheme you choose because either method is fine if
both ends of the Ethernet cable are wired the same way.

How to Connect a Patch Panel to a Switch

Figure 2-5: Connect a Patch Panel to a Switch

Step 1: Attach the patch panel and switch to a rack-mounted floor stand in the wiring
closet. These units are a standard 19" inches wide and the racks are designed to
accommodate this size.

Step 2: Run the Ethernet cables from their jack locations out in the computer rooms.
Each cable will come from a wall mounted jack that the installer has placed in the walls.
They will all return to the wiring closet through a small hole cut to accommodate the
wires.

Step 3: Connect the wires into the patch panel and use a punch-down tool to connect the
wires to the appropriate slots on the patch panel. Once the wires are all attached, it is
advisable to secure the wires in a bundle using plastic zip ties.

Step 4: Label each jack location on the patch panel to designate which room is
connected by that jack. This will make troubleshooting a bad wire easier if need arises.

Step 5: Plug an Ethernet patch cable into each port on the patch panel and plug the other
end into the switch port. These wires can be moved from port to port if needed to
facilitate location change the network.

Note: since we connect different devices, we should have to use straight through cables.

How to Punch Down Wires to Patch Panel

Figure 2-6: Patch Panel

Step 1: Determine the length of the cable(s) needed.

Step 2: Strip the cable from the end. Using an Ethernet stripping tool, strip the outside
jacket about 3-6 inches from the end.

Step 3: Un-twist the wires completely to the jacket. Note: A cat 6 cable has a center
plastic spine that needs to be removed. Pull on the spine and fold the pairs back. Then cut
the spine as close to the cables end as possible.

Step4: Sort the wires in the proper pin out configuration. Note: there are two color
patterns, T568a and T568b. Make sure to terminate both sides of the cable on the same
pattern used.

Step 5: Choose a port on the patch panel to begin terminating. In general, terminating in
ascending order is ideal so start at the lowest number. First cable should be terminated to
the 1st port for example.

Step 6: Begin terminating each wire. Use a punch down tool with the 110 blade and
terminate each wire individually. Push down until the tool clicks and cuts the end of the
wire off

Step 7: Secure the cable to the patch panel. Many patch panels have slots or tabs where
zip ties can be used to secure the cable to the patch panel.

Internship report

Prepared By Surafel Teshome

Step 8: Test the connections/terminations. Use a cable tester to ensure that all wires were
terminated correctly and there you have it! If you followed the above steps, you should
now have a secure connection for your patch panel. Simply repeat the steps above for all
the connections in your install.

Figure 2-7: Punch Down Wires to Patch Panel

Steps to Punch UTP Cable in jack

 Make sure the stripper is adjusted properly on a scrap piece of cable. The stripper
should be adjusted to only cut the jacket to make removing it easier and not nick
the twisted pairs.
 Straighten the pairs out completely and lay them over the top of the jack with the
order of the color pattern for wiring.
 Keep the pairs as twisted as possible press the wire into the correct groove with
your thumbs.
 If you completely straighten the wires to run them through the jack you will risk
cross talk between the pairs.
 Using a punch down tool, punch the wires down into the blades built into the jack.
 The blades in the jack are designed to work with solid cable, and may not work
with stranded cable.

 Make sure the blade is facing the outside of the jack

Example 2, Steps to Crimp UTP Cable in RJ_45

Step 1.collect all needed materials like crimper, cutter, RJ45...

Step2. Cut outer coat of the cable wire insulation at an amount of 2.5cm on both ends of
the cables.

Step3. Fold each pair of wires backwards to expose the core of the cable

Step 4.Cut off the core and discard.

Step 5.Arrange the wires in a raw, placing them into the position, running from left to
right.

Step 6.Trim the Wires to a suitable length.

Step 7.Insert the wires into the RJ-45 connector, making sure that they stay aligned and
each color goes into its appropriate channel.

