Introduction
Riding and driving in Thailand is an experience that can be
both exciting and challenging at the same time. Although
traffic rules in theory apply internationally, the local road
conditions and driving culture will certainly differ from what
you are accustomed to in your home country.
It is very important to familiarise yourself with the local traffic
laws, signage, and - most importantly - driving customs.
Thailand drives on the left, and road signs are usually in both
Thai and English. Traffic can be extremely congested and slow-
moving in urban areas, and motorbikes are a common sight on
the roads.
Defensive driving and patience are the key to navigating
through traffic and arriving safely at your destination.
We assume you can already drive a car or ride a motorcycle,
and likely already have a driving licence from your home
country. This book is intended solely to give guidance on the
particular traffic rules in Thailand and to help you prepare for
the Thai driving test. Therefore, this book does not include
every detail that you will find in the Department of Land
Transport's excellent handbooks for car drivers and
motorcyclists.

Driving risk factors

There are many risks we all have to accept when we are driving
any vehicle, anywhere in the world. In some countries these
risks are higher. The following is a list of risk factors, all of
which you will witness while driving in Thailand, but all of
which you can take steps to avoid.
Speeding
Any increase in speed is directly related to both the likelihood
of a crash happening and the severity of the consequences of
the crash.
II
rt

I
Studies show that every 1%o increase in speed gives a 4%
I
increase in the risk of a fatal crash risk and a 3%o increase in the ,1
j
risk of a serious crash. I
l
The death risk for pedestrians hit by cars rises rapidly with ?

increased speed. For example, you are 5 times more likely to

die if a car hits you travelling at 65 km/hr rather than 50 km/hr.
In car-to-car side crashes the fatality risk for passengers is 85%
at 65 km/h. That's 85% at just 65 km/hr.
Drink-driving and drug-driving
Driving under the influence of alcohol or any psychoactive I

drug increases the risk of a crash causing death or serious I

injury. ,l
I
In the case of drink-driving, the risk of a crash starts at low \rl
levels of blood alcohol concentration and increases I
I
significantly when the driver's level is above 0.04 g/dl. t
I

In the case of drug-driving, the risk of a crash increases to 1

i
differing degrees depending on the drug taken. The risk of a i
fatal crash occurring among those who have used {
amphetamines is about 5 times the risk of someone who has +
i

I
I
not. I

Unsafe vehicles
Many vehicles on the road in Thailand are poorly maintained
and rarely serviced, particularly larger commercial vehicles
such as buses, coaches and lorries. A lot of companies have a
'fix-it-when-it-breaks' approach to vehicle maintenance, rather
rj\
than preventative servicing and replacement of worn parts. I
Brake failure on heavy vehicles is a common cause of t

catastrophic accidents in Thailand. {

i

Not using safety devices $

The use of crash helmets can lead to a large reduction in fatal

injuries and head injuries.

-2-
!!
Wearing a seat-belt reduces the risk of death among drivers
and front seat passengers by half, and among rear seat
passengers by a quarter.
The use of properly fitted child seats can halve the number of
child deaths in accidents.

Poor road infrastructure

The design of roads has a considerable impact on road safety.
Ideally, roads should be designed for the safety of all road
users. This means making sure there are facilities for
pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, as well as cars and
larger vehicles. Measures such as footpaths, cycle lanes, safe
crossing points, and other traffic calming measures are critical
in reducing the risk of injury among vulnerable road users.
Pedestrians are almost an afterthought when it comes to road
planning in Thailand. Crossings are poorly marked, poorly
signed and often in dangerous positions. Most drivers will not
stop for pedestrians on a crossing.
Thailand has almost no cycle lanes and is one of the most
dangerous countries in the world for cyclists, even experienced
ones.
With no dedicated motorrycle lanes, motorcyclists in Thailand
have to take their chances mixing with the larger, faster
vehicles on the road, always coming off worst when an
accident occurs.

Distractions
There are many distractions that can lead to risks while driving,
but the distraction caused by mobile phones has to be top of
the list. Drivers using phones are 4 times more likely to be
involved in a crash. Using a phone while driving impairs your
reaction time (not only braking reaction time, but also your
reaction to traffic signals), and makes it difficult to stay in the
correct lane, and to keep the correct following distance from
the vehicle ahead.
-3-
Hands-free phones are not much safer than hand-held phone
sets, and texting/messaging while driving considerably
increases the risk of a crash.

