TIL 1934
BACKGROUND DISCUSSION
Lectrodryer BAC-50 is a fully automatic, dual tower, continuous operation hydrogen drying system. Each tower uses one
temperature controller switch. The purpose of the dryer is to remove water from a fluid (gas or liquid). Water is
transferred to the hydrogen in the form of water vapor.

Main sources of water vapor are:

 Seal Oil (typically saturated with water and exposed to ambient conditions)
 Water ingress from coolant leaks

Dry hydrogen is used to aid in preventing:

 Condensation
 Insufficient cooling

The temperature controller (switch) is used on standard BAC-50 hydrogen dryers for reactivation heater control.

Having dual absorber beds, the BAC-50 is capable of continuous drying service. While one tower is removing moisture
from the hydrogen in the generator, the other bed is being renewed by reactivation.

The temperature controller has 2 displays:

1) Process Value: Displays measured process temperature in °F or °C
2) Set point Value: Displays programmed set point temperature in °F or °C.

Recently some sites experienced

 Dryer panel temperature indicating switches display in failed status

 Hydrogen Dryer Bed #2, Temperature Indication Switch TIS failed
 Hydrogen dryer electronic boards suffered a failure of the component

 Temperature controller not showing any reading, its display continues blinking
 Heater controller's indicators (SV & PV) were failed for #1 tower bed of hydrogen gas dryer

Figure 3: New and Improved (Watlow) temperature controller (switch)

After a detailed investigation it was identified that the temperature controller (switch) may fail as a result of a faulty
internal capacitor. Failure of this temperature controller (switch) is typically indicated by a blank display while voltage is
applied.

In the event this temperature controller (switch) fails, the affected heater will not energize and the Lectrodryer may
display a heater failure alarm.

RECOMMENDATIONS
To initiate the replacement process of these temperature controllers (switches), please contact your GE representative
immediately for assistance.

There are no potential safety concerns identified in relation to this concern and the Lectrodryer unit will be restored to
full operation after replacement of the aforementioned temperature controller (switch).

Note:
1) Some Watlow temperature controller (switches) shows LIMIT on front panel (Figure 3).
2) Purging of the dryer with CO2 prior to implementing this TIL is not required

This TIL will be 100% complete once both the temperature controllers (switches) are replaced with the Watlow
configuration switches.