Step 8.Use the crimping tool to crimp the RJ-45 connector to the cable by pressing the
crimper

Example 3: Steps to IP configuration

1) Right click on Ethernet option

2) Open network and internet settings
3) Left click on change adapter options
4) Right click on Ethernet
5) Left click on properties
6) Double click on internet protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
7) Left click on “use the following IP address” options
8) Give appropriate IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and preferred DNS
server
9) Click on OK button

7, Check system security, if there is problem try to fix it or report it

2.5 How good I have been in performing work tasks

During internship period performing work tasks in a good manner needs some qualities
or discipline. Those qualities, discipline or other knowledge or skills helps me to achieve
and accomplish work tasks. As well as good performing work tasks are needed in order to
complete work tasks efficiently with in short period of time.

Some of below are helps me to be good at performing work tasks.

 Study hard and ask question.

 Sociable and adaptable with environment and employees.
 Follow work ethics.
 Good communication skill.
 Time management.
 Prioritizing work task according to relevance and importance.
 Take risk and failure.

2.6 Challenges I have been facing while performing work tasks

Everywhere there is a challenge even the reason why we students learn is to solve a
problem (challenges) that come in our life, and also the word engineering by itself is a
systematic way of solving a problem. Internship gives me an experience and as well as
challenges, I faced challenges in my internship that I hadn’t anticipated. When we get an
obstacle in front of some situation we usually assume that it is a good chance to know

about a new thing that have to run smoothly and that the overall experience will offer
what I hoped for increasing my problem solving skills. In this case an opportunity to
grow both personally and professionally, we found our self-faced with challenges that we
don’t feel able to handle before internship. But the two important things to remember is
to maintain professionalism and always work to find that are mutually beneficial to all,
which will help to solve the problems I have faced. Since we are a student, we were new
for many things. Below I tried to mention some of the challenge that I have faced.

 Shortage of time and Being new for practical works

 Due to lack of employees punctuality
 Due to lack of experienced and motivated employee
 Due to lack of materials
 Distance of organization, and Lack of transport.
 Economic problem, Weather condition, and physical challenges. .

2.7 Measures I have been taken in order to overcome these challenges

To overcome the above challenges I have studied hard day and night using the resources
from the internet and from the networking manager, and we would like to thank our
mentors, IT directorate staffs and supervisor for their extreme support and the main
reason we overcome our challenge is that we work together as a team.

NO Challenges Measures taken

1 Distance of organization Wake up early
2 Weather condition Use an umbrella
3 Financial problem From families and DU support

2.8 : Over all benefits I gained from the internship

The main aim of this internship program is changing the theoretical education we have
learned to the practical one. The main objective of this practical attachment is to make the
graduating students to have sufficient practical experience that enables them to perform
effectively on their appropriate profession after graduation. The practical attachment is
very interesting and helpful for the student. It helps the students to observe the work
environment and gain experience for their future career. It will also help the students to
solve the real world problems by applying all their knowledge they gained in their
learning time. However it is, from this internship program we have got different skills.

Skills we have got and improved in our internship program are list below:-

 Practical skills.
 Theoretical Knowledge.
 Interpersonal Communication skills.
 Team playing skills.
 Leadership skills.
 About Work ethics related issue.
 Entrepreneurship skills.

The major benefits that we get for the internship are classified and stated as below.

2.9 In terms of improving practical skills

These programs enable me to correlate the theoretical knowledge with practical skills.
Work experience offers a really good opportunity to put into practice what you have
learned in a real life work environment. As computer engineer the organization gives an

opportunity to contribute in improvement the computer networking technological
potential.

Some of the practical skills we developed when we were in the organization can be listed
below.

 Network configuration and installation, maintenance, System test, Database

management and other related.

2.10 In terms of upgrading theoretical knowledge

Even if we have some vision in various courses learn in the class, briefly we know more
while we saw really. We recall and relate the theoretical knowledge with practical. While
you do something you force to refer about the subject this make you to remember and
upgrade yourself.

Some of theoretical knowledge I have gained during internship period are listed below.

 Learn about how to design network and manage database.

 Apply class room theoretical part to real work situations.
 Learn about how to design and develop website.
 Learn about how to test and fix system problem.
 Learn about how to install and configure network.

2.11 In terms of improving interpersonal communication skills

In the company, I was working with all the staff members and any individual peacefully,
by the experience I have gained from my internship program. In the internship period
interpersonal communication skill is the best thing because one way of learning, mutual
exchange of ideas, information and skill. Furthermore I can establish mutual respect
within the company, I were engaged during my internship period at MoWSAIT team

work. I tried to develop my interpersonal communication skill by different forms such as
speaking, writing and listening.