Traffic law enforcement

If traffic laws on safe driving, drink-driving, seatbelt wearing,
speed limits, crash helmets, and child seats are not enforced
by the police, then they cannot bring about the expected
reduction in road traffic fatalities and injuries.
If traffic laws are not enforced or are perceived as not being
enforced, it is likely they will not be complied with and
therefore will have very little chance of influencing driver
behaviour. 1

l
The Royal Thai Police do not have the resources to maintain
fleets of traffic enforcement vehicles, stopping offenders while i
i
on the road, so they have to resort to using roadblocks and
)
checking traffic as it passes through. Of course; this does not )
\
provide the same level of protection for other road users as the I

presence of roving officers would.

Dangers to look out for
We do not wish to denigrate only Thai drivers for all the
mistakes made on the nation's roads, as many foreigners who
live in Thailand also have some bad driving habits. However,
there are a number of things you should be extremely cautious
of when driving in Thailand.
. Drivers changing lane without warning or without
indicating their intention.
. Drivers straddling more than one lane.
. Drivers cutting corners instead of following'their lane.
. Drivers approaching on the wrong side of the road in fast
curves/bends.
. Motorcyclists driving toward you on the left side of the
road - even at night.
. Drivers cutting in front of you from the left or right.
. Drivers not knowing how roundabouts work.
. Drivers slowing and remaining in the outside lane, but
intending to turn left ahead.
,..,
. Drivers using a left-turn lane to push in and jump the
queue going straight on.
. And many more that you will discover yourself.

I
I
Buying a vehicle l
Foreigners can buy both new and second-hand vehicles in
Thailand, regardless of what visa type they have in their
passport.

Buying new
Buying a new vehicle from a dealer comes witlr" several
benefits. For example, up to 5 years free servicing, free
insurance for the first year, and perhaps most importantly, no
unforeseen expenses due to problems caused by the previous
owner.
After purchasing a new vehicle, your dealer will arrange
registration at the Department of Land Transport (DLT). As a
foreign vehicle owner you will need to provide signed copies of
your passport information page and current visa, work permit .1.
l

(if applicable) and a certificate of residence. 1

The residence certificate is issued by the Immigration

Department. You will need the following to apply for this at
your local immigration office:
. Original passport and a signed copy of the information \
i

page and current visa stamp

:
o I (maybe 2) passport-size photos
. Completed application form I
. TM30 from your landlord, hotel, guesthouse etc. (the
I
I
TM30 itself is NOT a residence certificate) I
{
. TM6 entry form (if applicable)
t
t
.i
It can take some days to complete a purchase and may need
1

1
I
two or three visits to the dealer to complete the paperwork. a

When you eventually collect your new vehicle, the registration

plates will be red, which is only temporary until the DLT and .t
,JT

dealer have completed the registration process. You will have

to pay a deposit for the red plates, but this will be returned I
1

when the new plates are fitted. {

:{

-6- i
After registration, the dealer will call you to come to change
the red plates to new plates registered to your vehicle and
name. You will also receive the vehicle registration 'blue book'
for 4-wheel vehicles or the 'green book' for motorcycles.
DLT will also provide a sticker to show you have paid the
annual car tax. This sticker should be fixed on the vehicle
windscreen or in a suitable place on your motorcycle.

Buying secondhand
Buying secondhand can save you a lot of money compared to
buying nery but there are a few things you should check
before buying used. For instance, has the car been regularly
serviced? Has the car been in an accident? Does it have unpaid
finance? Using a trustworthy dealer with a good reputation will
make the buying experience and ownership less stressful.
When purchasing secondhand, you will have to transfer
ownership at the Department of Land Transport (DLT). You will
need to provide the same documents as listed previously for
new vehicles.
The seller or registered owner of the car must bring their
original documents with signed copies of their ID or passport,
house registration document, and the vehicle registration 'blue
book' or 'green book'. If the seller brings only a copy of the
vehicle registration, you should ask for proof that all
outstanding finance has been paid for the vehicle.

Road tax
You will have to pay road tax as part of the vehicle registration
process for a new vehicle. Secondhand vehicles should have
existing road tax. The amount of tax depends on the make and
model of your car and can be between 800 Baht and 10,000
baht peryear. If you are buying a a new car, your dealerwill be
able to tell you exactly how much tax you will have to pay.

