B59TC Test #1 Questions

B59TC –Thermodynamics B
Assignment 1
The following questions will form the basis of an in-class test in week 5. The test
contributes 10 marks to the overall grade for the course. For the assessment, one
question (worth 7 marks) from those below plus an unseen question (worth 3 marks) will
be used.

Q1 In the (novel) steam power plant, shown in the figure below the boiler and superheater
generates steam at pressure 50 bar and temperature 300oC. Eighty two percent (82%) of the
steam is supplied to a high-pressure turbine in which it expands isentropically to 5 bar. The
remainder is throttled to 5 bar and mixed with the exhaust steam from the high-pressure
turbine. All the steam then enters a low-pressure turbine and exhausts at 0.2 bar. The mass
flow rate of steam through the boiler is 23 kg/s. It may be assumed that all work devices are
isentropic.

i) Draw a T-s diagram of the cycle

ii) Calculate the enthalpy at points 2 and 6.
iii) Calculate the total power output of the plant
iv) Calculate the cycle thermal efficiency of the plant

Q2 An ideal multi-bleed steam power cycle operates
with three direct contact regenerators. Steam is
extracted from the turbine at 20 bar, 5 bar and
1 bar and mixed with boiler feed at the
respective pressures. Steam enters the turbine
at 80 bar, 500oC and exhausts the condenser at
0.05 bar.

Find the missing bleed fractions and calculate the

thermal efficiency of the cycle compared to the cycle
without regeneration.

Partial information is available:

Bleed b, 5 bar b = 0.086 2707.6

Q3 A steam power plant operates (Figure Q3) on an

ideal reheat regenerative Rankine cycle and has
a net power output of 80 MW. Steam enters a
high pressure (HP) turbine at 10 MPa and 550oC
and leaves at 0.8 MPa. Some steam is extracted
at this pressure to heat the feed water in a closed feed water heater (heat exchanger). The
extracted steam is leaves the feed water heater as a saturated liquid. The rest of the steam
is reheated to 500oC and is expanded in a low pressure turbine to 10 kPa. Enthalpy values at
each identified point in the cycle are given in Table Q3.

i. Draw a T-s diagram for the cycle.

ii. Determine the mass flow rate of steam through the boiler.
iii. Determine the cycle thermal efficiency.