It has the following advantages;

 To handle information.
 Making productivity more fruitful.
 To become easier to work with.
 To persuade people.
 To improve relationship with others all the staff members peacefully and
consideration for one another’s opinions and input.
 To understand workers attitude.

 To know the work characteristics in the organizations.

2.12 In terms of improving team playing skills

A team player is a person who plays or works well as a member of a team or group.
Teams in an organization need strong team players to perform well to reach their goals.
Team work is also needed to share different experience alongside the work. During the
internship period we were doing some work task in group. When we were doing the
entire project we had a role and even if tasks are done individually by the respective
person at different section of the project, there are times at which different individuals
come together to communicate with each other in order to reach for the desired goals.
And at times where everything becomes very complex team work plays an important role
in solving the difficulties. The most important point in team playing skill is just reaching
an agreement from different on the work to be done. As mentioned above we divided in
teams during the internship time and we have been working as a team in order to solve
some problems and it helps us a lot in solving the problem easily and quickly. During our
internship time we have massively improved our team work spirit. As we all in our
campus life sometimes we study in group and sometimes individually. But during
internship time there is no individual thing even if you are performing your own task

because finally it is going to be integrated as one project to do so you need to work as a
team unless your work may be valueless.

2.13 In terms of improving leadership skills

Leadership is the ability of an individual or a group of individuals to influence and guide

followers or other members of an organization. So Leadership skill is very important to
achieve a goal and I tried to relate Leadership skill with in my day to day activities during
internship period like making sound and sometimes difficult decisions, creating and
articulating a clear vision, establishing achievable goals and providing followers with the
knowledge and tools necessary to achieve those goals. In other side Leaders are found
and required in most aspects of society, from business to politics to region to community-
based organizations.

So, as mentioned above a leadership skill helps me in many ways especially during
internship period. Some of benefits I have gained in terms of improving leadership skills
are listed below.

 self-confidence and openness to change

 willingness to take risks and reactiveness in times of crisis
 strong communication and management skills
 creative and innovative thinking
 perseverance in the face of failure

2.14 In terms of understanding about work ethics related issues

In today’s complex world, Ethical conduct of workers is very important for developing
healthy working environment and increasing productivity. The work ethic is a cultural
norm that advocates being personally accountable and responsible for the work that one
does and is based on a belief that work has intrinsic value. The term is often applied to
characteristics of people, both at work and at play.

Work ethics include not only how one feels about their job, career or vocation, but also
how one does his/her job or responsibilities. These involve attitude, behavior, respect,
communication, interaction, and how one gets along with others. Work ethics
demonstrate many things about whom and how a person is. Thus employer expects
employees to develop certain desirable traits that will help them to perform their jobs
well so that the company can succeed. Ethical work conduct enables me in order to
posses’ appropriate behaviors in the work and so i develop proper relationships with co-
workers and it helps me to create good working environment. There are two common
types of ethics.

These are Personal ethics and Professional ethics.

Personal ethics

Personal ethics are values which are expected to be possessed by all individuals in their
life, and contribute a lot for a smooth interaction among individuals and peaceful co-
existence of a society. What I gained in the company principles of personal ethics
include:

 Concern for the well-being of other

 Honesty, Integrity, Fairness, and Responsibility
 Possessing a Positive Attitude, and Compliant to the law

Professional ethics

Professional ethics refers to the standards or a set of moral principles for regulating
behaviors of a certain defined profession.

The following are some of the common professional ethical principles that I have gained
in the internship period.

Department of computer science | APPENDICES

Internship report

Prepared By Surafel Teshome

 Punctuality- means keeping the companies work beginning and ending time and
to complete a given task within the given period.
 Reliability- The worker should be qualified for the part he is supposed to be
performing. He/she must have appropriate skill and knowledge for the task
assigned.
 Honesty- Regarding this value each worker regardless of its status should abstain
from bad behaviors such as cheating, bias, corruption etc.
 Cooperation- Each worker should interact and cooperate with each other while
working. That is because it is through such system problems could be easily
solved.
 Respect the rule and regulation of the organization.