-7
'1
I

t
I
You will be responsible for renewing your vehicle's road tax
each year. If you allow your vehicle's road tax to lapse, you will
have to pay a fine of 10/o per month to DLT when you come to {I
renew it.
The police can fine you up to 2,000 Baht for not having road
I
tax. ,t

If your vehicle is left untaxed for a period of 3 yea"rs, your I

registration number is automatically suspended. ii

Vehicle inspection
Secondhand vehicles over a certain age require a technical
inspection before road tax can be purchased. The inspection
can be done at any dealer or service centre that displays the
dtor ror or'(ot:a) sign. Look for the yellow gear symbol on a
blue circle background. You must take the vehicle's registration
book with you.
t

. Cars, SUV vans and pickup trucks 7 years and older

require an inspection. \
. Motorrycles 5 years and older require an inspection.
l

If your vehicle is younger than this, but you have allowed the
road tax to expire, you will also need to have the vehicle
inspected before you can renewthe road tax.

-8
What will be inspected?
The inspector will check the following:
" That the vehicle information, such as registration plate,
colour, chassis number, engine number, fuel type, all
agree with the registration document
. The condition of the frame or body, safety equipment,
electrical equiprnent, handlebars, steBring wheel,
windscreen wiper:;, etc.
. Condition of tyres, engine, suspension, braking system,
exhaust system, fuel system
. Test braking efficiency
. Check the heaolight direction and intensity, turn
indicators and other lights
. Check the carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon gases of
personal cars not exceeding 7 seats
. Diesel engined vehicles will be checked for black smoke
emission using filter paper
. Sound measurement must not exceed 100 decibels
If your vehicle passes the inspection you will be issued with a
certificate which can be used to renew your road tax. The
certificate is valid for 3 months from date of issue.
If your vehicle fails the inspection, you will be issued a failure
r.l
notice listing the failed items. Once you have it repaired, you
can take it back to the same inspection centre and pay half of
the originalfee for a re-'nspection.
Private test centres cannot inspect certain types of vehicles, for
example:
. N/odified vehicles (lowered suspension, lifted suspension,
tuned engine, etc.)
. Cars whose body r:olour does not agreb with the vehicle
registration book

-9-
. Cars that do not display vehicle numbers or engine
numbers (may have been scratched, altered, or damaged
to the point where accuracy cannot be verified)
. Older carls with outdated registration plates such as nu-
00001, nu?I-0001 (these registrations must be exchanged
for new versions at DLT)
. Vehicles that have been lost or stolen and recovered
. Cars that have been out of registration for more than 1

year

Temporary'red plates'
Many people are unaware that there are requirements and
restrictions on the use of vehicles with red plates.
First, it is important to always keep your ownership
documents, the temporary red book, and vehicle transfer
documents in the vehicle. If the police stop you, you will likely
have to pay a fine if you cannot prove ownership.
Second and oddly, red registration plates restrict you to driving
\
only during daylight hours and in the province that the car is t
registered in. If you want to drive in other provinces or at 1

night, then you need to write down the destination and date of l
I
the trip in the temporary red book. You are also not supposed 1

to drive on expressways, but this does not seem to be 1

enforced. In reality, though, these rules are universally ll
1

ignored. a
I
.l
Vanity plates I
I
If you want to choose a specific plate number for your new I
vehicle, you (or a Thai friend) can do it online on the
i
Department of Land Transport website. You will need to know II
the chassis number of your vehicle, which you can get from J
t
your dealer. i
The Department of Land Transport website shows a list of 1

available registration numbers sorted by alphabet letter and I

i
number. The site is updated daily, so if it doesn't have the
alphabet letter or number that you want on that day, you just
need to wait until it's available on a different day.
It's possible to wait until the number you want becomes
available. During this time, you can continue using the vehicle
with the red plates. It is not entirely legal, but you are unlikely
to have a problem.
Once you have successfully booked your cherished number,
you can print out a confirmation document and hand it over
with your other documents to your dealer to complete the car
registration.
If you are buying a new car, it is worth asking your dealer if
they can book you your preferred number. Whilst you will not
be the owner of the number (and not be able to move it to
another vehicle), it is usually easier and cheaper than buying
one yourself.
If you do not buy or reserve a specific number, your vehicle
registration will be assigned randomly.

Selling your vehicle

Selling your vehicle is exactly as explained above for
purchasing. If you are part-exchanging against another
vehicle, you may want to sell to a dealer, but if you're leaving
Thailand you might find a better deal by selling privately to
another person.
The quickest way to sell is to go to one of the many roadside
secondhand dealers ('tent' in Thai) and ask them to give you a
price. It will certainly be lower than what you could achieve
selling privately, but you will be paid immediately in cash and
they will take care of all the paperwork. All you have to do is
hand over the keys.

Number plates
You will see many different colours of number plate
background and text in Thailand. Here is a quick guide to what
each one is used for.

Temporary plates
For cars, pickups and vans, the
plate is black text on a red

sale or repair'.
For motorcycles the red plate is 1 white number followed by a
dash and 4 more numbers on a red background, with text
underneath to show the province.

Other plates
The Department of Land Transport is responsible for issuing all
the registration plates listed above, but does not have the
authority to issue plates for police vehicles, military vehicles or
vehicles of the royal household.
Non-combat military vehicle plates have up to 5 white Thai
numbers on a black background, preceded with the insignia of
the service (army - circular shield motif, air force - wings, navy -
anchor, combined forces - all three insignia combined). Red
text on a white background indicates a combat vehicle.
Royal household plates are white letters on a black background
and show the Thai letters 5.s.4. followed by 1 to 3 numbers.
Police plates have up to 5 white Thai numbers on a purple
background, preceded with the police insignia of sword and
shield. The same plates are used on police motorcycles.

Unusual plates
Vehicle registration plates are issued by the Department of
Land Transport office in each of Thailand's 77 provinces, with
one exception. The district of Betong (ruol.:) in the southern
province of Yala (svar) has its own registrar issuing registration
plates, due to the difficulty of travelling to the provincial
capital.

Vehicle insurance
Insurance types
Compulsory insurance
The minimum compulsory insurance for all vehicle types is
called Por Ror Bor (vlru) and must be renewed annually. A
receipt is provided to enable you to renew your road tax. This is
an inexpensive level of cover which makes the vehicle legal to
drive on the road and provides some protection to both the
driver, passengers and third parties.
As of 2023, the protection offered is up to 30,000 Baht for
medical expenses and 35,000 Baht for death or loss of a limb
or organ. Higher damages can be paid out if it can be proven
that you are the victim. In this case, the limits are up to 80,000
Baht for medical expenses, up to 500,000 Baht for death or
permanent disability, up to 500,000 Baht for the loss of a limb
or organ, and finally, daily compensation of 200 Baht per day
for up to 20 days if you are hospitalised.
_l

Voluntary insurance tI
I
't
Motorcycles
1
Voluntary motorcycle insurance of various levels is available,
l
but you will find that only owners of large, expensive bikes
i
purchase cover to protect themselves and their vehicles. All the I

l
small scooters you see riding around are mostly uninsured I
\
beyond the compulsory Por Ror Bor (u:u). 1
i

Cars, SUVs, vans, pickup trucks

]
There are a number of levels of voluntary insurance available 1

for these vehicles. They are 1,2,2+,3, and 3+, with 1 being the 1

highest coverage. The following details are generally true of I

I
most insurers, but some may offer extra options, such as free
I
wi ndscreen replacement. l
i

I
-16- i
i
l
Class 1 insurance (comprehensive)
Class insurance provides comprehensive cover for damage to
'1

the insured vehicle regardless of fault in case of accident, fire,

theft, or natural disaster. It also provides cover for liability to
third parties (property damage and injury) when the driver is at
fault. A class 1 insurance policy also covers medical expenses,
personal accident cover, and bail bond cover for the driver and
passengers.
Class 1 insurance is generally not available for vehicles over 10
years old, even for expensive luxury vehicles. The insurance
company will consider the age, mileage and condition of the
vehicle before offering cover.
Who should buy class 1 cover?
Owners of cars less than 5 years old - there is a high risk of
needing more expensive car repairs when the vehicle is
damaged or stolen compared to older vehicles.
New drivers with little driving experience - no matter which
cars they drive, there is a higher risk of car accidents with new
drivers.
Regular drivers - the risk for a vehicle is not just on the driver
or the car itself. It also depends on the usage of the car over
time. If the car is used regularly for long-distance driving or
everyday commuting, then the risk factor increases.