In general, I have tried to understand both types of ethics I mentioned above.

Internship program allows me to gain a better perspective of post-graduation employment
by applying the principles and theories I have developed in the classroom. This practical
application creates an easier transition for me from the classroom to the working world.
While practicing on job training I realize that creativity and problem solving is one of the
starting points of entrepreneurs. This internship motivates me not to be employee because

chapter 4 : CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

4.1 Conclusion
The practical attachment that we have done for 45 days is an attractive work and
intelligence activities for professional field of my work career opportunity. This practical
attachment gives me the experience, skill and knowledge on my job application for the
work activities performed professionally. Because practical attachment means changing
theory to practical work, therefore, this attachment helps to find the job opportunity
practiced in different organization to change better information accessibility in the public
services.

IT center of MoWSA organization established for the purpose of guide how to

communicate among each sector of work. During stay in internships we have observed so
many professional activities and learn as well. This internship was very fruitful to us
because we had to know what we apply during installation. We also learn new concepts
and new ways of working. During this internship period we acquired practical experience
to complement the theoretical content of our study in the class, network cable installation,
network cable punching and installation using network materials. To conclude, we think
that this internship was very beneficial to us as we learnt a lot, and it made our discover
work's in a real world.

In generally, this practical attachment develops the ability, knowledge, experience and
skill of us to recognize relevant information to the society.

4.2 Recommendations about Organization

Working at MoWSAIT was a great experience for us. We had learnt many things
throughout internship period. From our little knowledge what we have some
recommendations as follows:

The organization must prepare suitable room for customers. The workers should have to
improve their punctuality. The co-ordination between the high levels to the low level

should be good to use latest software and devices and to have more educated and
experienced man power.

MoWSA of IT directorate have a very few employee in network installation whereas the
work pressure is high. So the department should increase their workforce and share the
work together. Secondly, to increase the rate of work efficiency they need faster
communication using internet computer with user. The IT directorate should update or
add more network features and appoint a professional operator so that it might save time,
money, labor and execute an impact for the long run.

4.3 Recommendations about internship

We would like to recommend practical attachment is good way basic acquired
knowledge; however durations of the practical is very short in the internships. Because of
many course require practices that we had learnt from 1st to 3rd year to cover the theory
one into practical. Such as application, maintenance, operating system. So the department
increases duration of internship period to cover all things, and also assign advisors for the
student for motivations. The university should have to pay payment for all students
equally being on a time.

APPENDICES
As I mentioned above some about what I do during internship period, it helps the reader
to understand brief and detail explanation that related to Information Technology (IT) in
the ministry of women and social affairs (MoWSA) organization.

So, I motivated, and inspire to write some about the problems or challenges faced in
organizations, industries, teaching and learning (example in universities, colleges,
schools, and other institutes) with in their possible and appropriate solutions.

Some of them are listed below.

IT challenges facing or problems in organizations: The main problems are high cost
of getting, installing, operating, maintaining, and replacing IT systems, use of unlicenced
software ,outdated hardware and software systems, lack of technical support for
maintenance of systems and also other challenges like ever increasing demands for
transformation, customer experience, growing Sybersecurity and data privacy threats,
advancing data opportunities, geopolitical impacts, workload, skills gaps, budget are
main challenges of IT in industries and companies.

Problems or challenges in integrating IT in teaching and learning: The major barriers

were lack of genuine software, inadequate computer in the classroom, low speed internet,
lack of motivation from both teacher and student side to use IT, lack of proper training
skills, unavailability of latest IT equipment, lack of expert technical staff, poor
administrative support and poor courses.

To overcome from challenges or problems those I explained in the above, we take

different method and procedure with in appropriate skills and knowledge as follows.

 Understand and identify the key components of IT capability.

 Make holistic judgments against broad criteria when assessing IT capability.
 Promote learning progression in the development of concepts, knowledge, skills
and confidence applied to tasks depends on the range and type of problems
tackled.

 Reinforce a positive outlook, ask question to understand the problem, be open-
minded, look down on a problem, define the problem completely, think logically,
and each other related.

In generally IT has contributed a lot to change our everyday life. It plays a vital role in
today’s personal, commercial, social networking, education, home and domestic
activities, health, banking, employment and many others.