Class 2+ insurance (third party, fire, theft and collision)

Class 2+ insurance provides good cover at a lower price than
class 1, but the cover is slightly different. Class 2+ still covers
damage to the insured vehicle regardless of fault, but usually
requires that another identified vehicle is involved in the
accident. It also covers damage caused by fire, theft or flood,
and liability to third parties (property damage and injury) when
the driver is at fault. Class 2+ also provides cover for medical
expenses, personal accident cover, and bail bond cover for the
driver and passengers. Importantly, class 2+ insurance

or in unsecure locations. For example, cars normally parked at l

Class 3+ insurance (third party and collision) \

It

Class 3+ insurance is the same as class 2+ but does not cover

fire, theft or flood. i

Who should buy class 3+ cover?

Owners. of vehicles 8 years and older. Even though coverage
for your own vehicle's body is less important as it gets older,
the car can still cause property damage and injury to a third
party if there is a collision.
Owners of regularly used vehicles, but with no risk from the
parking location.

l

Class 3 insurance(third party only)

medical expenses, personal accident cover, and bail bond 1

cover for the driver and passengers. i

i

{
j

-18- I

l
Who should buy class 2 and 3 cover?
These last two options both have low cost and low cover. They
provide the lowest insurance premiums for those on a tight
budget, but they also offer the most basic insurance cover.
Having a class 2 or 3 insurance policy is still better than relying
it
on compulsory motor insurance, since will cover any
damages you may cause to a third party.

Insurance excess
You can save money on vehicle insurance by choosing a policy
with an excess. If you make a claim where you are at fault (or
no third-party is involved), then you pay for your vehicle's
repair costs up to the amount of the excess. Your insurance
company will pay for your vehicle's repair costs above the
amount of the excess. If you make a claim where you are not at
fault, the excess will not apply.
Who is insured to drive?
You can save money by speciflTing who will drive your vehicle,
or you can choose a more flexible driver plan that allows more
people to drive the car. Most insurance companies offer
different driver plans to suit your needs.
A named driver plan
This plan will have the lowest premiums. You need to speciflT
everyone who will be driving your car. This plan only covers
accidents occurring when one of the drivers named on the
policy is driving the car. The policy may not pay out if anyone
else is driving the car at the time of an accident.

Any driver older than 30 plan

This plan offers more convenience than the Named Driver plan
at a slightly higher price. Anyone aged 30 or more can drive
your car without needing to be named on the policy. You will
need to specify the main driver, which is the person who will be
driving your car most of the time. This plan will cover accidents

occurring when the main driver or anyone aged 30 or more is

l
driving your car. Coverage will not be provided if anyone aged
under 30 is driving the car at the time of an accident.
Any driver older than 25 plan
l

Similar to the over-3O plan but for over-25s. This will be more \

expensive as the drivers are younger.

Any driver plan

This plan is the most convenient but also the most expensive.
Anyone can drive the vehicle without needing to be named on
the policy. This plan will cover all accidents regardless of who is
driving the car at the time of an accident. The main driver i

usually still needs to be specified on the poliry. I

Car dashcams
Technology can really help in backing up a claim of non-
liability. Dashboard and rear-facing cameras are particularly
good at providing evidence to support your claim. Some
insurance companies require them to be fitted, and some even
provide them as part of the policy,

Accidents
Thailand is home to some of the most chaotic traffic in the
world, and this is not helped by the fact that around two-thirds
of the vehicles on the roads are small motorcycles driving
every which way. It should come as no surprise then to know
that Thailand has the second-highest number of traffic
fatalities in the world. This means there is a very high risk of
you being involved in an accident at some point. Just be
thankful if the only thing damaged is your car and your pride.
It is crucial you know what steps to take after an accident.
Accidents involving only your vehicle
If you are the only vehicle involved and you have not injured
anyone or caused damage to someone's property, then you
only need to noti! your insurance to make a repair claim (if
you have class 1 insurance). You can do this at your
convenience.

Accidents involving other vehicle(s)

Don't panic, stay calm and safe.
Preserve dashcam footage if you have one fitted.
Check to see if anyone is injured and try to move everyone to a
safe location. If there are injured parties, call an ambulance
and the police before doing anything else. If you suspect that

-21 -
someone has hurt their back or neck, don't move them but get
them as comfortable as possible until help arrives.
If you can't speak Thai, call a friend who can and ask them to
come to help you if possible.
Irrespective of whether you believe you are at fault or not, you
should take down the registration number, make and colour of
the other vehicle(s) involved. A mobile phone is the easiest way
to do this and to get some photos of the scene of the accident.
Ask the other party for their ID, telephone number and driving
licence, They will likely ask you for the same. If possible take a
photo of their licence and ID.
Get the names and addresses or phone numbers of any
witnesses.
If yourvehicle is blocking the road or is a dangerto other road
users, you should take a few photos of the scene and get
agreement from the other party to move the vehicles to a safer
place.
Call your insurer to send a representative. Most insurers will
have an agent at the scene within half an hour. If the police
arrive and ask you to move the cars without first marking the
road, then take your own photos of the scene to give to your
insurance agent.
Even if you think you may have been at fault, do not say or sign
anything admitting liability. Leave all the talking to your
insurance agent.
If you have any doubt about whose fault it is, then do not move
your vehicle from the scene until a policeman has marked the
position and direction of your vehicle on the road and has
instructed you to do so.
Accidents resulting in injury
If someone is seriously injured, then the priority is to get them
to the nearest hospital. There should be no need to go to the

-22-
hospital if the injury is minor and can wait until everything is
sorted out with the insurers.
If you have suffered injuries yourself, do not forget to keep the
hospital receipts and doctor's certificate as evidence for your
insurer. Remember, you can also claim medical expenses
under your compulsory insurance.
Report the accident to the police and advise your insurer if you
are detained by the police for any reason. Your insurer will
arrange to post bail so that you can leave the police station as
soon as possible. It is important to know that the police have
no right to detain you at the station unless there has been a
serious injury that would result in a lengthy hospital stay.
If you leave the scene of the accident, it is likelyto be regarded
as an admission of guilt, so if you have to leave the scene for
any reason, you should report to the police station as soon as
possible.

If your vehicle is undriveable

Your insurance agent will usually arrange removal of the
vehicle to the nearest garage for repair. If you have to pay,
make sure to keep the receipt and give it to your insurer for
reimbursement.
If your vehicle is held by the police
Police have the power to hold vehicles involved in an accident
for further investigation if they believe one or both parties
have broken the law. If your vehicle is held, you should ask the
police officer to include any items of value in your vehicle into
the report as evidence of your belongings.
If the other vehicle does not stop or leaves the scene
If the other party flees the scene of the accident (as often
happens when drivers are uninsured), you should notify the
police and provide as much information as you can about
them. A dashcam helps enormously in this situation. The police

-23 -
will give you a copy of their report, which you will need to give
to your insurer to make a claim.
Calling your insurer
After any accident, you shoulrj always call your insurer as soon
as possible. Their contact details will be shown on a sticker on
your windscreen. The sticker is usually issued with your
insurance policy" IVlake sure you receive the sticker when your
insurer sends the policy to you.
The insurance company will ask for your car registration
number (and possibly your policy number). AII insurers can
retrieve your records by informing them of just your car
registration number. They wrll also ask you for the location,
how the accident happened, and also your phone number so
that the agent can contact you. Remember to ask the name of
the person taking your call in case the agent takes too long to
arrive and you need to follow up with them, or in the event you
need to go to a hospital or police station.

Driving licences
I

If you stay in Thailand for 3 months or less, then you can

Iegally drive your vehicle under your home country's driving
I licence providing you also have an International Driving Permit
(but check that the vehicle's insurance permits this). Both
documents should be with you at all times when driving, and
shown to a police officer if you are stopped.
Anyone staying in Thailand for more than 3 months and
driving a motorbike or car must apply for a Thai driving
licence.
Be aware that driving without a Thai licence may invalidate
your vehicle insurance. This could be extrernely costly in the
:1
event of an accident.

Driving licence types

The Department of Land Transport issues Thai driving licences.
The first licence you will be issued is a 'temporary licence', valid
for 2 years.
Once you renew the temporary licence, you will be issued with
a S-year licence. This can be renewed every 5 yehrs thereafter.

Driver ages
Different minimum ages apply for licences by vehicle type.
They are as follows:
. 15 years and older for motorcycles up to 1 1Occ
. 18 years and older for motorcycles over 1 1Occ
. 18 years and older for cars, vans, pickups
. 18 years and older for tractors, construction vehicles,
agricultural vehicles, etc.
. 20 years and older for motorrycle taxis
. 22 years and older for three-wheel and four-wheel tuk-
tuks, taxis, and minibuses

-25
Getting a licence
Obtaining a Thai driving licence is quite straightforward. It can
be done in a day (depending on where you apply), costs only a
few hundred baht, and can be used in all 10 ASEAN countries.
Some busy test centres may require you to visit as many as 3
times to complete the application process.
To apply for a licence you have to be in good physical and
mental health.
Before going to your local Department of Land Transport
office, make sure to book an appointment online with the DLT
Smart Queue application. If you cannot book online, go one
day with your documents, get them submitted, then they will
make you an appointment to come back for the tests. Also, you
should go to the DLT early in the morning so you can possibly
fihish everything within one day.
If you don't want to do the process yourself, you can work with
an agenry to get your driving licence. They will take care of
everything for you, including filling out all the paperwork and
helping you prepare for the test.
You can also apply for a licence at any government approved
driving school. In addition to teaching you how to drive if you
I
cannot already, these schools offer a similar test to that of the I
DLT. Once you complete all the tests, the school will give you a
1 )tt
document that you can use to get your driving licence at the t
DLT office. This option may be quicker and more convenient,
but it will be a lot more expensive.
Documents you will need
The required documents often change and may depend on the
officer you submit them to. Therefore, it is best to check with
the DLT before making your appointment.
Generally speaking, the documents you need to apply are as
follows:
. Original passport
-26 -
. Copy of passport information page
. Copy of passport visa page
. Copy of the page that shows the last entry stamp into
Thailand
. Your TM6 entry/departure card (if you have one, as they
are no longer used when entering Thailand by air)
. Either a certificate of residence (see the 'buying a vehicle'
section') or a letter of address certified by your embassy.
Make sure that the letter is dated within the preceding 30
days
o fi health/medical certificate dated within the preceding
30 days
You can get a medical certificate at any clinic or hospital. Just
let them know what you need it for. They will ask to see your
passport, ask a few questions, do a quick check-up, then issue
the medical certificate. The cost of a certificate will vary
depending on where you are in the country and where you
apply for it. Small clinics typically charge anything from 200
Baht, while hospitals may charge 500 Baht or more.
In addition to the documents listed above, it is a good idea to
bring a valid international driver's licence with a signed copy (if
you have one) or a regular driver's licence from your home
country with a signed copy. If you have these with you, you will
not have to do the theory and practical exams - you will be
issued a Thai licence with the same vehicle categories as your
existing licence.

The driving test

Once you have submitted your documents and they have been
accepted by the officer, you will have to watch a video and take
a number of tests.

-27 -
The physical tests
Reflexes - You will sit behind simulated accelerator and brake
pedals. You push the accelerator pedal untilthe green lights on
the panel light up, then press the brake pedal before the lights
reach the red zone.
Colour blindness - An official will show you different coloured
dots on a poster, and you have to tell them the name of each
colour you see. The colours are the red, amber and green of
the traffic lights. Be sure to call it yellow, not orange or amber.
Depth perception - You must align a moving bar using
forward and back buttons.
Peripheral vision - You put your head on a test station and
look directly ahead toward an official. Then you have to tell
them the colour shown on your right and left side without
moving your eyes.
If you fail any of the tests, you will have to watch the video
once more before you can take the test again. I

Once you've successfully completed allthe tests, the officer will L

give you an appointment card to come back for the theory test.
If you are lucky, you will be able to do it the same day.
The theory test
The theory test, as its name implies, concerns the rules of the
road.
1

First you will have to watch 5 hours of videos that cover all
aspects of driving. The videos are in Thai with English subtitles.
You should bring your appointment card and passport with
you.
The first video will begin around 9 am and they will continue
until around 2.30 pm after a break. The first video is 2 hours
and covers safe driving. The second video is 1.5 hours and
covers vehicle law, highway law and traffic law. The third video
t
is hour covering awareness and road etiquette. The final
video is 30 minutes explaining what to do in the event of an
_28 _
accident. You will also be given a book of road signs to study.
You must know these, as they will show up in the test. The
videos are not a great help in preparing you for the theory test,
so be sure to study the questions in this book beforehand.
You have 60 minutes to answer 45 multiple-choice questions
correctly out of 2 sets of 25, a total of 50 questions. The 50
questions are randomly pulled from a pool of hundreds of
questions. Some are very similat but worded differently, so
you should be very careful when answering. Also, some of the
English translations are not easy to understand and some
questions appear to have more than one correct answer.
The test covers several categories:
. Vehicle law
. Traffic law
. Road markings
. Prohibitory & mandatory signs
. Warning signs
. Information signs
. Driving etiquette
. Safe driving
. Vehicle maintenance
If you fail the test, you can come back the following day to
retake it. If you pass, you will be receive an appointment card
to attend for your practical test.
The practical test - cars
You do the the practical test alone in your vehicle, watched
from a distance by an officer. There are no complicated
manoeuvres.
Pay close attention to what is required of you at each of the 3
positions.
Position 1 You must drive straight forward between a lane of
two rows of parallel poles until the rear of your vehicle has
-29 -
passed the last poles, as in the left picture below. You must
then reverse your vehicle back out of the rows of poles until
the front of your vehicle passes the first poles, as in the picture
on the right.
The poles are 2.5 metres apart and the lane is between 10 and
20 metres long. Your wheels must go over the start and end
lines, but you must not hit the poles. You can go forwards and
backwards only once.

The left side of your vehicle must be parallel to and within 25
centimetres of the kerb. The front of your vehicle must not
exceed 1 metre from the stop line. You must not drive onto the
footpath or the kerb.

-31 -
Position 3 You must parallel park your vehicle in a space on
the left using no more than 7 forward/reverse moves, with the
car coming to rest around 50 centimetres from the kerb. You
must then exit the parking slot, using any leftover moves. The
total cannot be more than 7 moves for entry and exit
combined. l

\
The width of the space is equal to the width of your vehicle

If you fail the driving test you can attempt it again after 3
working days. You will only be required to redo the position(s)
you previously failed. You must pass all. 3 positions in the
practical test within a 90 day period, or you will have to repeat
the entire process.
Once you have successfully completed all the tests, your 2-year
temporary licence will be issued.
Motorcycle test
Getting a motorcycle licence is almost identical to getting a
driving licence. You have to provide the same documents and
take the same physical and theory tests as above, but the
riding test is obviously a little bit different to the driving test.
You will be shown a video beforehand of exactly what the test
involves.
The riding test requires you to complete 5 tasks:
. Ride while following traffic signs.
. Ride a narrow path, balancing without letting your feet
touch the floor for about 10 seconds.

-33-
. Ride in a zig-zag in a narrow Z-shaped curve. Do not hit
the cones. \

. Ride in an S-shaped curve. Do not hit the cones. )

. Ride in a zig-zag avoiding obstacles.

I

If you fail the riding test, you may retake it numerous times on
the same day at the examiner's discretion. Otherwise, you will
need to come back the next day to redo it.
Once you have successfully completed all the tests, your 2-year
temporary licence will be issued.

Renewing your licence

You can apply to renew your licence up to 3 months before it
expires, or within one year after it expires.
If it expired more than a year ago, you will have to retake the
theory test.
If it expired more than three years ago, you will have to retake
the theory and practical tests.
The renewal is similar to applying for the licence the first time,
including the required documents. The only difference is that
this time you don't have to do the theory and practical tests.
Renewing a 2-year licence
When you apply to renew your 2-year licence, it will be
renewed for 5 years
Go to your local DIT with your current licence and all the
required documents. Get a queue number from the counter,
then wait your turn to do the colour blindness test, peripheral
vision test, reflex test, and the depth perception test. Having
passed all the tests, you will be issued with your S-year licence.

Renewing a S-year Iicence

When you apply to renew your S-year licence, it will be
renewed for another 5 years.

34-
You first need to create an account on the DLT website, then
watch an online 1-hour video. You will be asked questions
every 10 minutes or so as it progresses. Take a screenshot or
print out the certificate once you've completed this.
Go to your local DLT office with your current licence, the
certificate and all the required documents. Get a queue
number from the counter, then wait your turn to do the colour
